I'll toss one there and recommend Gothic. It was the game that got me into western RPGs.

Why PC only? Surely there's nothing wrong with RPGs that are on consoles too?

Listen, forget about what everyone else is saying. You NEED to play The Witcher.

The Witcher is the best RPG I have played since Knights of the Old Republic, and I would probably go back much further than that. It is the perfect combination of innovation and the tropes that we all love. I really can't recommend it enough; in my view it's one of the games of the decade.

Oblivion. Knights of the old republic the first and the second. Mass Effect(though console is better since PC version has that shitty SecuRom.)

I'm going to go ahead and ignore that "pre-2000" requirement because it's arbitrary and silly.

Neverwinter Nights 1 & 2 and all expansions

Baldur's Gate: Tales Of The Sword Coast

Baldur's Gate 2: Shadows of Amn

Dragon Age: Origins

Torchlight (more of an action-RPG)

Planescape: Torment

Mass Effect (and soon the sequel, due for release in um... January? I think?)

I also enjoy several installations from the "Heroes of Might and Magic" series, though they are not strictly speaking RPG's but rather Turn-based Strategy and Tactics wargames. Some with better sotries than others, and all are entertaining for at least a little while.

Not the Witcher. Mass Effect.

Or KOTOR I or II or Dragon Age or Fallout 3.

And Morrowind.

For me it's not silly. Graphics in some sense do matter. Lets make an example and imagine: Imagine when Dragon Age Origins is an pre 2000 style graphics. You would tolerate through horrible loads of dialouge packed into bland text. I maybe a undeveloped brat but I just can't get full understanding of the story with a load of dialouges that look like notepads. I could when I have atleast 3D graphics even if characters inside them are made of two blocks or polygons, Cutscenes or voiceovers. Thats why I dont play pre 2000 games. I dont disrespect them as for sure some of them were a breakthrough for their time.
