Timesplitters 2/Future Perfect. Fantastic games for the PS2 or original Xbox. Great fun if you have a few friends over (virus mode is a particular favourite).

For console I'd recommend PSOne classics only for how you can play them on PSP.

Steam is indeed very good. I'd also recommend trying out Gamersgate and gog.com. They often have some awesome deals going on.

Also, just google something like "best free to play games" and you should end up with a nice cross section to try out. No, don't get up, I'll do it for you :)

Also yeah, try out the free to play section on Steam.

Zdoom emulator for Doom series and similar games:

http://zdoom.org/News

Needs original doom WADs that are not expensive, but this emulator allows full mouse aim and jumping, the works. It's the perfect way to play doom, you can even stick it on a USB stick an play anywhere!

If you have an iPhone or iPod touch I REALLY recommend "Rage" for iOS devices, but mainly for if you have 4th gen iPhone or iPod Touch as they have a gyroscope in their internals that allow you to play in "virtual window" mode.

That's where the gyroscope effectively makes the entire device like a REALLY GOOD pointing device, as good as a mouse to aim and FUN to use! Really, really, REALLY good game on iOS.

Rome Total War... its like £5 and can be run on pretty low pieces of hardware.

If you like Rome... get a PC and get Napoleon and Shogun 2.

---------------------

General advise... get Steam... there are tones and tones of digitally downloadable games and... they have lots of sales so keep checking and they'll have stuff eventually.

Also Team Fortress 2... get that... its great and its free. You don't have to buy stuff. Everything for sale you can receive as drops.

My bad. You can see I'm not really into them can't you :p
And I'll keep that in mind as I know how irritating it is when people get the wrong terminology...
