I also have to speak up for Recettear. It actually got me playing JRPGs again after several years.

Hmmm

Final Fantasy VII

Well, there is always Septerra Core. I don't know how well it runs on modern PCs, but it was a fun little title in the JRPG style. If I remember correctly, it was actually made in Germany, but you wouldn't know it to play it
You certainly wouldn't, since it's Canadian. ^_^

At least, I think that's where Monolith comes from...

Edit: <link=http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/septerra_core_legacy_of_the_creator>Here's the link to the Good Old Games page for Septerra Core. If they have it, It's a pretty safe bet that modern computers will run it, or at least that they'll run the version they have for sale.
Wow, this really looks interesting. I also have to say that I like less known games for some reason, and this one seems like one of those games.

A whopping 100 hours of gameplay with a very intriguing storyline.
Really? Reminds me of Planescape: Torment. Could these two games be similar?
Eh...no. Quite different games. Mainly because Torment is really just that unique. Maybe in the sense of having a long story, they're similar, but Torment's open-endedness, extreme focus on dialogue, realtime-esque combat, and deeply personal themes are contrasted by Septerra Core's overall linear story (with a vast open world), Active Time Battle combat (think FFVI), and story that's a little more epic in scope, if not execution.

That said, I do like Septerra Core a lot. It's got a few problems (it really feels mind-numbingly long at times, some of the fighting can get repetitive, and it feels a bit restrictive requiring Maya to always be in the party), but overall is pretty good. The ATB combat is one of the best I've played, the cards are fun to play with (especially when you finally get the Summon card), the characters are mostly likable or at least interesting, it really is fun exploring each of the world layers when you're able to, and it's got the friendliest party experience system I've yet seen. While all characters level up at different rates (to different effects; some get extra powers at new levels, some require item upgrades), they all share the same experience...even the characters you haven't recruited yet.

The story can get a bit convoluted, but it's all pretty interesting. The ending kinda sucks balls on toast, but at least it's not that long.

As it turns out, we're both wrong. Monolith was connected, but they were just the publisher for the US market. However, the German connection was also on the publishing end; apparently, the world wide publisher came from Germany. The company that actually made the game was called Valkyrie Studios, and were located in the U.S. Monolith studios is actually the reason I know about this game -- they did a rerelease somewhere in the early 2000's which had Septerra Core and Shogo: Mobile Armor Division, which they actually did develop, together for $10. I grabbed it for Shogo, which got much more playtime out of me than Septerra Core, but Septerra Core was pretty good itself. Man do I miss those old $10 jewel case releases...

Speaking of total flukes, I only found out about the game because my cousin randomly lent it to me. My cousin who I see once every two years for maybe four days at a time.

Also how I got Dungeon Keeper, actually.

I do not think you will find many JRPG's on the PC. They are nearly non-existent on that platform. There are a couple, like last remnant, or the crappy (or so I have heard) ports of FF7 and FF8. You could emulate, but you know it's illegal and all that, so you might not want to do that.

Get a PsP emulator or whatever and get Persona 3 Portable!
I was gonna say the same thing.
You can't go wrong with Persona.
Start with 3 and go to Persona 3 FES and then 4.
You won't regret it.

Does Portable have FES in it? According to the start screen it says it does but I have my doubts.

Mmm no, not really. But I got a PS2 emulator and it works just fine.
Not sure how legal it is ;)

It's a matter of 2 clicks, don't think it's something too complicated.

Tho I am not sure if it'll work on any computer. If your pc is older than two years then there's a chance it won't work. :p

I'm using it on the PsP though...(I don't like the emulators) (As an added bonus: Why the f*** can't I find a copy of Persona 4 anywhere?!)

Get an emulator that doesn't exist!? You crazy internet user.

PS2 emulator would be a much more realistic option.

I beg to differ >:
Persona 4 was almost as good as 3, and in fact, not very different from it either.
The characters are very likeable too. And I totally didn't expect the last plot twist.

The Last Remnant was good (IMO). It actually runs and loads on PC quite well, compared to the near unplayable console versions. The ironic catch is that you'll probably need a controller to play the game right, the M+KB controls for it were less than ideal.

There is also Recettear, a charming (and immensely Japanese) indie title. It's fun and addictive.
Ninja'd...

OT What this fine person just said. It's quite good, both the games.

If I remember correctly, it was actually made in Germany, but you wouldn't know it to play it -- it was even advertised as something that fans of Final Fantasy VII would enjoy. Also, FFVII, FFVIII, FFXI and FFIV all received PC releases. FFVII has the problem that Nobuo Uematsu's ground breaking score sounds crappy due to the tinny soundblaster midi that it uses, but is apparently improved in other areas. I can't comment on the other Final Fantasy games, except to say that FFVIII has a mini game included in the PC version that was otherwise impossible to play in the US, due to the Pocket Station, which is essentially a PSX version of the Dreamcast's VMU, never being released in the US.

That's the exact game I had in mind when I read this thread title...just couldn't remember the name of it. Was a really good knock-off of FF7.
