Recommend me a PC game... [Like DayZ/Fallout/Mount&Blade]

I'm in a lonely place Escapist forums. The games that used to give me such joy now feel lifeless and empty. It's as if they don't want me playing them anymore. I'll boot up New Vegas and by the time I reach the Wasteland and blow the heads off a few Mole Rats with my sniper I start to feel bored/listless again. It wasn't always like this. I used to relish the shoot-outs inside the NCR base, the pointless gambling in the casinos, the indiscriminate hobo murdering... but that special part of my soul responsible for cathartic pleasure just isn't stimulated anymore.

I played Dayz, which was amazing once I got into it. I played with my brother and a few friends but camping Elektro with high powered rifles got old after awhile. I've enjoyed all kinds of games before, these two are just the most recent. I love System Shock 2, Fallout, Vampire: Bloodlines, Harvest Moon: Magical Melody, Civilization...

But recently I haven't been able to connect with a game. I just stumbled on the Steam Greenlight thing going on, and was amazed at the multitude of unique ideas and awesome game proposals and it struck me that somewhere out there there must be a game that I could fall in love with that I just haven't heard about/had the chance to play yet. A couple of the games that particularly struck me where Kenshi (http://www.lofigames.com/) and Sangfroid (http://www.sangfroidgame.com/), although both of them are still in beta.

So I come to you, fine forum dwellers, and I ask, what game should I try? What games have resonated with you? Are there any really fantastic indie games I might not have heard of that you love? I tried Project Zomboid recently, but wasn't really excited about it...

My ideal game would have an in-depth RPG system and be set in a rural or wilderness setting. It would have powerful (or at least effective) writing and themes of religion and human suffering. I realize that probably no game has been made like that, and I appreciate that solid mechanics can tell a much better story in a videogame than dialogue or description ever can, but that's just my fanciful "ideal game".

So if anyone out there has heard of a game similar to that, or just wants to let me know about a game that meant a lot to you, or that you particularly enjoyed and think I might also, please. I want to hear it.

EDIT: Oh, before anyone mentions them, I've played the Witcher games too, and Skyrim.

well if you haven't theres always the first two fallout games, they're pretty much exactly what you described

the stalker games also fits your description, though they are quite difficult so be prepared.

if you want something different then try out binding of isaac, never seen anything like it and its on steam in a bundle for like 2,77 euro.

and thats all i can think of, hope it helps.

Uh... the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games perhaps?

I'm personally not that keen on them and the writing is poop. However, some folks swear by them and they do have a fair bit in common with your examples.

EDIT: Ninja'd.

Oh yes S.T.A.L.K.E.R! Yeah, I'm afraid I've played them a fair bit, Shadows of Chernoble and Call of Pripyat anyway. Never tried Clear Sky, but how different could it be. I've also played the original two Fallouts, which are fantastic. Those are both spot on recommendations though! I was really immersed in their respective wastelands, enough so that I watched the Russian movie on which Stalker was based, never read the book though (I think it's called A Roadside Picnic, for those that are interested). If you watch the movie the whole throwing screws around to let others know you're friendly makes a lot more sense.

I also loved the campfires where the scavengers would pull out their guitars and sing around, really contributed to the atmosphere of the game. That's something that I loved about those games.

Have you tried Metro 2033? It's a Kinda Stalker/Fallout/Fear/Doom crossbreed

Never tried Clear Sky,
Now, if you look on any reviewing site it'l be slated to buggery.

BUT. The vanilla game is buggy, some of them game breaking. However, Mods have came to the rescue and if you do go with clear sky, i'd reccomend the CS Complete mod - It really makes the game fantastic. If you've got the machine to do it, you can also choose to have updated graphics and stuff which look amazing.

Funnily enough, it's very different to the other two games - In terms of what there is to do. The faction gameplay is really good (Providing you like Capture and Hold/Invasion type things!). The missions are more based on your goal, or directly against the faction that oposes the one you are a member of, No more of the this "Go get my gun thats in a car in a tunnel that's full of fire and snorks"

So yeah, Clear sky is fantastic i think was my point...(Rambled on a little.)

Try kicking it old school with Baldur's Gate. When it comes to writing BioWare are top dogs. The graphical update version will soon be released on Good Old Games.

I'd download a demo of Mount and blade (warband if they have one, standard if they don't), I had a lot of fun with it, and it won't cost anything for the demo. It isn't a solid story telling experience though, it's more of a sandbox wargame.

I've also had a good time with Binding of Isaac lately, but that isn't for everyone.

EDIT
E.Y.E. Divine cybermancy might be what you are looking for too, see if you can't grab a demo or something of that too.

Metro 2033 is a great game, it's not a free-roam game like Fallout but it is an epic game none the less and its really cheap.

Borderlands aswell if you haven't played it yet, also a good game and its free-roam.

Rage if you can get it cheap, its not the best game but from what ive played it's an alright game, free-roam.

Not really any good post-apolitical games out there at the moment (Not i said good, theres is a million half asses ones out there unfortunately)

I would strongly recommend "Planescape: Torment". its a dated game but if you look passed the graphics there is a very well laid out very bizarre world to enjoy. Made by Black Isle, the same studio that made fallout 2!
