I really enjoyed 999: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors. I guess you could also say Sakura Wars: So Long My Love was a visual novel despite the srpg battles. Most of the game was dialogue with choices. I really enjoyed that one too.

Can you recommend more games like this?

Definitely check out the reviews of these [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.290270-Deskimus-P-Presents-Awesome-Games-With-Stupid-Names-Part-2-Muv-Luv-Alternative] guys [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.223721-TYPE-MOON-Review-anniversary-Fate-Stay-Night] (all their reviews can be found at the bottom of the linked ones); that's some 10 extremely in-depth recommendations right there.

I don't know what genres the one's you mention are, so it's hard to give some specific recommendations. VN's not mentioned in those reviews that are generally agreed upon as being good (for those who appreciate the not always too ordinary and uncontroversial themes they deal with), and which have English translations, would include:

- Ace Attorney series
- Clannad
- Higurashi no Naku Koro ni
- G-senjou no Maou (AO)
- Kara no Shoujo (AO)
- Saya no Uta (AO) [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.263822-Coming-Up-With-Topic-Titles-is-Hard-Saya-No-Uta]
- Sharin no Kuni, Himawari no Shoujou (AO)
- Symphonic Rain
- Swan Song (AO)
- True Remembrance
- Umineko no Naku Koro ni

Those could be worth a look. Although as indicated a fair few are for Adults Only, featuring explicit depictions of brutal violence and sex.
