I'm looking for a new TV series and I am taking recommendations.

A few preferences:
- No sitcoms, no crime series, no animation
- No older than 5 years
- At least 2 seasons
- Preferred theme: sci-fi, fantasy, adventure, action
- Ignore the above, if it is really, really something special (I am open-minded)

I have found so far:
- Once Upon a Time (still need to watch)
- Grimm (still need to watch)
- Game of Thrones (flawed, but interesting)
- Warehouse 13 (meh, so far)
- Nikita (interesting plot development, lame/cliche action scenes)
- Walking Dead (I had to try it, but I don't like the series)

Other series I am following in genres I normally don't like:
- Castle (crime series), because of Nathan Fillion
- The Big Bang Theory (sitcoms)

Life on Mars (the UK version)
Ashes to Ashes
both have a theme a modern cop discovering that they are in 70s and 80s so its cop show with added wider mystery as what is happening. They might be a little to British in its cultural references.

Spooks. UK spy series that ran for 9 seasons. Best described as an action show but with less of the US cliches.
Rome. The clue is the title, its set in ancient Rome, in the same category as Game Thrones(sex violence but with some historical accuracy).

Out of these I've watched only two:

Heroes' first season was good - I really liked it. It's essentially like X-Men if it was a bit more subtle. The next seasons kinda started to drop the ball and at some point just went on a idiot ride. I recall...much stupidity. Then it got better and I think the last season was OK-ish but lacked a little something. Erm, as much as spoiler free as I can, while the previous seasons had high action and some epic superpowers, the last season ended with an arm wrestling match (more or less) and the spirit of friendship to face off the villain.

Prison Break was awesome - first season was really captivating, although around the middle it sort started getting predictable (as in "gee let's see what would go wrong now"). Not in a really bad way, mind you, just a couple of twists lost a bit of impact due to it. Still good. Second season was...hmm, I don't remember it as much - I recall the first one better, but I believe the second season was also good, I'd certainly suggest watching it. I haven't watched the rest, though...maybe I should.

And I'd like to chip in with Reaper - it had 1 season, then it was cancelled, got back in for a second season and was cancelled now for good. At any rate, it's about a guy who finds out his parents sold his soul to Satan. Yeah, it's not as bad as it sounds - Satan wants the guy to become a Reaper - like a bounty hunter rounding up escaped souls from hell. Oh and the is issued a new tool each time with which to catch the soul - these include a vacuum cleaner, a toaster, a sweater, a cattle prod and so on. All the while, the guy is also keeping his day job at a store. It's sort of Scoobie-Doo meets Ghostbusters.

And there is Supernatural - I've seen few episodes and it seems the show rocks but I've yet to actually watch more of it. Two brothers are hunting supernatural creatures, is the premise.

Supernatural! Holy crap it's great. It's like X-Files but funnier and with a horror setting.
Torchwood is pretty cool too I hear, haven't watched many.
EDIT: Oh and Primeval. Bit more childish but first few seasons were fun.
And if you like Big Bang Theory you may as well check out Friends. It's the most classic TV show... ever.

How could this thread go on this long without someone mentioning Community? Seriously, watch it. It's like if the Big Bang Theory was made for people with a brain and a post-1920s gender view.

And also if we're doing Sci-Fi I feel obliged to mention Stargate, Farscape, Andromeda and Battlestar Galactica. Even if they are probably so obvious and/or out of your rules you'll hate me for saying it.

I know you said no crime but you should totally watch Psych. James Roday is like Fillion 2.0 in terms of charm and being entertaining.

Breaking Bad - Bryan Cranston the most talented actor on TV, and I'd class it in the action/adventure category but it's also crime. It's got it all, action, suspense, high quality acting, a great cast, great plot and meth.

Fringe - if you grab X-Files, Supernatural, Warehouse 13 and mix them in a big pot you get Fringe. Mad Scientists, teleportation, science, explosions, an alright plot, humour, a female lead, it's got it all.

Being Human(U.K) - Werewolves, vampires, ghosts living in one house, it's got it all, romance, drama, suspense, it has it all I say(First series at least). It's also British and everyone knows we make the best TV series.

Heroes
Seen it. The premises is nice, but the execution is a bit boring. Too little super power stuff. But it's nice to see how "
normal" people live with it. Anyhow, after the writer's strike messed up the 2nd season, the series went downhill.

Prison Break
Awesome first season. 2nd season was less interesting. The 3rd and 4th were crappy.

True Blood
Not my taste. It could have been interesting, but I just found the series annoying.

Sons of Anarchy
Haven't seen it. Will check it out.

It's an original series. Good lead acting. Still need to watch the last seasons.

I will check them out. I have seen Rome. It was a nice series, but the events in the 2nd season happened to fast, because the series ended prematurely, unfortunately. It would have been nice to see 2 more seasons.

Friends? hehe... what's next? Seinfeld, Married with Children? :p

And Stargate, Farscape, Andromeda, BSG are all older than 5 years. Also, because I am a sci-fi fan, I have seen them all and I even own a few on DVD. PS. You forgot to mention Babylon 5.

You're better off taking that 5 year limit off. Science Fiction and Fantasy had a huge boom in the 90s with the dominance of Star Trek, Babylon V, Farscape, Stargate SG1, the Xena and Hercules TV series. Too much good stuff to pass up

Thought so. And not having seen Babylon 5 myself I can't really recommend it in good conscience.

And with Community I personally love it but I'd suggest should you get bored of the first season to move on to second and third before you quit it, it gets massively better. Not that the first season sucks, but beginning with second some episodes are pure genious, the first is more introductory and does less homages.
Especially the season 2 double-episode Western & Star Wars paintball finale, season 3's Law & Order-style "Basic Lupine Urology" or the season 3 Ocean's Eleven finale, which are some of my personal favourites.

I've only heard of Ghost Rider so I vaguely know the premise but I suppose. It's more like Soul Eater with less huge battles and such. So-o-o...start of Soul Eater I suppose.

By the way, this is what Satan looks like this

How can you not love the guy.

Hey, there is this show called "Start Trek", I don't know if you've herd of it :p

Thats not Satan, thats Leland Palmer from twin peaks. Twin Peaks is another show that worth looking at, its by David Lynch and like most of his work it defies description. If forced I would say quirky horror soap opera with some good gags and the guy later played the base commander in Stargate SG1. It is more 20 years old but worth a look.

There is a reason for the 5 year limit. Before that I was more active and I have watched more series, including all the series you mentioned.

It sounds vaguely familiar...

Also, that Reaper Satan guy looks evil.

The rebooted Battlestar Galactica, though older than 5 years, is rather good, though it gets a bit spiritual for my liking by the end. Still worth watching, though it can be surprisingly dark.I'd like to see Star Trek put into a situation where the 'good' guys are carrying out torture-rape on a prisoner, not for information, but because they can.

If you dug Heroes at all, there's a British show called Misfits that was similar, but more enjoyable for my money.
Relatively small cast, some really interesting super-powers, and all the English chav-speak you can handle.

When it comes to Community, definitely start with the first season and make your way forward.
There was a big shake-up recently with the show, the primary creator was removed, and its not really been as good since... First and second season are gold though, and the third is pretty strong as well.

Person of Interest had my attention for awhile, and wasn't half bad. I won't spoil it for you, but there's definitely some sci-fi-ish stuff going on there.

The Neighbors was also mildly entertaining for awhile - basically, whole troupe of aliums lands on Earth, buys a housing development and settles in, only for a human family to move into their community and learn the truth. Your mileage may vary.

I'm an animation junky personally, so that in mind, I'd recommend checking out Black Dynamite, Afro Samurai, Motor City, Tron: Uprising, Gravity Falls, Archer, The Venture Brothers - all have something of a sci-fi/fantasy bent, and all are pretty decent watches if youre into that sort of thing.
Oh, and keep an eye out for Urbance.

As for not-sci-fi related stuff, check out Extras if you enjoy Ricky Gervais - its a very unusual show that moves rather slowly, but it has some very funny - and very touching - moments. Its right on the line in terms of the 5 year mark though.
Louie is also great for funny/touching stuff, but again, no sci-fi here. Still thoroughly enjoyable.
I watched most of the first season of Wilfred, and it too was pretty enjoyable; but, yet again, no sci-fi there.

Have heard good things about Bored to Death, but havent had a chance to check it out yet.

Now, out of curiosity, when you say 'More than 5 years', how far back are we talking here? How about 20 years?
Cuz, if you want some cool sci-fi/fantasy-ish stuff and haven't seen it yet, MTV did some animated stuff back in the early 90s you might dig (and a lot of people seem to have missed). Check out Aeon Flux and The Maxx.

Have you tried Dexter or Burn Notice?

Dexter - Serial killer that stalks and kills other bad guys.

Burn Notice - What's to say that isn't covered by the intro? Spies, explosions and Bruce friggin Campbell.

It's older than 5 years, but you've seen Firefly right? You probably have but if you haven't watch it.

Some good shows mentioned so far. I'll put down something that hasn't been mentioned yet. Dollhouse. It's a cyberpunk show made by Joss Whedon with 2 13 episode series.
