Not big on more recent tv, for the most part, but lets see what I can remember...

Heroes
Seen it. The premises is nice, but the execution is a bit boring. Too little super power stuff. But it's nice to see how "normal" people live with it. Anyhow, after the writer's strike messed up the 2nd season, the series went downhill.
If you dug Heroes at all, there's a British show called Misfits that was similar, but more enjoyable for my money.
Relatively small cast, some really interesting super-powers, and all the English chav-speak you can handle.

How could this thread go on this long without someone mentioning Community? Seriously, watch it. It's like if the Big Bang Theory was made for people with a brain and a post-1920s gender view.
And also if we're doing Sci-Fi I feel obliged to mention Stargate, Farscape, Andromeda and Battlestar Galactica. Even if they are probably so obvious and/or out of your rules you'll hate me for saying it.
I haven't seen community. Will check it out.
When it comes to Community, definitely start with the first season and make your way forward.
There was a big shake-up recently with the show, the primary creator was removed, and its not really been as good since... First and second season are gold though, and the third is pretty strong as well.
Person of Interest had my attention for awhile, and wasn't half bad. I won't spoil it for you, but there's definitely some sci-fi-ish stuff going on there.
The Neighbors was also mildly entertaining for awhile - basically, whole troupe of aliums lands on Earth, buys a housing development and settles in, only for a human family to move into their community and learn the truth. Your mileage may vary.
I'm an animation junky personally, so that in mind, I'd recommend checking out Black Dynamite, Afro Samurai, Motor City, Tron: Uprising, Gravity Falls, Archer, The Venture Brothers - all have something of a sci-fi/fantasy bent, and all are pretty decent watches if youre into that sort of thing.
Oh, and keep an eye out for Urbance.
As for not-sci-fi related stuff, check out Extras if you enjoy Ricky Gervais - its a very unusual show that moves rather slowly, but it has some very funny - and very touching - moments. Its right on the line in terms of the 5 year mark though.
Louie is also great for funny/touching stuff, but again, no sci-fi here. Still thoroughly enjoyable.
I watched most of the first season of Wilfred, and it too was pretty enjoyable; but, yet again, no sci-fi there.
Have heard good things about Bored to Death, but havent had a chance to check it out yet.
Now, out of curiosity, when you say 'More than 5 years', how far back are we talking here? How about 20 years?
Cuz, if you want some cool sci-fi/fantasy-ish stuff and haven't seen it yet, MTV did some animated stuff back in the early 90s you might dig (and a lot of people seem to have missed). Check out Aeon Flux and The Maxx.
