Recommend an obscure RPG (for PS2)

I'd toss my vote in for Ar Tonelico (and if you like compounding stuff for a requirement of part of the game) the Atelier Iris series (1-3 on PS2) and Mana Khemia: Alchemists of Al-Revis.

Where the person said that "if you didn't like Persona 3: FES, then don't touch the SMT games", I wholeheartedly DISagree. P3's 'relationship' system kinda screwed the whole experience for me, to the point I refuse to play the game over as FES out of the sheer annoyance of that part of the game. SMT: Nocturne was (and I know this has already been said) EXTRODINARILY punishing in regards to the turn press or insta-death systems. However, Nocturne's story was amazing, the art is unique, and the gameplay (though frustrating sometimes) was excellent.

If you liked Disgaea, there's always Disgaea 2, Phantom Brave, La Pucelle: Tactics, and Grim Grimoire. Seems I ended up listing off a ton of Atlus/Nippon Ichi's games >.<;.

Anyway, have fun with whatever you find.

Not sure if it's any good, but one of the most rare RPGs on the PS2 is a game called Magna Carta. I believe I heard that it had only one print run, and that was it.

Also, my RPG friend has been getting into the Wild Arms series, so maybe that's worth checking out. A bit easier to find, too.

Tales of Symphonia, but I'm not sure if it's out for the PS2
Nope, Symphonia is still only available on GC (and also the only Tales game on GC).

The only Tales games to come out on PS2 in chronological order: Destiny II, Legendia, and Abyss. Rebirth came out between Destiny II and Legendia, but I don't really count that one since it never saw a release outside of Japan.

magna carta being the rarest,im not to sure about that. we almost always have at least one copy of that in our store, used because it did go out of print fairly quickly. i would say marvel vs capcom 2 is less common. or are u just talking about rpgs?

I forgot to recommend Dark Cloud 2, deep, interesting and very, very fun, that and the graphics are really pretty.
I preferred Dark Cloud 1. Ball-bustingly hard, but it was fun.

Well, I kinda figured that since the topic was titled "Recommend an obscure RPG (for PS2)," then we might be limiting ourselves away from the beat-em-up genre.

I highly, highly recommend Star Ocean: Till the end of time. It completely rocked my socks off. You will not in any way regret purchasing that game.

You might also want to check out Kingdom Hearts 2. Although it isn't turn based, it has many RPG elements that make it difficult to classify as an action game. However, if you play it you should play on hard mode. Unless you suck at video games. Then normal should be fine. Unless you can only play with one hand. Then easy mode would be perfect.

Steambot Chronicles is a neat little gem from Atlus, it's sort of a non-linear, light and fluffy Miyazaki-esque title that has to do with mecha. One of the most original games I have ever played and that's saying something, definately not for everyone though. Must like Mechs and Miyazaki movies like Porco Rosso and Kiki's Delivery Service. Story takes a dark turn towards the end however.
I 100% agree with you Pedro. It's my favourite PS2 title. Not really sure if it fits in djninjah's list. Also, it's one of the easiest games I've played.

Where did you see DQ 8 as the best selling PS2 game ever. As far as I know, that distiction goes to Grand Turismo 3.
Actually, GTA: San Andreas is the highest selling PS2 game. GT3 is second.

Dragon Quest 8 did sell very well indeed though, managing to be in the top 20 on the platform despite only really being well known or popular in Japan.

It's a good choice if you want a traditional turn based RPG.

If you want something more active, then it's hard to go wrong with a Star Ocean game. I don't think SO3 has the strongest story in the series (that twist is iffy), but the gameplay is a lot of fun, battles are active and interesting, and the skill system has some much needed refinement.

Tales of Destiny 2 came out for the PS1. Sure, it and TOD came out in JAPAN for PS2, but then again, Tales of Symphonia came out in japan for ps2.

Oh, and if you think that random dungeon generators are a waste of time, steer clear of the dark cloud series. Personally, I wish to find the chump who thought random dungeons for an entire game would be cool and kill him. Worse are the random dungeons where you restart from level one when you reenter. WHAT THE SHIT? I play RPG's because I like to advance to higher levels and get cool items to equip. I really don't care if I EVER see my lvl 1 stats ever again. Some people might get off on the whole single character, no leveling, initial equipment challenge, but I never have. Those are the same people that think that guardian forces in FF8 are totally optional. Personally, I like having my actual COMMANDS being availible.

bah, whatever

I quite liked it as well, I agree with the Ghibli-esque description. The Mech control is absolutely gash however, and it is not as non-linear as it would like to call itself.

Magna Carta was not good at all, overly cliche'd story, TRULY horrendous Voice Acting and a male lead who dresses like a chick and wears a thong, A FUCKING THONG!

Okage The Shadow King. It's really fun, it's well written and has a fun cartoonish art style, but is definitely not childish. I remember having a lot of fun playing it.
Yes. Pretty good game. Not the best, mind you, but it has its moments. The combat's not much, though.

Oh, and remember to have a memory card.

I seem to be the only one who has mentioned Front Mission at all, so I think that gives it that unknown quality you may be seeking. It is a great series made by Square Enix, with most of the titles produced before they changed their name from Squaresoft to Square Enix. Front Mission 4 on the ps2 is the only reason I bought a ps2, and I haven't regretted that decision once.
