Recommend an anime: more difficult

Alright, you've all seen a topic posted like this every other day. This one is slighlty different however.

Basically, I'm tired of how immature anime is, and I want to watch a show that'll convince me that anime can be for a smart, adult audience. DO NOT RECOMMEND ME ELFEN LIED. That show is exactly the kind of childish, immaturity I am talking about: a show that pretends to be sober and intelligent, but resorts to cheesecake cat girls, inappropriate panty shots at dramatic moments, and sensationalist gore. Adult content does not equal maturity.

I have already seen The Grave of The Fire Flies and Monster, those two being examples of good, mature anime. If you can find me something along those lines, I'd be grateful.

Err... You could try this: http://www.crunchyroll.com/hourou-musuko-wandering-son#s=/hourou-musuko-wandering-son

It's still being released, though, so you'll have to wait to see the rest.

all great
I have already seen GANTZ, and it isn't the kind of thing I'm looking for. Although I will agree it manages to be more mature than Elfen Lied (even whilst having a vagina licking dog), it still far too gratuitous to be considered anything other than childish entertainment.

Higurashi no naku koro ni.

I ALWAYS recommend this anime. One of my favorites. Just what you are looking for.
If you want, they also have full episodes in dubs on youtube. English name is When They Cry.

The Escapist even reviewed it.

I second the Paranoia Agent recommendation. Frankly, anything made by Satoshi Kon is very mature. It's all very psychological, especially Paranoia Agent and Perfect Blue.

I recommend Elfen Lied.

(Serious Post)

Probably already seen it, but you might want to try Haruhi Suzumiya. Episodes are in anachronological order, so you'll probably have to google the actual chronological order of the episodes to avoid being EXTREMELY CONFUSED THE WHOLE WAY THROUGH.

Honest opinion though (On Elfen Lied)? It's not the content that makes it a good anime. It's the story and that fact that it's fairly interesting. The manga ending is much better, has at least 30 more chapters, not as condensed as the anime is, and it's just overall a lot better. Not very tame compared to the anime though, there's even a rape scene. >_>

I didn't think much to Perfect Blue when I first saw it, but I might give this show a go. I know he likes the psychological thriller stuff, so I'll give it a chance.

I would say Cowboy Bebop and Baccano... That's about all I can think of.
Again, I wouldn't exactly call them mature. I've already seen them both and loved them, but I see them as silly fun and not the sort of thing I am after at the moment.

Clannad is great, but there's quite a lot of generic slice of life silliness.

FLCL is quite a mature growing-up story, I would say; but still very silly.

Welcome to the NHK. A very interesting story, but once again a lot of silliness.

Rin daughters of Mnemosyne has an intersting story, but I don't know if you'd think it handles its adult content maturely or not.

I'll second Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni.

The first episode or two make it seem like it will be kind of silly.

Trust me when I say keep watching.

A general trick to working out if a show is even aimed at adults: look at the age of the protagonist. If he is a 13-17 year old boy, that is the demographic the show will be aiming at.
Not many animes even have an adults protagonist, and many of the ones that do will still have him acting like a teenager.

This is why I brought up Monster. It's protagonist is an adult doctor, and the show isn't afraid to deviate and follow the lives of middle-aged and elderly folk.

I already did. I specifically mentioned seeing it in the OP. That is the kind of show I am looking for.
