It's good but it is a little TOO good at making you like or hate some characters. and it will make you feel DIIIIRTY... you know the scene I'm talking about.
Really?! Is there no one else that found it dissatisfying? I'm starting to believe that the 'fanage' of anime is turning into nothing more than a source of conversation between digital 'pals'. Is there anyone in this thread with an original thought or will everyone else just spend there time playing circle jerk with each other.
Sorry to be so rough about it all but I've been watching far too much zero punctuation lately that it's beginning to rub off... on your mother.
My apologies. I did overlook you in the sea of blind monkeys. I do find it funny though that I've been called a troll. Apparently saying it's bad is SUPER TROLL!!! ROFLCOPTERS!

It's really pretty awful. It tries really hard to be serious and dramatic but it's all undermined by the *constant* barrage of the most misogynist fanservice outside of snuff films. It just takes you right out of the story and reminds you that it's basically an h-anime with no sex scenes.
I don't just mean nudity, there are really long scenes in this show that serve no purpose but to show nude women being tortured with justifications that are so hilariously contrived that makes it feel like the writers completely zoned out and stared into space trying to figure out how to add another unbelievable stock tragedy.
I'm okay with violence, but it all gets a little unpleasant when it gets so.. rapey. It's not the good kind of unpleasant either, it's more like discovering that a friend holds racist sympathies. Irritating and kind of unnerving (for reference: horror movies are the good kind of unpleasant).
Then there's the protagonist with no personality but who is still fawned over by the entire female cast, who themselves seem to have been written for an eroge, the plot that doesn't make any fucking sense (this coming from someone who loved Serial Experiments Lain) and the opening track that I'll admit is pretty awesome.
As for it being mature: Well, it's mature in that you probably shouldn't show it to kids, but there's no emotion, no interesting fight scenes, nothing thought-provoking, no interesting plot or character developments so.. no.
Also the diclonii attack with INVISIBLE ARMS THAT MOVE AT THE SPEED OF LIGHT. I am not making this shit up. It would fit right in if this was a Bayonetta-style over-the-top action thing, but they want us to take it seriously.
It's like vanilla coke: Some people like it, and those people are wrong.
I thought it was pretty good. The comedy wasn't misplaced, the fight scenes were damn good, and the characters were interesting. The story isn't bad. The story in the manga is better, but that is because the anime doesn't go as in depth.

Actually, I didn't really like it. I found the whole story to be way to depressing. Due to having had personal experiences with depression it made me unable to watch it without friends around to make me laugh at various parts.
This is strange because I can typically watch horror films with little reaction, yet this just...hit me...somehow.
I only watched it because friend over-hyped it and lent it to me. Still the story was really just a big bi-polar mess and is not what I would call deep. There are plenty of better animes than this.

You said, if you read carefully,"Is there anyone in this thread with an original thought." Hypocrisy, innit. And i'm not upset. People can like or dislike anything they want. The world doesn't revolve around me and my opinions.
It's none too sophisticated or revolutionary (arguably not even evolutionary), but it's a powerful emotional drama with some very dark themes and deeds, the consequences of which runs through the whole thing. I for one liked it, if not so much the process of watching it - it is brutal and at times nasty - as the catharsis it ultimately brought finishing it.
I suppose I should mention it's popular enough there's a user group [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/groups/view/Elfen-Lied-Fan-Group] dedicated to it on the Escapist.
