Recommend me some Science Fiction books!

Hey guys, i don't usually read much SF, but once in a while i just get the urge to do so. So, could you recommend me some books? Im thinking something a bit like dead space-event horizon-alien kind of thing, with huge spaceships, not many characters,planets, etc. nothing "epic" i guess. more story driven than anything else, no weird powers,or jedis, or aliens (except maybe the ones that kill you). any ideas?

Check out Infected(Infection?) by Scott Sigler. Not really epic in scale but one of the better written horror, sci-fi, alien stories I have read. Some of the imagery made me sick.

For simple space adventures, it's hard to beat anything by David Weber, David Drake, or Eric Flint. The Dahak series (beginning with Mutineer's Moon) or Drake's Redliners, or Weber's Apocalypse Troll all sound like what you're after.

If you want to try something more serious with less action, everything I've read by Vernor Vinge was excellent. Those who recommend P.K. Dick are right to do so. His later stuff is weirder and harder to enjoy, so start with something like Time Out of Joint or Ubik.

You might like Niel Asher's 'Polity' Series. Book one holds up pretty good by itself. Lots of creepy monsters & cool tech. Asher knows how to write a good space-battle.

My first taste of SF: Starship Troopers. (the book was light and entertaining.)

i'm ashamed no one has mentioned Simon R. Green (huge, sweeping space opera type saga), John Ringo (funny as hell), and Kieth Laumer (will make you think twice about dismissing AI's having souls). seriously, just find anything they've written and it's gold.
