I'm not a big anime guy, but lemme recommend a few of the ones I grew fond of that not everyone might recommend.

Cromartie High School
Bandit King: Jing
Katekyo Hitman Reborn*
Tiger and Bunny*

...that's about all I've got. The ones with * are only available in Japanese as far as I know. Dunno if that's a deal breaker for you or not.

Angel Beats - dead high school kids in Purgatory trying to assassinate God.
Crest of the Stars - not a lot of action, more of a character study of an alien princess and a human noble son in said princess' alien society.
Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade - a movie, not an anime series. Modern day setting, set in a Japan where the Axis won WW2, is an interesting twist on the Red Riding Hood story.

Both of these with a big thumb up. Eden has an amazing story, one of the best I have ever seen.

Some of my all time favorites are..

Ghost in the Shell
School Rumble
Kite
Mezzo Forte
AlchoholicXXX
Corpse Princess
Trinity Blood
High school of the dead
Desert Punk
Blassreiter
FLCL

The one I'm currently watching on Crunchy Roll is Mysterious Girlfriend X. It's currently in production and very odd. there is this whole drool thing going on that takes a few episodes to figure out what the hell is going on but then a lot of anime shows are like that.

Click the 'search' button in the top right and type in 'Recommend me an anime'. There are seemingly infinite threads of this exact title; look through them and find something that sounds good.

I've recently come across Neon Genesis Evangelion. You might enjoy that if you don't mind a few... Psychological screwdrivers in your brain...
A few? That's an understatement.

OP: Highschool of the Dead is an interesting show. At first, it plays like an anime highschool drama but shit goes down and there are zombies. However, it can get kind of gruesome and there's not really a female character that isn't a heap of fanservice.
Ehh. I was tryin to be optimistic, which I'm not good at at all... Ermm, yeah you're right, it's a mental hurricane. I'm surprised I'm still alive...

Still no mention of Puella Magi Madoka Magica? I think Hulu still only has it subtitled, but since the English dub only finished this month, that's understandable. It's a very emotionally moving anime and I'm at a loss to describe it without spoilers, but it's only 12 episodes and I think it might be my favorite anime. Even if you're an adult male who can't stand the magical girl genre, it's still very good. Quite dark.

I saw welcome to the NHK on youtube and it's good, and it's really close to home for shut ins like me.

If you're into fantasy I'd say: Densetsu no Yuusha no Densetsu (The Legend of the Legendary Heroes). Or Pandora Hearts... but you definetly have to watch Angel Beats.
