Ef - a tale of memories is another excellent one. Great music, extremely stylish animation, and a story with a lot of romance, drama, and many a sad moment. It's very sincere and mature with little in the way of wackiness or comedy.
What this kind sir said.

5 centimeters per second - Damnit, making my eyes sweat and all that...

Usagi Drop - Not a romance, but I'll be damned if this isn't one of the best slice of life anime I've seen.

Bakemonogatari - If you like a show for its characters and romance, this is the show to watch.

Steins;Gate - Because it's my favorite series :p

If slice of life with some romace is what you're looking for then I'd have to recommend Gosick. By the end of of the unfortunatly short 24 episode series you'll come away really caring about the characters and how they've changed.

Also I'd have to second Usagi Drop although it's not a romance, but the art style is adorable and the charcters are lovely.

Captcha: Spend time~So spend time watching these shows

Have you seen Time of Eve or Usagi Drop? If not go change that quick like.

Also awesome: Tatami Galaxy,a great skewering of time loop/romance tropes

Haibane Renmei, enough symbolism to make an English teacher jizz themselves for a year

Gakuen Utopia Manabi Straight!, a nice little slice of life show about girls making their school great. Notable at least to me for a complete lack of fan service.

Hourou Musuko, a nice little show that treats cross dressing seriously and not just wacky comedy fodder.

Oh and if you can deal with/enjoy Shaft's way of doing things then check out Bakamonagatri/Nisimongatri and Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei

I'm going to reccomend anything by Studio Ghibli because...fuck it's Studio Ghibli, but one in particular (since you said slice of life) is My Neighbors the Yamadas. It's about a Japanese family and...that's it. It's little vignettes of their life, some connected, some not. It's just their everyday life, though there are bits where it gets a little metaphorical or silly. It's rather heartwarming and gentle.
But Yamadas doesn't really have any characterization or romance.

I feel I must recommend a different Ghibli film called: Whisper of the heart. It sounds like exactly what you're looking for.

Also I don't know where you stand on the dubs vs subs debate, but due to the plot of this film, it doesn't really work in english.

If we're talking t.v. shows then Azumanga Daioh is probably the one I've seen with the least amount of "anime wackiness".

Then there's Beck, which I don't know if you can call a slice of life, but it certainly relates to my life quite a bit.

If you like kittens then Chi's Sweet Home is good. It's the slices of a kitten's life anyway!

I not sure if this count as slice of life but it is mudane (normal real day setting) like any other anime from that type.

It's called Shirokuma Cafe aka Polar Bear Cafe.

I can tell you for one thing it's surreal due to the fact the anime got talking animals that look like animal and they have the same rights as human (some go to work in the zoo).

While part of the humour revolve around Japanese puns but it's the only mudane like anime I ever watch since I'm not a fan at that type of anime in the first place. I just find that anime to relaxing to watch after working at my job.

bludgeoning angel dokuro-chan is something for you, the main protagonist is the worst pedophile in the world when he grows up, therefore heaven sends an angel to kill him, but she's too kind to kill him so she resurrects him again and again.

also, taking away an angels halo gives them diarrhea.

Hyouka is one that's airing now.
Made by the same people who made K-On, Haruhi and Clannad.
Pretty good.
Hyouka is interesting enough. Honestly, I doubt that it would be as interesting as it is without the god-tier production values, but it currently is a very fun show to watch even if its overall direction in the story is still pretty vague.
I admit the aesthetics are a large part of why I watch Hyouka.
I'm sort of hoping some more clear cut story will emerge with time though.

LOVELY COMPLEX IS AWESOME GO WATCH IT NOOOOOOOOOW

Er, ahem. Oops, seemed to have left the caps lock on there. Cough cough. But really Lovely Complex is a great anime. About a really tall girl (for being Japanese) and a short boy (even for being Japanese) and their friendship and feelings for each other. And they all speak Osaka-ben! *swoon*

you might want to try Working!! both seasons or how it's actually called : Wagnaria
Lucky Star and A-Channel are good too
can't really say that Azumanga Daioh was any good though
and The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is also good if you can include sci-fi into your circle of enjoyment
and Bartender was pretty good as well

If you like Clannad and Angel Beats, Kanon (2006 version) and Air are guaranteed to please you (I don't know if you have already seen them). Same writer, same composer, and same animation company. I worship all of these series =)

Ano Hi Mita Hana no Namae wo Bokutachi wa Mada Shiranai (or Ano-Hana if that is too much of a mouthful) is another one that I can think of off the top of my head. It's another slice-of-life drama tinged with sadness, as it deals with what people do to cope with the loss of a friend.
I have not watched any of those, actually. Judging by your descriptions of these shows, I think you've hit the nail on the head for me.

Despite being a guy, I am a huge fan of tear-jerker anime dramas ever since watching Angel Beats. No other entertainment medium can make me shed as many manly tears like anime can.

I would re-up the recommendation to watch Haibane Renmei. It has strong thematic simularities to Angel Beats, but is more subtle and darker. The first few episodes are slow, but still relay good at establishing an environment after that it gets relay addictive. Also made my cry like a baby.

Also if you had not scene Clanad After Story you should see that. Its a squeal to Clannad that most fans consider to be better than the original.

Haruhi Suzumia is kinda the other half of Angel Beats. Haruhi is rally similar to Yuri from Angel Beats! but the show doesn't have the dark atmosphere or story of Angel Beats! It was also made by Keyoto Animation who made Clannad. Unlike Clannad and Angel Beats! comedy not drama is the focus.

My favorite romance anime is Toradora. There is no dub out for it, but subtitles are available. Like Clannad (as well as Air and Kanon) is a high school romance. But doesn't come from a visual novel so there is a slightly smaller cast of characters who get more development. Also the Drama is a little more grounded in reality, no one has terminal diseases, however it still gets a lot of drama from just making you care about the characters and their relationships. I cried at Toradora many times.

Also Azamanga Dio and Bamboo Blade are very grounded funny anime slice of life shows.

Beck Mongolin Chop Squad has one of the best realistic slice of life in anime. It can be slow, but the pacing adds to the feel of realism.

Also my personal favorite slice of life is Genshiken again very realistic, buts it is about hard core anime fans on other Otaku. There is a good chance you will feel out-nereded.

How about Yosuga no Sora?
/trollface

Hmm... There was a bunch of slice o life that a friend from school recommended for me, since that is his jam.
Lets see if I can find em...

Shining Hearts: Shiawase no Pan
Aria the Natural

and there are a few others in this folder, but I'm not sure if these are slice of life or not, so I won't post them.

I've only seen the first few episodes (it was on my cable system's free on demand service for a while), but if the rest of the series is half as good, I can't recommend Aria enough. It's a slice of life show about a group of women who run gondolas in a city that's basically "Venice, but on another planet after humans have discovered interstellar travel." It's basically just a show about said women, the people they take on gondola rides, and the city itself. That city is the reason the show has an entry on TVtropes' "Scenery Porn" page. The backgrounds in that show are absolutely beautiful.

Edit: Excuse me, not interstellar. It takes place on a terraformed Mars. Also, I was semi-ninja'd by the poster above, who gave the name of the second season. The first season was called Aria: The Animation.

OK, let's imagine that he has a job now.

Seeing how the maximum he's going to work is 40 hours a week, he still has a good 40 hours to spend on not-work.

Now, are you going to recommend him an anime, or just sit there and complain?

OT: It's not romantic, but the first thing that popped to mind was "Yotsuba".

You better watch your mouth boy.
And they were STARFISH... and it was adorable.

but yeah I kinda have the same taste and I would recommend The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya and K-on(Great music and season 2 of the English dub is coming out on DVD tomorrow!)
um I guess maybe Toradora! as well although there is no english dub for that one as far as I know.

Listen to these people,Haruhi was a great show and one of my personal favorites although episodes 15-18 of the second season I would recommend skipping.
(This show is very popular it has 2 seasons a movie and a couple of little spin-offs that are kinda cute but I would recommend watching the episodes in chronological order not in the order in which they aired although some people say it is better that way because of the shows pacing, but honestly I really think its much easier to watch in order.)
Lucky Star is a great one if you want comedy/slice of life and they do reference Haruhi quite a bit.(So I suggest watching Haruhi first)
You could also try Shinryaku Ika Musume its very SoL not a lot like Clannad and is more of a comedy than a drama its about a squid girl who is trying to take over the earth as revenge for polluting the ocean and has the mentality of 8 yr. old its very silly and adorable.

Edit: Angel Beats! still holds spot number 1 on my 10 top anime list with Clannad/afterstory following closely behind. I shall bookmark this thread seeing as it is also helping me.

Have you taken a knock to the head? Did your parents send you down a mine shaft from age 10 to support your family?

There are so many things wrong with this statement. Firstly, OP is off from school, so it is fully possible that he is under the working age. Secondly, you realise the economy is still down the pan, right? People aren;t throwing around jobs like they're confetti at the moment. Thirdly, I know very few people who have ever had a temp job just for the summer holidays, what jobs are their that only want to hire staff for 6-8 weeks?

The thing about being young is that you don't have to enter the real life. You're making some serious assumptions here, and looking at this post and a couple of others that I have seen of yours recently, I would guess you have given up on this site and are just trolling people till you get kicked off.

Also, let's just say that he does find himself some part time job. MAybe even a full time job. What does he do with the time when he isn't working? Are we not allowed pass times and hobbies? If so, maybe you should get off this website and back down those coal mines.

Calling this inflammatory, what a piss-take.

Ano Hana's pretty much up your alley.

If you're into something a little more relevant, Hyouka's got that KyoAni golden slice of life seal.
