Heh, I have the same problem as the OP (need a PC RPG), but looking through all the suggestions in this thread, I've played through almost all of them (multiple times), with the exception of M&B which I just don't like.

Can someone recommend me an OBSCURE PC RPG?
Eschalon book 1 OT Fallout 1&2 2 is much better but 1 is required to get the most out of 2 and is still a fantastic game
Fallout 1&2 counts as obscure? Man, I feel old. Also, played Eschalon, didn't like it.
Fallout 1&2 are toward the OP sorry to hear you did not like Eschalon how about Spellforce?
Played Spellforce 2, it was dreadfully boring. Can't make up its mind between wanting to be an RPG and wanting to be an RTS, ends up failing at both.

Ok, I understand this is starting to sound like I just don't like non-mainstream RPGs, but I liked both Risen and Gothic 3 (4 is crap though), and I played the shit out of Drakensang (a poor man's Dragon Age, but still good). I wanted to give Divinity 2 a spin, but that thing just wouldn't run properly.

Try Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. It's an old one, but damn good. The first actual RPG I really liked. It's on original X-Box (and yes, it is backwards compatible, even without the patch) and the PC.

hmm Titan Quest?
Played it and the expansion. Inferior to Diablo 2 in almost every way, and not very obscure. Also some chinese-influenced D2 clone as well, which was decent and Throne of Darkness (or some such) which is a Japanese D2 knockoff.

Let's put it this way: If it's been reviewed by Gamespot and has a score of 7.0 or greater, I either own it, played it or know enough not to want to play it...

That's why I asked for obscure. ;)

Challenging? Fun? RPG? Sounds like Demon's Souls to me. It is an action RPG, but its unforgiving nature appeals to those who are drawn to challenge.

The only problem being that it's a PS3 exclusive and the OP asked for PC games. Heck, if they'd release Demon's Souls on the PC, I'd be lining up to buy it on day one and playing the shit out of that game!

Drakensang: The River of Time

I only found out about the sequel today, myself. The first one is pretty damn good and I understand the sequel improves on it in every way.

I'm going to do what I always do and shamelessly advertise for Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines. Plot quality and - more importantly - NPC design is simply awesome here. You do have to put up with some bugs and not always pretty graphics (game's a bit old), but it's got a lot of replay value and the leveling system (what OP mentioned) is fun. Also, you don't have to be a fanboy of the World of Darkness to play this game, you BECOME a fanboy after you've beaten it.
