God, Trigun brings back so many memories.
Wolfwood FTW.
I remember staying up late on Saturday nights to watch it and then falling asleep in church the next day.

I want something as smart as Death Note
Code Geass. It's about a strategic genius that wants to rid the world of it's biggest super power.

Ok, a few I can heartily recommend:
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai, FullMetal Alchemist, and Umineko no Naku Koro ni. Oh, and the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya.
Well, those are just a few. I could recommend more later if needed.
If you're looking for something smart, I would have to agree with the naku koro ni series, though I haven't seen FMA... Those series really are my top anime as well, despite them being quite thoughtful the first time you watch them.

I'd probably also recommend Code Geass (like lots of people on here have already done) and maybe Ergo proxy.
As all of these are pretty heavy, I'd also recommend Sayonara Zetsubo Sensei as a comedy anime. It's not very well known, and it's very japanese, but I would say it's one of the more "intelligent" of the funny anime.

But that had an even more unsatisfying ending than Death Note!

But, yeah, Code Geass.
Until you get till the end it's awesome
To be honest, stop when you've finished the first season. It was better in every single way.

But I need to know what the fuck happened at the end there.

They jump towards each other, they show his sis having an orgasm or something, then credits?
What.
The.
Fuck.
Exactly. Stay away from the second season and you'll be fine.

It's like they looked at the first season and said "you know what? there weren't enough characters!". Seriously, WAY TO MANY NEW CHARACTERS.

Black Lagoon is my most re-watched show. It's extremely gun heavy with big references to John Woo movies, Terminator and other 80's action movies, Yakuza and Mob movies and all the characters are pretty much villains of one sort or another

Berzerk (Think its with a Z). Amusing especially with the gay undertones :)

Chobits and Hand Maid May are also amusing.

I can name quite a few...
Baccano!*, Kobato, Spice and Wolf*, Bakemonogatari*, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya* (WARNING: the second season will piss you off and unless you LOVE the series, you'll start to hate it!), Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Chobits, Cowboy Bebop*, Lucky Star, Clannad*, Trigun*, Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, Seitokai No Ichizon, K-ON (yes, I was fine with the generic moe moe), Toradora!, Sword of the Stranger, Neon Genesis Evangelion and Rozen Maiden.
Edit: * means are the ones that I think are the best of the list.

higurashi- death note and elfen lied smacked together in a bloody frankenstein monster fest of mystery, horror, lolis and gore.

or if you want a detective story, go for detective conan (case closed).. though the series is over 500 episodes long, so i dunno if you can get into that one (i've only seen about 160 episodes myself, but don't worry, the story NEVER progresses, it's very episodic in true american style so you can watch whatever episodes you want)

If your looking for something short, watch the Appleseed movies.
Appleseed: Ex Machina (the second one) is the best out of the 2.
Love em.

Tora Dora: Its like a comedy/romance but for guys.
Welcome to the NHK: A paranoid guy who thinks the world is out to get him and his reincorporation into the real world through an odd girl and his otaku neighbor.
Great Teacher Onizuka: A story about a former gang leader/ delinquent and his mission to become the greatest teacher in Japan even though he has no qualifications whatsoever.
