It's RTT, but Original War for PC (and I said it because most people don't mind getting an RTT when they say RTS).

Might and magic: Dark Messiah is a great RPG, you cant skip that game. Its like oblivion with a realy good combat system(oblivions combat system is great too), a great story, alot of blood and gore, and, nudity! What more can you want?

A great Pc RTS would be Warcraft 3 : the frozen throne. Great game. One of the best.

You can find DoW II and Empire: Total War for cheap on gogamer.com and company of heroes gold is 20-30 dollars on steam.

I think World in Conflicts expansion just came out too.

Starcraft, of course. Age of Empires, and I personally enjoyed Black and White I&II quite a bit.

As for RPGs, I don't have an EcksBawks but Fallout 3 and Oblivion seemed nice. Although Morrorwind was better than Oblivion.

Mass Effect or Fallout 3 for an RPG. Dawn of War II, C&C Red Alert 3, or Empire: Total War for an RTS. Oh, and I know you're looking for an RTS on the PC, but you should really download the Halo Wars demo off of the Xbox Live Marketplace. It's a fantastic game, at least in my opinion.

i've heard many recommendations for Dawn of War 2, and i was wondering if anyone knows if it works for Windows XP 64? the requirements mention it doesn't work for 95, 98, 2000 and NT but there was no mention of x64.

Rpg: Dark Messiah elements. The rpg elements are fairly poor but the game is over-all quite enjoyable (the stealth works extremely well). Plus it's cheap.
Rts: Dawn of War or Warcraft 3. Both are very good, although I preferred DoW for the squad based fighting which was nice and different.

Do not listen to all this Fallout 3 is better than life nonesense. Fallout 2 would smash the 3rd ones face in.

Therefore I can redeem you from your request for a console recommendation by again proving that PC is better than life.

RPG: Fallout / Fallout 2 / Fallout Tactics (on reflection that was pretty meh...)
RTS: Command and Conquer / Command and Conquer Tiberium Sun etc etc etc (I.E The old ones, because anything past C&C Generals disgusts me)
Dawn of War: Dark Crusade... Soulstorm was pathetic.
Dawn of War II - A lot of people find it annoying to play, because as apposed to the normal RTS "Build 500000 mammoth tanks to win" it's heavily focussed on limited units in the field (multiplayer is still unbalanced to balls aswell, with Marines and Nids still dominating, 4 major patches in)
Warcraft 3 - Nuff said

Now... this I refuse to call and RTS, because it isn't as such... But it's RPG'y / RTS'y so it's hard to define, but I'd look into it:

Demigod.

That is truly better than life if you can actually find people to play it online with. As a single player game it's completely meh, but the multiplayer battles can last a fewking long time.
It had a big problem with piracy, it's makers commented that about 80% (I think it was 80%, google it to find out) of its playerbase was pirates. (Dirty dirty pirates) But there's more people with retail copies now so you may be able to find some decent games.

Don't stoop the console level! They'll make you pay for download content! (When the hell did patches become DLC's by the way? I put it down to microsoft being greedy little bummers.)

With the RTS side, if your computer is a little old like mine (nearly 6 year old Pentium 4) I would suggest Company of Hero's hands down. I have played DOW II and I find COP to be much better. Other then that, any of the total wars from shogun to Medieval 2 I can vouch for.

On the RPG side, I can highly recommend Oblivion, though it is much better on PC, I immensely enjoy Fable 2, though Fallout 3 takes the cake for console RPG as far as I am concerned.

Though, then again, you could wait a few months and get Dragon Age: Origins when it comes out, it looks very promising.

X360: Tales of Vesperia is being held pretty high. JRPG BUT without much painful stuff + real time fighting which seems to go rather well with likable characters. Check the reviews on it if ya want.

PC: I still consider Universe at War as a pretty solid title. By now a bit old and might be a bit harder to find but I would say that you have till Starcraft 2 little choice where the factions play so wonderfully differently and it plays quite a little bit differently in total. check it's reviews, too.
