I'm in a lonely place Escapist forums. The games that used to give me such joy now feel lifeless and empty. It's as if they don't want me playing them anymore. I'll boot up New Vegas and by the time I reach the Wasteland and blow the heads off a few Mole Rats with my sniper I start to feel bored/listless again. It wasn't always like this. I used to relish the shoot-outs inside the NCR base, the pointless gambling in the casinos, the indiscriminate hobo murdering... but that special part of my soul responsible for cathartic pleasure just isn't stimulated anymore.
I played Dayz, which was amazing once I got into it. I played with my brother and a few friends but camping Elektro with high powered rifles got old after awhile. I've enjoyed all kinds of games before, these two are just the most recent. I love System Shock 2, Fallout, Vampire: Bloodlines, Harvest Moon: Magical Melody, Civilization...
But recently I haven't been able to connect with a game. I just stumbled on the Steam Greenlight thing going on, and was amazed at the multitude of unique ideas and awesome game proposals and it struck me that somewhere out there there must be a game that I could fall in love with that I just haven't heard about/had the chance to play yet. A couple of the games that particularly struck me where Kenshi (http://www.lofigames.com/) and Sangfroid (http://www.sangfroidgame.com/), although both of them are still in beta.
So I come to you, fine forum dwellers, and I ask, what game should I try? What games have resonated with you? Are there any really fantastic indie games I might not have heard of that you love? I tried Project Zomboid recently, but wasn't really excited about it...
My ideal game would have an in-depth RPG system and be set in a rural or wilderness setting. It would have powerful (or at least effective) writing and themes of religion and human suffering. I realize that probably no game has been made like that, and I appreciate that solid mechanics can tell a much better story in a videogame than dialogue or description ever can, but that's just my fanciful "ideal game".
So if anyone out there has heard of a game similar to that, or just wants to let me know about a game that meant a lot to you, or that you particularly enjoyed and think I might also, please. I want to hear it.
EDIT: Oh, before anyone mentions them, I've played the Witcher games too, and Skyrim.
