Originally, I played the game as it was, and still had great fun. You don't need the mods unless you absolutely want the most improved experience the first time. But you probably shouldn't, imo. Enjoy the game the developers made first, then tweak it. That's how I like to look at it.

But go searching through some of the mods listed on The Elder Scrolls Wiki page.

Deadly Reflex is an awesome addition, adds an element of skill to it rather than just 'strike, block, wait, counterattack'.

If you ever play as kahjit, pick up a night eye toggle. Complete and total pain in the ass the way it is in vanilla. Forget which I have, but here's one

Infinite torches are nice too. IIRC they go out in like 2 minutes or some stupid time
