Recommend me a fantasy action-RPG with an epic story!

From this generation is difficult because there haven't been many amazing rpgs that I have really liked that had an amazing story. My favourite is Fallout 3 but I admit the story is only there to set you off into the wastelands however if I can use any generation I would say.

Final Fantasy X. An odd but incredible story, some find the Japanese story too foreign to appreciate but I absolutely love it and if you can allow yourself to like the characters and feel the impending threat then you will enjoy it so much.

Kingdom Hearts. Again a bit of an odd story but it's a lot of fun and you can really appreciate the scale of the universe. Along with that, the variations in scenery are just so fantastic, one minute you are in the middle of Tarzans jungle, the next you are fighting in Hercules' Colosseum. It ties in with Disney stories but at no point does it feel childish and I promise you it's a blast.

However if it must be from this generation then the best I can think of is lost odyssey. The story is beautiful and moving, I cried several times throughout. I must warn you, there is a boss battle very early on in the game who is incredibly difficult and without bucket tons of grinding and luck, you will lose. Research it before you play it and you should be fine

Hope that helps

No one else has said 'Tales of Vesperia' yet so if you're interested in JRPG with good characters and a good 'traditional' jrpg story it might be worth your time.

Definitely go with Dragon Age if you don't mind a difficult game. It's a bit tough to play/get in to, but give it time and you'll fall in love with the world.

Took me almost a year to, but now it's one of my favorite games. Don't ask why. I've changed a lot over the past year :p

Dragon Age 2. You may have heard otherwise (lulz), but it's actually completely awesome.

Action.

And from this generation. That's, uh... tricky. I'm not good at current-gen stuff. If you're okay with a completely ancient (by comparison to current-gen, that is. It's only SNES) action RPG that has a couple gameplay flaws, Terranigma. The story is second only to Planescape: Torment.

Slightly more recently? Morrowind lacks balancing issues because it has no balance. That said, it's great fun, and while the story is somewhat poorly paced/clunky at times, both it and the setting are quite good. Also a nice break from "have some generic medieval fantasy yet again".

Should I dare say Demon's Souls? I don't recall if it had a story because I was mostly angry at the game for being too damn hard. But I suppose if you like a...challenge, then that one's good.

Other ones have been mentioned, so eh: Dragon Age, Elder Scrolls...don't know if White Knight Chronicles falls into the action category. Probably does.
Actually, I haven't played Dragon Age 1 myself. I played DA2 for a while and it was alright. According to my friend, it gets better after a while because of the NPC's interactions and quests or something. He also recommended to play on Easy if you just wanna enjoy the game and not get frustrated by it.

While it's not quite this generation, I'd say it's close enough. Who doesn't have a PS2 anyhow? Persona 4. While it's not epic in the sense that you may be looking for, it's a game that makes you care about, and for, its characters more than any other game I've played. the overall plot is a great murder mystery story, and it's a nice change from the usual RPG story fare. I recommend it if you're in the mood to try out something new.

Torchlight. >_>

Unabashed Diablo clone it may be, but it's colorful, has great gameplay and a sense of humor (just listen to some of the lines from the blacksmith in particular :p). Also, if you're an Alchemist to start, you can eventually fire Frickin' Laser Beams from your hands and call down the Wrath of God upon thine enemies. Plus, there's tons of mods out for it, at least on the PC. The story isn't the main focus, necessarily, but it's there and it has a touch of the "epic sweep" about it.

Dragon age is probably about as far from action as you can get considering that the more difficult battles tend to slow down to a pace that more resembles turn based RPGs than anything else. Still, you claim to like KOTOR so you may have a more lenient disposition toward the boring stuff than you may realize.

If you don't mind the weeaboo shit give just about any game with "Tales of ..." a spin. I'd steer clear of tales of symphonia 2. I heard nothing good about it, but everything else in the franchise I liked. Props to Tales of the Abyss.

You haven't said for which platform so here you go

Any if nto all the "Tales of..." games e.g. Tales of Symphonia (GC) or Tales of Vesperia (can be very expensive and hard to find)

Eternal Sonata
Infinate Undiscovery
Star Ocean the Last Hope

Well, I liked Two Worlds 2 :D. Yahtzee was right about it, not much of anything, but the main character is totally worth it. He has this evil voice, almost no morals and he only cares about the ultimate goal, everything else that he has to do to get there he just does. Story isn't too epic, but i think its good enough and game play is tollerable. But the best part? All the comments that the main character makes when: encountering an enemy, killing an enemy, finding loot or just when something out of place happens. The way he laughs after he kills some one is simply awesome, I would say that this takes the cake, makes you feel just like the maniac that the character is, very immersive.

How can it take this long to mention Bioware's sublime martial arts action rpg epic Jade Empire?

It's last gen but there hasn't been a game like it since...

Divine Divinity 2?

It's pretty actiony and you get to control a dragon flying in the air. It's pretty epic if you get the expansion.
