Dark Cloud 2(or Dark Chronicle for Europe) is the greatest action RPG and greatest VIDEO GAME of all time in my opinion.

Let's see, off the top of my head:

This Generation:
Dragon Age: Origins
Dragon Age 2
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
Torchlight

Older:
Baldur's Gate 2
The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind
Jade Empire
Diablo II

That's all that springs to mind immediately. For personal recommendations, I'd go with Baldur's Gate II as the top pick of this list (it's easily the best game of all time), but Dragon Age: Origins and Morrowind are both quite close followups.

Just wait a couple of months, and then we can all play Skyrim :D

Otherwise, Jade Empire and Oblivion are both a bit old, but still great. Dragon Age 2 was pretty good - much more of an action game than its predecessor - so you might want to give it a shot.

/edit
Or, just remembered: [HEADING=3]Mount & Blade[/HEADING]. Pick up one of the better fantasy mods - the modding community for that game is huge- and away you go. I sunk the most time I've put into any game besides an Elder Scrolls - or WoW :p - game. The combat system is pretty dynamic, and the game itself is definitely entertaining. [small]Even if there are huge balancing issues :p[/small]

The best examples I can think of that fulfills all of those requires are Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2 (though they're last gen), and (hopefully) the upcoming Final Fantasy Versus XIII will be good.
Kingdom Hearts for sure! The story is a bit odd and slow to get going, but once you get immersed in its world you can't get out. Yes, it's last gen, but who doesn't still have a ps2 kicking around?

You are going to want to go with The Witcher, it's a little bit older, but looks damn good and you wont regret it. I have only played a few hours and I already like it much more than WoW or Dragon Age. Or you could Crank that shit waaaaaay back and get some people over for dungeons and dragons. Seriously Drink some drinks and play some D&d even if its 4th edition uber easy to get people to play if you let them fiddle with the digital character builder.

Dragon Age 2. You may have heard otherwise (lulz), but it's actually completely awesome.
That may well be when it comes to gameplay, but epic story? I think not.

Planescape: Torment would be my go to for story. You can run it on a netbook, so you don't need a supercomputer, and you can get it (and Baldur's Gate 1+2, and Neverwinter Nights, and Arcanum) on GOG.

There haven't been many on the current console gen that have an epic story. At least that I have been aware of. If you have a decent PC The Witcher and Dragon Age: Origins might be worth checking out. If you want to step away from from fantasy then Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines is Source based and one of the best RPGs of all time, right up there with BG, SS2, P:T and Arcanum

I'd have to concur with this.

I mean...I am not 100% certain on what one means by 'action' since DA2 does make its combat more action-y while still retaining RPG elements so..., but either way the story actually WAS different from what Bioware usually does and I actually did find myself a lot more in the morally gray area by the end of it all.

Or you can be a snob and just go 'Pah! OLDSKOOL RPGs are the only ones that can EVER make a good story and especially not Bio-tard games!" but since you've emphasized of 'this generation' as opposed to that of almost a decade ago, I have to say that the story in Dragon Age 2 actually *is* different and frankly a lot better since in many ways it tries to break out of the tropes Bioware usually uses in their stories.

It isn't a perfect game. Its gameplay, while moving into a very interesting direction, does still leave some things to desire. But as far as stories go? One of the better modern RPGs I've played with it, full stop, with the only one that was really as, if not even better, at it being Alpha Protocol, but...that's not a fantasy RPG so...no dice there for you. :(

Someone please define what an action RPG is. The only games I can think of that match my idea of that are Kingdom Hearts, Kingdom Hearts 2, the Tales series, and Dragon Age 2. When I see 'action' I think non turned based and constant button pressing. RPG means developing a character. Assuming that I have the same idea, those are the only games that I can think of that meet the request. I personally think they all have good stories, but I'll admit story is a matter of taste.

I came in here to say "JADE EMPIRE" then you put that damn generational restriction on me. But you can play in on a 360 with a patch that auto downloads, so it's compatible for plenty of people on this generation.

Mass Effect series? It's Sci Fi though.

Maybe Oblivion, but plenty of people (including me) don't really like it, while others love it.
Probably worth giving it a go, just to make your own opinion.

DA2 has worse gameplay than DA:O, but the plot is actually much, much more interesting.

.. Unless you meant epic in the proper English sense, in which case you're completely right.

Thinking of trying out Dragon Age, but i dunno yet. Loved Mass Effect 2 and KOTOR so i defs trust Bioware.
Oh, you haven't played DA. Yeah definitely play that, I genuinely felt like it had been made just for me. Greatest game I've played in like... 8 years.

You haven't said for which platform so here you go

Any if nto all the "Tales of..." games e.g. Tales of Symphonia (GC) or Tales of Vesperia (can be very expensive and hard to find)

Eternal Sonata
Infinate Undiscovery
Star Ocean the Last Hope
This guy, I give you props. You know good games when you see them.

Although I have to admit Infinite Undiscovery wasn't all that good to me. I've played through the story once, dropped it and I tried to pick it up again. I couldn't get back into it.
Magna Carta on the otherhand... is short imo but I enjoyed it very much.
