Hi guys,

my mom has night shift at 25th, so I'd like to entertain my dad a bit.

Can you recommend any good SF games, preferably RPG/dialogue heavy with nice visuals?

More than less character based. Something he could watch and dive in, like a good movie.

We went through ME and back, so that's out of equation. Thanks for any suggestions

Knights of the Old Republic could fill this requirement. Also, I'd throw out Deus Ex: Human Revolution as an option. Both are story heavy RPG's that feature plenty of cinematic cutscenes.

As a bonus, they're both considered to be high end games.

SF as in science-fiction?

I like to go about recommending Echo Night: Beyond, if anything because it's gone by largely unnoticed and that's a shame, it's a really good sci-fi, survival horror game with a creeping atmosphere.

I thought this was about Street Fighter.
thought the same damn thing, wasn't sure...

but i think johny novgorod got it, science fiction. in that case..

I recommend Deus Ex Human Revolution, great rpg with good visuals and a story to jump into, also recommend KOTOR

and MAYBE Alpha protocol, it's gameplay is similar to mass effects, and it's a spy rpg with massive depth in your choices, so maybe he will like that.

I'll second Deus Ex, great game if you like Sci-fi..
Even though it's fairly linear it gives quite a sense of freedom and your options in dialog are nicely varied too so you never feel pushed into anything.

Unless the OP come and clarify things, "SF" could mean anything from street fighter to star fighter to super famicom. "Sci-fi" is already an acronym for science fiction, making an acronym out of an acronym just feels.....wrong.

If you can deal with not getting sequel and a horrible, horrible cliffhanger ending, then my personal favourite sci-fi game ever is called Advent Rising. It's an action game with a good story, some RPG elements in upgrading your skills with weapons and powers, and there are even some choices that have a decent effect on the story. Unfortunately it was planned as a trilogy, but didn't sell well enough to warrant sequels. The game literally ends with the words "To be continued" on a black screen, with no closure what so ever. I'm still sad about that actually... And now I have to go play it again...

That game was fun as hell. Probably the first truly buggy game I ever played and noticed (there was one particular level transition on the Xbox version that would occasionally just stop the game because it would never leave the cinematic even after the main character was no longer on the same screen), but it was really cool messing around with all of the different powers, which helped liven it up a bit considering it ripped so much else off from Halo. Dat ending makes me sad still, too.

OT: Well, as other people have said, Knights of the Old Republic is basically the precursor to Mass Effect, which was essentially just Star Wars sans Lightsabers. It uses modified Dungeons & Dragons rulesets for combat, though, which could either add to the enjoyment or kill it completely.

Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward is extremely heavy in dialogue... what with being a visual novel with puzzles that are difficult as fuck to figure out... but it's only for the 3DS or PS Vita.

Binary Domain was pretty interesting for what it was. I'd say relatively dialogue-heavy considering it was just a third-person shooter.

There's always the Metal Gear Solid franchise, as well, though the player doesn't really have any direct input on the story.

There are quite a few JRPGs that could fall about halfway into the Sci-Fi prerequisite, too, though those are often much more of a "your mileage may vary" mixed bag.

And I guess another recommendation for Deus Ex: Human Revolution as well. Damn fine game.

Oh wow, that's a pretty bad bug... I played it on PC, so maybe it just wasn't there, or I got lucky, or it had been patched out before I got the game...

Anyway, I'm gonna have to throw in a second for Binary Domain. It's really japanese, but it has really solid combat, a pretty good story and decent characters, and shooting the legs and arms of the robots just doesn't get old. Plus, it's got a kickass french combat robot on your team, who just might be one of the best characters in the game.

He means science fiction. SF is another acronym for that, it's not an acronym for sci-fi, not directly, anyway. Oh, and it has been around for...I'm thinking half a century. Maybe more. Or at least around there. SF literature, anyone? Try punching that into Google, and count how many results would be about Street Fighter books or anything that's not sci-fi related. As opposed to sci-fi related, of course.

Rant aside, KOTOR was already mentioned - it is a good one, I'm playing the second one right now (years after the first one...) and that can be pretty awesome, too. Get either, really but KOTOR 2 is really awesome, I'm digging it so far. And, hey, it's Star Wars - your dad is probably a fan. Also, the KOTORs are more or less "Mass Effect in the Start Wars galaxy".

Firstly, did you play the Mass Effect sequals together? It seems like a really obvious answer, but the second one is almost as good as the first with better game play.

Now thats out of the way; the latest Deus Ex game, Human Revoloution, is probably the most obvious choice. It has superb visual design with an interesting narrative that allows for some player choices in both gameplay (e.g., lethal vs non-lethal, stealth vs charging in) and dialogue.

The next closest to your description in Bioware's previous Sci-Fi RPG, Knights of the Old Republic. While dated, it didn't fall into the trap of going for "realism", for lack of a better term, without the technology behind it. It has some really interesting enviroments (large city planets, ocean worlds, etc.)and, most importantly, a fantastic narrative with just as much dialogue as Mass Effect - though with the lack of main character vocie acting, it lacks the same cinematic touch both Mass Effect and Deus Ex: Human Revoloution have behind them.

Thats about it for Science Fiction role-playing games in the last decade or so, but here are some non-Science Fiction role-playing games that might interest you:

Dragon Age; Origins - Released after Mass Effect, this is the first of Bioware's current fantasy RPG line. Like Knight of the Old Republic, it lacks main character voice acting (though the second one has it). It is, however, the best fantasy RPG to come out for a very long time with a lot of dialogue. It's certainly too long for a single night though, it took me days of ridiculously long gaming sessions to finish it the first time.

Holy shit, it's 5:00am. Sorry, I might finish this later. I got to go!

Also, the context of his post (saying he's been through Mass Effect) should make it clear. People are just being deliberately thick-headed.

OT: Knights of the Old Republic I and II, Deus Ex and Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Shadowrun (the SNES or Genesis versions. They're easy to find on an emulator). Also keep an eye out for Cyberpunk 2077. I'm not sure if that's supposed to come out in 2013 or not, but it's in the good hands of the people who made The Witcher games. Star Wars 1313 might be good too

SF?

Shining Force?

Why yes I can recommend some good Shining Force games. The first two are fantastic. The first is one of my favourite games.

Other fairly recent SF games I can think of...

Borderlands: Not much RPG/dialogue but if he likes shooters than this is a good one and definitely has some funny enemies.

X-Com: I haven't gotten too far into it yet but seems to have quite a lot of cutscenes and customization though not much RPG dialogue. Good if your dad likes turn-based strategy games.

Then there's also a few of the SF MMO's if you think he'd like to try those...SWTOR, STO, or Fallen Earth (if he likes Post-Apoc). All 3 of these being F2P of course.
