Recommend Good Old Games.

Nox is a really fun game, an ARPG that's really something - toobad it got overshadowed by Diablo, but goddamn it was a fine experience.

To be honest I first heard about GOG a while back and I wasn't too sure about its 'legitimacy' shall we say. I know better now though, seeing how so many folks on The Escapist are customers. I am going to get it eventually, but unfortunately I took my own advice and bought AvP Classic 2000 on Steam just now (5 bucks!!!). So, you know...nightmares. Not looking forward to the nightmares.

I really do look forward to Nox though. You're right, Diablo really did overshadow it as I can recall nothing but Diablo all-nighters spent with my friend and his brother on LAN play at his house. Start a game at 6pm after work, then look out the window and HOLY SHIT IT'S MORNING!??? That and Delta Force.

Oh, nightmares only if you play the marine campaign. But it's just so good. Every now and again, I play the first marine level because I think it's fucking fantastic. Then I go and play the Predator campaign, because that's fucking boss.

That and Delta Force.

Du-u-ude, Delta Force was the first game I played in LAN. And it was just so epic. Not epicly good - lord no. Not epicly bad either. Just...epic in some uncharacterised dimension. I loved how the camouflage clothes stood out whatever you did.

Damn. DAMN. They have Delta Force on Steam's holiday sale for $1.69 and I just got The Walking Dead, Binary Domain, Dishonored and Bulletstorm for super cheap. Apparently even though Delta Force is listed as XP/2000 it will work on 64-bit Windows 7. DAMN!!!--eh I can just buy it now and play it later.

I wouldn't actually get Delta Force...like ever. Even for the novelty of it. It was fun back in the day but then the game just became bad. Well, in a good bad sort of way but still bad. It was fun while it lasted, is what I'm trying to say, but I don't see a point of playing it.

I remember classic Delta Force Matches on dialup, and it was GLORIOUS! Sure it got bad when the cheaters took over and would spam grenade launchers all over the place why flying, but eventually anti-cheaters cropped up and things were good again for a short time.

I've played a lot of games online, and in most cases hated every one of them, but I never look back with anything other than fondness at those old Delta Force II days.

Oh, and for anyone that cares, yes GOG is great, they do take paypal, and you will have more terrific classics than you'll know what to do with if you give them a spin. If you like they've got some truly great games on there from long ago, even Ultima 7 and Arcanum. Actually, there's a lot love on that site, and their sales are awesome.

Beyond Good and Evil is a great older game, it never really got mainstream attention but its an excellent game, well worth your time. it's $6.50 on Steam at the moment

I'm repeating what a lot of people already said, but I'll put in my two cents, and GOG has all these games for dirt cheap.

Freespace 2:
There's an almost mythological story behind this game that it was so good that it actually had the opposite effect on the once popular space-shooter genre and wound up killing it instead of making it more popular. The story goes that the game was so good that developers simply gave up trying to make a space sim after it. Not too sure about this story, but it's actually believable because the game is seriously that good.

Baldur's Gate 1+2, Planescape Torment:
Baldur's Gate is a "better" RPG (better combat, spells, balance, etc.) but Planescape has, to this day, the best story I've ever seen, and I'm not just talking about videogames. It's a better story than any book I've ever read or movie/TV show I've ever seen. Seriously, it's that memorable.

Sacrifice:
Not a game for everyone, but incredibly bizarre, utterly unique and unlike anything you've ever played before. Takes a while to get a hang of the strategy but once you do it's a blast.

Dungeon Keeper 1+2:
Honestly, these games are amazing because no one's ever really made anything like them before or since, and they're just fun.

Alien Shooter:
The most hilariously and insanely over the top action game I've ever played. In an average mission you'll kill around 10,000 enemies. I think by the end of the game my body count was around 2,000,000, add in cool RPG elements, awesome weapons and buckets of gore and the game is tons of fun.

How about, instead of just old games, you post a few of your PCs specs and we pick games? Example would be FTL. not an old game but i can guarantee your PC can run it fine.

Almost everything on GOG will run on fairly average systems - although I do have Witcher 1 & 2 and Riddick, which might need a better than average system. Some qualifiers as to what genres of game you like might help - I've mostly done RPGs and strategy games lately, so my recommendations won't do you much good if you want, say, action or shooter games.
As for recommendations: Psychonauts, Witcher 1&2, and Spacechem are some games that I thought were great and well worth playing. If you like RPGs and want some hidden gems, Arcanum and Temple of Elemental Evil can be fun if you're willing to put some effort into it and overlook a few flaws.

I always wondered about cheaters on Delta Force online. There was always the one guy with the satchel charge that was immune to everything.

Commenting on your request for specs - if you're shopping on GOG, specs are fairly irrelevant for all but a handful of games on there (I imagine anyone that knows about GOG has a computer that can run the older stuff.) Then talked about other stuff and the post got away from me.

Pretty much all the D&D games - in order of recommendation - Planescape Torment, Baldur's Gate 1 and 2, Icewind Dale 1 and 2, Temple of Elemental Evil.

If you're talking about D&D games, it would be a sin not to mention the great Gold Box games. (especially the FR and Dragonlance series)

True, however, I was just listing what's on GOG. Although, now I see, I missed Neverwinter Nights.

I really recommend Uplink Hacker Elite. It's a great hollywood-style hacking simulator. Somewhat simple, but great, pretty much the best hacking-sim made. Also the replay value is quite high. And after you finish it, you can search for Onlink, a (standalone) mod for Uplink that ads new features and a separate storyline. Sadly, Onlink was never finished and the last build they got out has some save issues, but the original code Onlink is based on (a.k.a. Uplink) is so bad in design that the developers decided to abandon the mod in favor for a new game made from scratch, but with a similar feel to it as Onlink. Not sure if someone repaired the save system, haven't checked in on them in awhile.

TL;DR: Play Uplink, it's good.


EDIT: How could I forget? Mount&Blade: Warband. Just awesome. Great medieval rts/rpg game, with a big modding community adding new things and making the game better. Depending on the mod though, you might have some performance issues, some demanding quite the amount of RAM (4GBs should do I think) and others also require GPU performance, but you can lower the settings, and the biggest mod (Floris) has three versions depending on what your PC can carry.

Also, for a PS2 game, you could try Persona 4. I found it quite good, only that I played it too much and need a break from it now. The thing is, if you don't have a PS2 and go for the emulator, you will require a good CPU for it. I have a Core2Duo @ 2.53GHz OC @3.02GHz and the game lags at some points. A friend of mine runs the game smoothly though with an Intel i3. Also to mention that my GPU is not used even at 40%, so it's quite CPU intensive but that's how emulators are.

If you wanted great nostalgia, then hands down Half Life every time, I haven't checked out the HD version for it, is it any good?
Other than that, I remember Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy was a fun game, quite buggy and AI was a bit dumb bit still great fun.
Rome Total War for the strategy category.
Or KOTOR, my favourite game of all time.

Well, instead of investing is some super PC I figured just play old games I missed out on that my PC could handle. So far, I picked up KOTOR 1 & 2 and San Andreas. Also, considering Thief. Anything else you recommend I pick up?

How old is your computer because a word of warning with all 3 thief games you will run into issues running multi core processors systems and a os above windows ME. There are however workarounds for these issues but just so you know they wont just be install and play games, however that said I dont know if the GOG versions have been optimized for newer systems I do know that the steam version have not been optimized for newer systems.
