TERA Online just went free to play. If you haven't had a chance to play it yet, it's definitely worth checking out. The combat is fresh and exciting. Don't let the wusses screaming loli scare you away. Ain't no one gonna force you to play Elin.

League of Legends.

I've been playing for over 3 years now and it's the only mmo game that has kept me interested that long.

sure the community sucks but damn it's good!

League of legends is a MOBA (Multiplayer online battle area) not an MMO (Massively multiplayer online) game. MMOs tend to be recognized by personally designed avatars and wide open worlds similar to Planetside 2, Everquest, and Raiderz. MOBA's tend to be recognized by much smaller battle arenas with a set roster of characters to choose from . Examples include League of legends, Super monday night combat, and Awesomenaughts

Anyway, the only free to play MMO's that Ive felt are wothwhile are Planetside 2 (a MMOFPS that requries a really high specs machine to run well) and Raiderz (a traditional MMORPG focused on big monster boss fights). Although there are a few i havnt yet tried like Tera and as much as I want to say SW:TOR their business model and the restrictions of Free to play players is just garbage so I wont recommend that on principle

Planetside 2, I suppose. It's pretty different to the last two suggestions. It's a futuristic FPS.

I second Planetside 2
Its amazing as long as you are Terran Republic (dam heretics and rebels). Try to join an outfit its more fun when you are in a giant organized team. seriously join the space communists.

Firefall in another MMOFPS, except its more PvE than PVP(planetside). Think an MMO borderlands. Sadly it isn't out yet, but is should come out of closed beta-pretty soon.

If you were considering Guild Wars get that too.

I found Dungeons And Dragons Online quite good fun. Maybe since i really enjoyed playing usual D&D, so the rules in that MMO were more easily grasped.

Guild Wars 2 is possibly the best MMO I've ever played. Also...

Lord of the Rings Online
Dungeons & Dragons Online
TERA
Aion
Champions Online
EverQuest (the original giant MMO)
EverQuest 2
Mortal Online

Really, just go to Steam's free to play section and take a look around.

I'd say try:

Lord of the Rings Online - exploration and lore heavy, and mostly theme-park, similar to WoW in its mechanics, with a stunningly realised world. If you enjoy Tolkien's books, or to a lesser extent Jackson's movies, I'd recommend this game.

Fallen Earth - an indie developed post-apoc MMO with an emphasis on first/third person shooter style combat. There are hotbars but they are for secondary and support skills rather than the core combat mechanics. A bit rough around the edges, but it tries to be different and often succeeds. Quite sandboxy. Recommended if you like crafting, western style settings and/or Mad Max movies.

Star Wars: The Old Republic - I haven't played it far enough to say whether or not the F2P model becomes too restrictive or not. You've played WoW so the mechanics will be instantly familiar, and if you like Bioware style storytelling you will like this, since it's basically WoW + Mass Effect meets KOTOR. I have reservations about it as a long term MMO, but as the closest we'll ever see to KOTOR 3 it's pretty darn good.

However if you do go with SWTOR do not role a Sith as your first character because whilst the Sith are amusing their starter world of Korriban sucks. Roll an Imperial Agent instead. Agents are good.
