I know that sounds very general so I'll state a few likes/dislikes of mine. Know first that I only have 2 PS3 games (Mirror's Edge and FFXIII) and, having had a PS3 for a while now, really need to get some new games for it. Ive kinda been missing the past few years of games.

- I tend to prefer RPG's/JRPG's.
- I really dislike FPS's but willing to try one (2 max). Preferably not something gritty and realistic - the only franchise Ive liked enough to play actively is Timesplitters which throws realism out the window.
- Ive never really played strategy games but wouldnt mind trying one, preferably simple enough that I can get a feel for it.
- Im a fan of platforming-type games, as well as things like Prince of Persia (Sands of Time that is, I havent played any of the more recent ones).
- I like Indie games - Another Code R (for the Wii) was excellent imo, so anything like that would be good. Also a fan of Mirror's Edge (again, it seems to stand out from most games)

So basically, what games, that have been released in the past few years for the PS3, have you liked enough that you would recommend it. If more info of the sorts of games I like/dislike is needed, I'll offer it.

1- Try Fallout 3 or New Vegas, or Oblivion. The first Dragon Age is also quite fun. For JRPG's, well, I'm not the one t ask about them.
2- I would suggest Borderlands (get the edition with all the DLC's) or the Resistance series, which has awesome weird weapons.
3- For strategy games, I have a feeling you'd like Valkyria Chronicles (if you can find it) or Risk: Factions, which is as simple as you can get, but still quite fun.
4- For platforming, I'd suggest the Uncharted or God of War series, which mix it with some damn good combat/gunplay, or one of the many awesome platformers on the Playstation Store.
5- Again, Playstation Store. Indie games out the wazzoo.

While not PS3 exclusive, Dark Souls is very fun, if you don't mind the baby-punching difficulty.

Also: Uncharted series are very fun.

- Demon's Souls and Dark Souls. Seriously, they are both amazing.
- Valkyria Chronicles. While not really my thing, I thought it was an interesting mix of JRPG and strategy.
- Ico + Shadow of the Colossus. Two of the best games ever made. Period.
- Enslaved: Odyssey to the West. It really surprised me how good it was.
- Mass Effect 2. Verrrrry solid port of a great game.
- The Uncharted series was quite good, though I thought some of the mechanics were a bit shoddy. Little replay value as well.
- The newer Prince of Persia games were okay. A bit formulaic maybe, but still solid games and good fun.
- Flower is just a very fun and pretty little game.

1. RPGs - If you like RPGs, you've probably heard of Fallout 3, Fallout: New Vegas, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and the Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, all of which are on the PlayStation 3 system (as well as PC and Xbox 360). I would recommend getting all of these; the first three can probably be purchased for the same amount as Skyrim (60$), as they're a bit less new.

2. FPS - You probably wouldn't like the main-stream first-person shooters like Call of Duty and Battlefield if you've never tried FPS before, as they're the main generalization that probably made you dislike shooters in the first place. I'd recommend BioShock (and BioShock 2), as well as Crysis (and Crysis 2), as they are both shooters that have really great gameplay, and Bioshock has a fantastic story, whereas Crysis has amazing graphics.

3. RTS - Halo: Wars? Not too sure about how many great strategy games there are for Xbox 360.

4. Platformer - I know if I had a 360 the first platformer-type game I'd buy would be Banjo Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts, but you might also enjoy LIMBO. Nintendo has the best platformers, in my opinion.

5. Indie - Again, there's LIMBO. There are plenty of great Indie games that have moved to the XBLA by now, but I won't be very helpful in this section. Also, when Minecraft comes to 360, get that.

I'll list a bit of everything, just to be safe:

Demon's Souls (RPG with balls-to-the-wall difficulty)
Shadow of The Colossus
Metal Gear Solid: 4, HD Collection
Ratchet & Clank: Future (Tools of Destruction or A Crack in Time)
Resistance 1, 3 (What, 2? That never happened...)
Uncharted (All three)
Little Big Planet (Platformer with an emphasis on creation)
Modnation Racers (A racer with the same premise as Little Big Planet)
Mass Effect 2
3D Dot Game Hero
Catherine
Sly Cooper: HD Collection
Red Dead Redemption
Brutal Legend (Hilarious metal themed RTS with Jack Black)

On The Downloadable Spectrum:
Fat Princess (Medieval Team Fortress 2)
Sam & Max Season 2

There are still many more games, but that's all I remember right now.

Mass Effect 2 (for your FPS).

Catherine
Nier (JRPG)

Dragon Age (Origins and/or 2)
Skyrim (Elder Scrolls 5)
Prince of Persia (not deep, but jumpy climby fun none the less)

Given your preferences, those are the ones I can think of.

I'll name a couple games no one has listed yet.

- Heavenly Sword. Better the God of War 3 in everything but graphics. Ninja Theory made this and Enslaved (a game a few people recommended), they don't make the best games but they make games with a heart and I loved Heavenly Sword even more than Enslaved.

- Vanquish. If you want a throw-realism-out-the-window shooter, give this game a try. It's 3rd-person and it has arguably the best campaign for a shooter this whole gen.

- Bayonetta. My favorite game this gen. This is made by Platinum (they made Vanquish as well). I really like the twist they put on the witch mythology. The game is just insanely over-the-top.

- Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath HD. It's a HD version of a Xbox only game from last gen. It's different and quirky, and I'm early it in so far. So far it's not great but it's unique and enjoyable. You shoot animals like chipmunks and spiders via a crossbow instead of arrows (bullets if it were a gun). It has a western theme to it.

For online, I would suggest Warhawk/Starhawk (playing the beta now). Both games aren't at all realistic. You don't level up to gain better guns, so you won't be going against players with better guns or perks or anything. The games have very generous aim-assist so aiming skill isn't nearly as important as most shooters, what's more important is using the right gun in the right situation and just having better strategy. These games are really just pure fun, the way most online games should be. You can get in jeeps and tanks and the hawks (jets). Dogfighting in Warhawks/Starhawks is extremely fun. Starhawk doesn't have tanks but it does have jetpacks.

The Jak and Daxter Collection is being released this month.

I highly recommend you check it out when it arrives if you haven't played the Jak and Daxter games.

Kind of a dead thread now but one last question,

For those recommending things like God of War 3, Mass Effect 2, Fall Out 3, etc... I cant help but notice the fact that they're sequels. Would I need to play the ones before them to understand whats going on?

Depends on the series.

For God of War, yes. You need to play the previous games, but luckily for you, they're not only great games, but also available for the PS3. Get the God of War Collection Vol.1, play them, then GoW3.

The first Mass Effect never came out for the PS3, but the sequel has a special intro sequence for the PS3 detailing previous events and giving you some choices regarding the story.

Every Fallout game is stand alone.

Well, good luck. The PS3 is a great platform right now, imho. You can find lots of great games, really cheap.

Borderlands (Slightly iffy about this one)
Fallout 3
Skyrim
Heavy rain
Valkyria Chronicles
Eternal Sonata
Red Dead Redemption
Batman Arkham Asylum
Left 4 Dead
Bioshock
Ratchet and Clank (Tools of Destruction I think was the first one made for the PS3?)
God of War Collection

I have most of those games. If i were to choose three, I'd say:

Fallout 3
Valkyria Chronicles
God of War Collection

With Red Dead Redemption just barely losing to those three.

Not a bad list to start with except Left 4 Dead not available on the PS3, Xbox360/PC only. If you want to add 1 or 2 more JRPGs there is also Ar tonelico Qoga: Knell of Ar Ciel and Atelier Totori: The Adventurer of Arland.
