It's my birthday today (20th) and i'm going to download some music for myself.

Now, i love Iron Maiden and the works of Bruce Dickinson, but find anything which sounds similar(or indeed comparable) quite rare, and so would be much desired. I like progressive metal bands such as Ayreon, power metal bands such as Blind Guardian, Masterplan or Twisted Tower Dire, and gothic/melodic bands like Within Temptation or Delain. I'm also a fan of Tyr and Alestorm.

Thanks for any suggestions :)

Well, if you like Tyr you should try Amon Amarth, if you haven't already.

Specifically, the albums With Odin on Our Side and Twilight of the Thunder God

For Prog Metal, there's no beating Mastodon.

Dio for your heavy metal. (No explanation necessary, it's Dio)

Sabaton for your power metal. (Grab their newest works for a taste. Highly recommend)

Nightwish for your symphonic metal. (Similar to Within Temptation, but metal. And better.)
Seconded, although I'd say Within Temptation are a bit better and more metal then Nightwish, but that's just my opinion.

Ever heard of Sons Of Seasons? Freaking awesome band, I think it's symphonic metal, but heavier than Within Temptation or Nightwish, and with a male singer.
You must check EPICA if you haven't already.
Tristania and Sirenia if you fell like listening to some light gothic symphonic metal (Sirenia's older songs are a lot better than their new ones, Sister Nightfall is a personal favourite).
Put Shadowside on youtube and see what you like.
Van Canto for an interesting experience.
Symphnoy X is also nice, if you don't know them you should look for them.

Don't know if you'll like my tips, I'm more into gothic/symphonic metal, but I hope something I said fits your taste.

have you listened to much Saxon? Try the album crusader. It's actually very good, and sounds rather similar to Maiden.

You think so? I'm inclined to disagree. But I haven't heard very much Within Temptation, only enough to form an opinion (said opinion isn't generous; the metal was... not metal). Which album should I look at to change my mind?
The one I like most is The Heart Of Everything, sounds heavier than anything Nightwish have done, except maybe Planet Hell.

I should look into Mastodon, i've heard a lot about them but never properly looked into them. Amon Amarth is another band i've heard of, but havn't yet looked into them, but that will change. I just hope the vocals arn't too growly. (I don't like growly vocals) Sons of Seasons defiantly looks interesting, and i have no heard of them before. May download some Nightwish- heard a few songs by them...Also maybe a few select songs... by Neverland.

I think i'll wait until tomorrow so i can look into all these bands listed (i'm running out of time tonight, i'm going on a pub crawl in a few hours) before downloading the bulk of my music.

Btw, i like the list by Mr.France, and thanks to everyone for the contributions so far!

As usual, for symphonic metal, I recommend Mirrorthrone. The vocals alternate between rasp/growling and cleans.

Upon reading your post I have come to the realization that you are essentially my Guide to Good Music's target audience in a nutshell. You have no idea how hard it will be to recommend stuff to you - not because I can't think of anything you'll like, quite the opposite in fact! Based on the list of bands you've just provided I could probably recommend anything from my collection and you'd enjoy it - narrowing this down to a reasonable list of suggestions is consequently going to be difficult, heh.

Because I'm ostensibly working at the moment, I'll just go ahead and link you to articles I've already composed about the various bands I'm going to recommend to you (complete with embedded songs and whatnot). That way I give you the benefit of a good bit of info without sitting here for hours tracking down examples (which I've been known to do in the past and would be quite happy to do later should you wish me to, I have a metric ton of bands I could be recommending based on the criteria you provided), and I get to pretend I'm being productive - everyone wins!

Okay - you're into Ayreon? Definitely check out his Guilt Machine [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.188932-Gildans-Guide-to-Good-Music-Guilt-Machine-On-This-Perfect-Day] side project if you haven't already.

If you like Masterplan you will almost certainly enjoy the lone Ride The Sky [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.189847-Gildans-Guide-to-Good-Music-Ride-The-Sky-New-Protection] album, the product of a short-lived band formed by former Masterplan members with a very similar sound. Definitely check out the Allen/Lande [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.197675-Gildans-Guide-to-Good-Music-Allen-Lande-The-Battle] project as well if you haven't already, it's awesome and combines the vocal talents of Jorn Lande and Russell Allen of Masterplan and Symphony X respectively (Symphony X should also be on your list). You may also enjoy Red Circuit [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.226783-Gildans-Guide-to-Good-Music-Red-Circuit-Homeland].

Oh, and be sure and check out Demons & Wizards if you haven't yet - it's a combination of the vocalist from Blind Guardian and the guitarist from Iced Earth (one of America's perhaps 2 power metal bands[footnote]The other one being Kamelot, which you should also check out.[/footnote]), if you like Blind Guardian you'll probably dig what they do as well.

Here are a few bands that I think you'll probably enjoy, based on your mention of Within Temptation and Delain: After Forever [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.212622-Gildans-Guide-to-Good-Music-After-Forever-After-Forever#7191330], Octavia Sperati [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.195079-Gildans-Guide-to-Good-Music-Octavia-Sperati-Grace-Submerged], and Todesbonden [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.202100-Gildans-Guide-to-Good-Music-Todesbonden-Sleep-Now-Quiet-Forest]. You'll also want to look into Stream of Passion, another Ayreon side project with a sound very much along these lines.

Here are some other Progressive Metal/Rock bands I think you might take a liking to: Myrath [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.236352-Gildans-Guide-to-Good-Music-Myrath-Desert-Call], Orphaned Land [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.188243-Gildans-Guide-to-Good-Music-Orphaned-Land-The-Never-Ending-Way-Of-ORwarriOR], Katatonia [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.209418-Gildans-Guide-to-Good-Music-Katatonia-Night-Is-The-New-Day], and Karmakanic [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.190892-Gildans-Guide-to-Good-Music-Karmakanic-Whos-The-Boss-In-The-Factory].

Things related to Gothic Metal that I can't be certain you'll like but which are worth mentioning anyways: Penumbra [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.194210-Gildans-Guide-to-Good-Music-Penumbra-Seclusion], Virgin Black [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.196425-Gildans-Guide-to-Good-Music-Virgin-Black-Requiem-Mezzo-Forte], and Beyond Twilight [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.206266-Gildans-Guide-to-Good-Music-Beyond-Twilight-Section-X].

Stuff I'm going to recommend just for the hell of it: Devin Townsend Project [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.198217-Gildans-Guide-to-Good-Music-Devin-Townsend-Project-Addicted], The 69 Eyes [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.221850-Gildans-Guide-to-Good-Music-The-69-Eyes-Back-In-Blood], and The Romanovs [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.193220-Gildans-Guide-to-Good-Music-The-Romanovs-And-The-Moon-Was-Hungry] (none of these sound alike by the way).[hr]

Whew! Hopefully this was helpful in some small way. Be sure to let me know if you actually want my ridiculously long list o' stuff, as I'm not kidding when I say I could fill entire paragraphs with just the names of bands I think you'll enjoy and I positively love recommending music to people - I'm just a bit pressed for time at the moment, heh.

Amon Amarth are indeed growled vocals; They're melodic death metal. To reiterate, I love death metal, so when I'm recommending anything that's NOT death metal (as above) it's only the finest.[sub] or ignore me, that works too[/sub]
Strangely, there is one song called "Born of Thunder" by Destroy Destroy Destroy which grew on me, probably because i loved the instrumentals so much. But i carn't think of any other songs i like which are primarily growling vocals.

Firstly, happy birthday. Now, if you like the melodic metal, you could check out any death metal bands from Europe... Cradle of Filth, Dimmu Borgir, Dark Tranquility, etc.

Ah, so that's why your name looked familiar - d'oh! Did you change avatars recently (asks a fellow who doesn't pay very much attention in the possibly vain hope that he has an excuse for not noticing you were in fact on his bloody friends list)?

Right, well, rather than dwell on my glaring oversight let's just.. oh look, here are some songs! Whee!

Portuguese female-fronted Gothic Metal band Witchbreed

[small]
Finnish female-fronted Gothic Metal band Silentium

[small]
Unsun, a Polish female-fronted Gothic Metal band with an unusual (for the genre) vocal approach

Theocracy, an intriguing Power Metal band that is overtly Christian and yet does not suck
