So, I just finished playing Max Payne 2 (a little over due), pretty damn awesome, me thinks. Particulary nice atmosphere, too.

Now, however, I have nothing to play. I know that there are gazillions of games I haven't played yet, but there's just so many of them I don't know what to do. Also my computer is the electronic equivalent of a very taste species of turtle, so things like Crysis aren't really an option.

SO, Escapists, recommend me your favourite PC game! I'd like to know what genre it is, as well. If your feeling particulary charitable, you can add why this is your favourite game.

EDIT: Perhaps I should add that apart from Left 4 Dead 2 and the more obscure titles, I have played every VALVe game there is. You can stop recommending Team Fortress now, lads. I already know it's awesome.

I should probably recommend one that I have only played on the PC so Fallout 2 or any of the Command and Conquer series up until Generals: Zero Hour.

Alright, I always liked me some good Star Wars action. I'll check it out.

I don't really want to recommend HL2 AGAIN, so instead I'll say Deus Ex.
Played and LOVED Half-Life 2 & Episodes, played Deus Ex and found it (raises flame shield) a bit underwhelming, actually. Objectively, I can see that it's good - what with its massively detailed world, loads of options, etc - but I just can't get into it.

Mafia.

A great story with the best ending to any game, great characters, great writing, great (but bastard hard) shooting, great driving, great music, great themes and morals.

Simply put: the best game I have ever played.

My favorite game changes all the time to whichever I'm having the most fun with. Right now, that's STALKER: Call of Pripyat. So good!!!

Just one game? Quite hard.
Here's a per genre list instead :)P ):
Grand Strategy: Hearts of Iron II (currently playing the awesome Kaiserreich mod)
Grand Strategy w/ Real time tactical elements: The Total War series (Medieval 2, if I had to pick one, if only for the mods available/upcoming)
RPG: Hmm. Tough. I'm really into Dragon Age: Origins now, tho'. Otherwise, I'd say Fallout 2, I guess? Baldur's Gate series? Arcanum? *shrugs*
FPS: Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (yeah. no dedicated servers means a no buy for me :D )
3PS: Mass Effect series
RTS: Company of Heroes (un-installed at the moment, tho') or Sins of a Solar Empire (also un-installed :p )
Adventure: The Longest Journey Series
Space 'Sim': Tie Fighter (yeah. Old. needs a re-make/update)
Mech game: Mechwarrior Mercenaries (2 or 4)...or Heavy Gear
MMO: EVE Online

edit: I'm sure I've forgotten stuff which, at the time, I may have considered a 'favourite' :p

If I had to pick just one game to bring along/keep, I'd say Civilization 2 (would run on most PCs, hours of fun).

Thanks, this looks like a great list. Will be sure to check some of them out. And welcome to the Escapist!

It hasn't aged well, that's for certain.

Baldur's Gate 2: Shadows of Amn. It's my favorite because its hands down the best game released.

Unless you have some magical access to the early build of it, I don't think you can recommend something that's not out.

OT: Recommending Starcraft 2 would be given in this point (And in my name), so I will say this:

Really? You need a video for this one?
