Okay, so, in a little over a week, my exams will finally be finished. As a way of celebrating, I'm going to buy myself a PS3. A few reasons why I'm getting a PS3: The seventh generation already has a lot of interesting games out that I don't have to wait for, and to be honest, there's more exclusives that interest me on the PS3 than the Xbox 360. If I want shooters, which is pretty much the 360's entire repertoire (as far as I can see), I can get them a dime a dozen on Steam.

I've already made a little list of games that I'm interested in, but I know that that's only scratching the surface. So for the sake of having more than just a couple of games for the platform, I'd like some current PS3 owners to recommend a few of their favourites.

A few notes about my personal tastes:
-I don't play a lot of shooters, and particularly not console shooters - I just can't get used to not having M+K.
-In fact, anything I can get on PC, I'd rather get on PC.
-I like Japanese RPGs more than Western. Don't ask me why; I just couldn't get into Skyrim or Knights of the Old Republic.
-I'm cool with the idea of downloadable games, but I just find art games boring, even if they aren't completely pretentious.
-However, I live in Australia. This might make it a bit difficult to get some downloadable games. I can import boxed games, though.
-I'm already looking at getting Red Dead Redemption, Valkyria Chronicles, Persona 4 Arena and the Sly Cooper HD box, if that helps.

I would like to recommend the Uncharted series though since you say you don't particularly like shooters I suppose they wouldn't interest you much.

Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 and Ico and Shadow of the Colossus would be the two I'd recommend most even though that are both HD re-releases of PS2 games. Kingdom Hearts is kind of an action RPG but as I'm not very familiar with typical Japanese RPGs I don't really know how it compares... I just think its a cool game.

Well, I think the rental place near my house does video games. I could see if they have it. Considering that I'm getting Red Dead Redemption, though I don't think of that as being a 'shooter' per se...

Shadow of the Colussus and Ico are on PS3 and great games if you haven't played them yet.

Demon's Souls is a fun too and I actually liked it more than Dark Souls though I'm not sure if the servers are still up but still a fun game even if they're not.

I the other game I was going to say was Valkryia Chronicles but you already mentioned you were thinking of getting it.

Dragon's Crown:
It's a beat-em-up, with really nice graphics and a fairly good leveling system.

3D Dot Game Heroes:
It's like the old Zelda/RPG games, a nostalgic trip.

Warship Gunner 2:
It's just an amazing PS2 game that's available on PSN.

Tokyo Jungle:
A sort of rouge-lite, where you play as animals.

Zone Of The Enders HD Collection:
One of the best mecha games.

Civilization Revolution:
It's pretty good Civ-lite.

Dragon's Dogma - Dark Arisen:
A pretty darn good action RPG, with tons of Western/Japanese tropes.

Ni No Kuni:
Level 5 + Studio Ghibli + Pokemon
-Nuff said.

Vanquish:
It's a 3rd person action RPG by a Japanese developer.
Weird fun.

If you like JRPGs, I would suggest Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch as well as Tales of Graces f and Tales of Xillia.

Also, I would recommend that you get Puppeteer, this game is awesome and had me smiling throughout my play through of it.

Well for JRPGS, here's a good list to start.

Resonance of Fate
Valkyria Chronicles
White Knight Chronicles II
Folklore
Demon's Souls
Dark Souls
Dragon's Dogma
Final Fantasy XIII and XIII-2 if you think you can stomach them, they're not as bad as everyone says, but also nothing special either. XIII-2 is a bit better than the first. X and X-2 are also being re-released in HD in a couple months.

As for other stuff, do you like stealth? If so, there's the Metal Gear Solid HD collection and Metal Gear Solid 4.

You're gonna want to pick up Demon's Souls and Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 ReMIX (as well as 2.5 next year). I would say Dark Souls, but that's also available on PC.

Unfortunately I've missed out on a lot of the RPG action this generation, so that's all I can give you, really.
-I'm cool with the idea of downloadable games, but I just find art games boring, even if they aren't completely pretentious.
Tokyo Jungle and Tekken Revolution. The latter is F2P so that'd be a good way to guage whether you'd enjoy the bigger main games.
-I'm already looking at getting Red Dead Redemption, Valkyria Chronicles, Persona 4 Arena and the Sly Cooper HD box, if that helps.
Get the Sly Collection definitely, as well as Thieves in Time. You'll probably want to check out its cousin franchises in the Jak and Daxter Collection and Ratchet & Clank Collection. If you enjoy the latter, definitely pick up the Ratchet & Clank Future games.

A few others I'd recommend:
Metal Gear Solid Legacy Collection and Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance
God of War Saga Collection
Ico and Shadow of the Colossus Collection
Hatsune Miku PROJECT DIVA F
inFAMOUS and its sequel.
Catherine
Katamari Forever
Asura's Wrath

I'll list my favorite PS3 games that you can't get on PC:

Infamous 1 & 2 - The Infamous series were my favorite PS3 games until The Last of Us rolled around. The travel mechanics (power line grinding, hoverjet hands, ice launching) are the standard by which I judge travel in sandboxes these days.

The games makes you feel incredibly powerful and badass as well (you can't say shooting lightning from your fingertips isn't ridiculously fun).

Persona 4 Arena - If you've played Persona 3 and Persona 4 before. The game is a genuine continuation of both games. I personally really enjoyed seeing what the Persona 3 gang had been up to. There is a sequel on the way too.

Shadow of the Colossus & Ico HD - SotC is a timeless classic. The HD remake is great and if you haven't played this before, you should. I did get bored of Ico though.

Kingdom Hearts 1.5 HD Remix HD remake of a classic PS2 JRPG, a very good sequel and a movie of a DS game? Value for money there. A 2.5 remix of KH 2, BBS and Re: Coded is on the way too.

The rest are 3rd person shooters, but they are genuinely good games you can't get on PC.

Ratchet and Clank Future Trilogy - If you ever played R&C on the PS2 you will know what to expect here. A refinement of a great formula. Don't bother with QForce or All 4 One though.

Vanquish - Japanese 3rd person shooter with a crazy sliding mechanic. The game actually punishes you for staying in cover. Gears of War this is not.

The Last of Us - I know the zombie apocalypse has bean beaten to death, but this game is an absolute gem. Great characters, gameplay and story - the holy trinity.

Red Dead Redemption - Rockstar's best game. The world may seem barren at first glance but there's a lot of content in this game. The storyline is pretty good as well.

Uncharted 1,2 & 3 - 2 and 3 are especially good. The first gets a bit repetitive with it's environments and gunplay, but the sequels mix it up brilliantly (especially 3). The parkour is a lot of fun and not overly frustrating.

I can't comment on Valkyria Chronicles as I have yet to play that myself. It's sitting in my to-play pile along with Catherine. I've heard good things about those two titles though.

A lot of the best PS3 games have already been mentioned (mostly by Drummodino) but, depending on if you like fighters/ racing games, I would say Gran Turismo and any of the Tekken games are worth trying; in fact I would go so far as to say they're the best games in their respective genres. Motorstorm's not bad either, it's a good laugh for playing with friends.

If you haven't played Resident Evil 4 I'd definitely say it's worth getting the HD version from the PSN store (don't hold your breath for amazing HD though). Also Starhawk is pretty kickass, sort of like Pacific Rim as a video game and if you don't mind having a load of extra hardware cluttering up the place Guitar Hero/ Rock Band is worth a go, especially if you go the whole hog and get a bunch of friends round to play as a "band".

Oh I should also add that the common belief is that this website is going to announce Persona 5 on November 24.

http://p-ch.jp/

Note the Persona Team and Atlus logos at the bottom left. If this is true it will probably be on the PS3 (Persona 4 was released for PS2 exclusively in 2008 and Arena was on both PS3 and 360).

If you like JRPGs, then Tales of Graces F has, to my tastes, the best battle system around. It manages to make your healers and mages a blast to fight with. Tales of Xillia is pretty excellent as well.

The Last of Us, Shadow of the Colossus HD, Journey, Rayman Origins/Legends, Ni No Kuni, Red Dead Redemption, and Uncharted 2/3 are all musts. If you want to try something really out there, I personally liked Heavy Rain and Beyond: Two Souls (to a lesser extent) although I know that isn't the most popular of opinions.

Damn, I thought I was going to come in here and suggest some games that hadn't been suggested... That doesn't seem possible. Well, I'll just add my voice to the crowd and suggest that some of these are really worthwhile.

The Uncharted series
Uncharted 2 is by far one of my favorite games on the system, but I recommend them highly. Keep in mind there is gunplay and chest high walls aplenty, but also puzzles and some great cutscenes. Made by Naughty Dog is that means anything to you (and it should).

Arkham series
I haven't played Origins, but Asylum and City were great games which I enjoyed the whole way through. Really makes you feel like Batman.

Valkria Chronicles
A Strategy RPG game. The combat may take a minute to get used to, and you may want to grab a strategy guide for it, but it's a lot of fun. Just keep in mind, make your moves fast. And getting the A rank generally means being aggressive.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution
A fun game with shooting, stealth, and conversation. Those conversation moments can change a lot and make some things much easier. I recommend it.

God of War 3
If you liked God of War, God of War 3 is more of the same. Which isn't a bad thing. Kratos is still an ass hole, but the gameplay is solid, and killing a God and a Titan will make you feel like a badass.

Don't forget the Playstation Classics on PSN. There are plenty of PS1 and PS2 games you can download for a small amount of money and play to your hearts content. A lot of JRPGs, too. Like Xenogears and Breath of Fire 4.

As a fellow JRPG enthusiast, I'm gonna put a few notes by that selection for the sake of the OP.

Valkyria Chronicles is a no-brainer, the OP already said he was picking that one up. I'm also A-ok with the recommendation of Resonance of Fate. It has a weird storyline and a few difficulty spikes, but all in all the characters are entertaining, the modern steampunk atmosphere is solid and the gameplay is genuinely refreshing (though maybe not everyone's cup of tea). As for White Knight Chronicles II, here in Europe, you actually get the first one free if you by the second one. Not even download or anything, it's just on the disc. However, I personally wouldn't recommend it. I found it to be pretty slow, boring and unimaginative. It's one of those games that allows for multiplayer within the story itself and it feels like they cut a ton of potentially interesting stuff just to make the multiplayer possible. Also, gameplay wise, it feels more like playing an MMORPG than a JRPG. As for Folklore, it has some amazing art, but everything else is pretty mediocre. Also, the gameplay isn't exactly like a traditional JRPG. Yes, you can get collect "Folk", but you can't really use them in the same manner as, say, Jade Cocoon, Legend of Legaia or Pokémon. You simply link them to one of the four action buttons and you get a different attack. The combat itself is real-time.

I have yet to play Demon's Soul, Dark Souls or Dragon's Dogma, so no opinion on those. As for Final Fantasy XIII / XIII-2, my recommendation would be: don't. Just... don't.

I would just advise you to be very careful when buying JRPGs for the PS3, because it's not like the good ol' PS2 days when Final Fantasy titles were good (or acceptable at the very least), Shin Megami Tensei titles were plenty and Shadow Hearts became a cult classic. No, this is an era where stuff like Hyperdimension Neptunia and Time & Eternity actually find publishers. Then again, to be fair, I do have a very strong dislike for that Japanese art style you seem to find in every damn Ar Tonelico or Atelier "whatever" game. And sadly enough, the hollow esthetics seems to seep into the story, characters and gameplay. (The style, as I've heard, is called moue or moe - or something along those lines.)

- - -

Anyway, my personal recommendations would be:

- The LittleBigPlanet games, they're are always tons of fun.

- The HD collections of Jak & Daxter and Ratchet & Clank, if you don't already own them on PS2, that is.

- It seems you will also be getting the Sly Cooper HD set. If you end up liking that, take the new Sly: Thieves in Time in consideration.

- The new Ratchet & Clank games are a blast as well. "Tools of Destruction" and "Quest For Booty" were good. "Crack in Time" was downright great. Then there's also "All-4-one" and "Q-force", I would only recommend them if you're planning to go multiplayer, if not, skip 'em. Also, you might want to keep and eye out for "Rachet & Clank: Nexus" coming out later this month, apparently, their going back to the solo formula (and you'll get Quest For Booty for free). One final piece of advice: don't buy "Ratchet Gladiator HD" on PSN, it is one of the worst ports I've seen in a long time.

I don't really consider them games that are defined by their shooting even though there is still alot of that in there, it's more about just being pulled along on an rollicking adventure and enjoying some very high production value and set pieces.

The games are quite often described as "cinematic", whether thats a good or bad thing is up to you.

I'm going to second these games, they're so much fun.

Catherine - It's a good story heavy game about a guy who cheated on his girlfriend with challenging block puzzles. It has multiple endings based on how you play.

Disgaea - The best SRPG ever made. If you like deep gameplay or maxing characters it has that. If you want to play a few simple battles and enjoy a quirky story that will make you laugh you can do that too.

Metal Gear Rising - Crazy over the top hack'n'slash with an awesome soundtrack. You don't need to play the previous Metal Gear games to get into it.

If you haven't played Okami, get the HD version. Now.
