Before I start, I have searched to check if there have been any recent recommendation threads.

I've been looking to get into some new music, and I've been searching for the past week, without any luck. So, I've decided to rely on the escapist community to recommend me music. I'm looking for something different, tasteful, thoughtful or simply moving. I put a very high importance on lyrics and I'd like to avoid the usual stuff.

I'll leave with a sample of what I usually listen to...

David Bowie, Brian Eno, Penguin Cafe Orchestra, Red Lorry Yellow Lorry, Devo, Howlin' Wolf, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Piano Magic, Dead Can Dance, Alien Sex Fiend, Blue Nile, Virgin Prunes, Gavin Friday and Cocteau Twins.

well ive only heard Bowie, so imma recommend the Flaming Lips (insane psychedelic indie), maybe the Pixies (basically stoned indie) and possibly some Modest Mouse (indie).

Oh I love his ambient stuff, though I've not listened to much ambient music in general. I got into him because of his work with Bowie, if you've not heard his work on Bowie's Low, I'd give it a listen. I enjoy electronic music alright, but more along the lines of Eno or Vangelis' work, I enjoy sombre ambient pieces in particular, though I do like to have a look around, have anything in mind?

That's true, I find most people skip the Berlin albums, though. Thanks anyway.

"Tasteful" isn't really a great descriptor for music, and the stuff you've listed are fairly different. So I am going to go out on a limb with a couple of recommendations for music I like that aren't metal or hip hop.

Jellyfish's second album, Spilt Milk, is a really great pop/rock album with some of the smartest lyrics I've ever heard. My favourite tracks on the album are probably Brighter Day [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G1MhiyIgHSc] and New Mistake [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eHvgQDRpA-s&ob=av2e]. Forewarning - the video for New Mistake is one of those pretentious weird videos that was fairly common in the 1990s.

The other recommendation I have is Chroma Key, which is former Dream Theater keyboardist Kevin Moore's solo project. It's sort of laid back music with influences from psychedelic genres and ambient electronic stuff. Kevin Moore's lyrics are odd at times, though. His lyrics go from being really emotional and personal, to sort of vague and sarcastic, and he went through a phase of recording what sounds came to his head, then trying to write lyrics that sound like that, which was odd to say the least. On the other hand, he's written stuff like On The Page [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dwIdfaetHZU] and Mouse [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FOIWFC5Q7Ao], and I love the lyrics in those songs. Also worth noting is OSI, which is a collaboration between Kevin Moore and Jim Matheos from Fates Warning. Electronic rock with some progressive metal influences. Their second album, Free, is really awesome.

Taste is subjective, I'm using a loose term to see what people suggest.

God...music tastes are so individual, but I guess it's worth a shot. You want thoughtful/moving and you put a high priority on lyrics? Try early era Ani DiFranco. Maybe start with "Living in Clip" or "Out of Range" or "Dilate" as far as albums go.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ani_DiFranco

Lyrically she's a female Bob Dylan, and she's one of the best acoustic guitarists I've ever heard. Never signed with a major label, stayed aggressively independent. I don't know if there's another musical artist I respect half as much. Her later albums got a little tepid and self indulgent, but her early to mid-nineties period is spectacular.

I do love words... That being said I'll enjoy instrumental tracks too, (Penguin Cafe Orchestra of course) but if there are lyrics, I usually aim for a certain level. Also, good choice, but I'm actually already aware of her.

Bat for Lashes then? I've an inexhaustible supply of chick singers, I can't get enough of em.

I've never really found a great amount of female driven bands, no, Cocteau Twins, 45 Grave, that's almost it. But she's not really my thing.

hmmmm... i think something by gel: is exactly what youre looking for.
the lyrics in particular are great, and its certainly "different, tasteful, thoughtful or simply moving".

...ok fine, i lied a bit... i want to help, and i know lots of great music that fits into some of those categories and is borderline that genre... almost... but i have next to no focus on lyrics, so i cant really help as such...

...but perhaps to find something new, you need to change your standards... maybe not quite so drastically, but at least a little.

Oh I'm fine without lyrics, but as I've said, if there are any lyrics, I like them to be of a certain quality, otherwise I usually find the music becomes an irritant. It's a pet peeve. Of course the lyrics can be minimalistic and still strong. I mustn't have been clear. I'm much more open than my initial post may seem.

After looking at the bands you have listed, I believe you would like post-rock.

There are many amazing post-rock bands, so I'll just list my favourites.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor
Mogwai
Sigur Rós
Explosions in the Sky
God is an Astronaut

Joanne Shaw Taylor is a young rhythm & blues (the proper original sort I mean) singer-songwriter-guitarist of some talent. I recently invested in her first album, White Sugar. Pleasent if not epic, the songs are almost all foot-tapping numbers with strong beats and a surprisngly mature vocal performance from the twentysomething Shaw. "Bones" is especially catchy.

If words are important... well, they're sung with feeling (a strength of all blues stuff of course) how much meaning you find in them is an individual thing. I'd reccommend it to you.

Some good recommendations so far. Given your existing tastes, I would be fairly confident that 'Four Tet' will float your boat.

EDIT: the guy up there ^ that's recommending Jellyfish, listen to him. Not immediately what I would have in mind given the OPs brief but that's a great suggestion.
