I did a similar topic like this awhile back and you guys were really helpful. I ended up purchasing Need for Speed Shift and had a great time with it. It was only like 7 bucks and would of flew under my radar otherwise. I don't have a PS4 or Xbox One yet but I plan on holding out til I get an Xbox One before I pick up Forza Horizon 2 and shall def pick up Forza 5.

So now I return for more suggestions. These stipulations aren't necessarily deal breakers, but just guidelines to get a feel for what I'm looking for. Have changed my stipulations a little bit, but here they are-

-PS3/360
-below original retail price
-real cars
-some sort of progression like unlocking stuff or gaining levels et cetera
-somewhere between arcade and sim. But, this time a bit more open to either side.

On 360/PS3 I have played:
Forza 2,3,4,Horizon
Dirt 1,2,3
NFS Shift

Burnout Paradise - cars are real but not real life manufacturers.
Burnout Revenge - cars are real but not real life manufacturers.
Driver San Franciso

the rest of the ps3/xbox driving were pretty bad iirc

Yeah I was actually considering getting Burnout Paradise which I can get on the cheap. I actually have played it many years ago, but the open world kind of screws me up. I seemed to always take wrong turns and such and would have to constantly check the map to make sure I was going the right way. A friend told me it isn't that bad once you learn the layout of the city. I should give it another shot considering I had a hell of a good time with Burnout 3 Takedown.

On PS3: I have a grand old time with Gran Turismo 6. Real cars, real brands, progression system present, much more on the sim side of things but can be played with a gamepad easily (at least I can). No idea about the price though.
Actually another one I was thinking about. Seems I might be able to get it for $30. I haven't played a Gran Turismo since GT2 on PS1. Seems it is a game you can sink massive hours into as well.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Well MK has real cars this time around :p
Wrong console though...

I'm not too into racing games, would've said Forza since my friends are really into those.

BLUR (PS3):
Best way I can describe it is a 'Mario Kart + Gran Turismo'.

Wipeout (PS3/PSN):
There's a few of these, all equally good.

There's Blur, it plays like Mario Kart but has the aesthetic of a realistic racing game. Basically a cross between realistic and arcade racing.

I would also recommend Blur. I play on the XBox 360 and it fulfills a lot of your stated criteria. The multiplayer is a bit thin given its age and the death of the company that made it, but there's still life in it.

Shift 2? Maybe. They dropped the NFS for that one.

I'm a little lost not owning a console, if you really like racing you need a PC for GTR, iRacing, Grand Prix Legends (sixteen years old and still the king), rFactor etc.

I've hear Richard Burns Rally runs on the 360 despite being an XBOX game, that is awesome.

Maybe give GRID (AKA Race Driver:GRID) a try, as well as GRID 2 and GRID:Autosport. They are made by Codies so they are bound to be good, Codemasters rarely make poor racing games. No progression in these games but great handling.

EDIT: The new NFS: Hot Pursuit is pretty fun, very arcadey though.

In no order of preference:

Burnout: Revenge (arcade)
Split Second (arcade)
NFS: Hot Pursuit (arcadey sim)
GRID series (sim)
Gran Turismo (sim)

All are excellent at their respective genres

Driver San Francisco, it has a lot of real cars, it is a lot of fun to drive and its very similar to Midtown Madness in a way since you do a lot of varied stuff.

NFS Hot Pursuit is by and far my favorite racing game. Basically its just a Burnout game since its by the same peeps that made Burnout, EA just slapped the NFS title on it for obvious reasons. What makes this game so brilliant is the 'Interceptor' mode in online multiplayer. This is basically just 1 cop vs 1 racer in a high speed chase. Since this is a near flawless arcade racer in its own right this mode delivers one of the most adrenaline pumping thrills I've experienced in a game. I got a little 'burned out'(no pun intended) by it since I played it so much so I haven't played it in a while so I have no idea how active the multiplayer still is(its a game from 2011).

NFS Rivals is also really good(now by in-house developer Ghost which apparently consists of key developers of Criterion). The racing is as phenomenal as ever but it's a bit too disorganized for my taste, so the multiplayer is a little lacking. AI opponents aren't nearly half as fun as human opponents in racing games.

Midnight Club 3, DUB Edition. My favorite racing game so far although the crew could be freakin awesome. You may also try out Midnight Club L.A. but I prefer 3 myself. 3 feels like an 'arcady' street racer sim. Plus, I really like that the story is loose and allows you to go at your own pace. SOmetimes its just fun to drive around in your customized cars looking for rockstar logos hidden around the open world maps. If you leave your car 'standing' in a place where pedestrians walk by, I like how they form a group around your car checking it out. It also has a pretty good soundtrack.

Mario Kart is awesome so don't get me wrong. I just notice mascot racers have a different feel than your traditional car racing games. Who knows how many hours I spent shaving off seconds in time trials on Mario Kart 64. I really want Mario Kart 8 but I don't have a Wii U yet. But, that reminds me I have been meaning to pick up MK7 on 3DS.

Super Mario Kart
Mario Kart 64
Mario Kart Super Circuit (very under-appreciated)
Mario Kart Double Dash
Mario Kart DS
Mario Kart Wii

I actually wasn't feeling Mario Kart Wii and Double Dash was just alright for me for some reason but I played the heck out of all the others.

Diddy Kong Racing was awesome, and I heard that Mickey N64 cart racer was pretty good but I never played it. Kind of want to try out Crash Team Racing so might download it off PSN. Most recently I did enjoy the Sega Sonic kart racers.

Yeah I heard good things about MC3. I will check it out. Seems I could get the PS2 version pretty damn cheap. MC:LA is pretty cheap too so might as well pick up both.

Yeah the only NFS game I've ever played was Shift due to suggestions on my last topic about this. I would always see mixed things about NFS games and due to the fact that there is so many to choose from I didn't have a clue where to start. I'll take note of your suggestions.

Yeah I've always been eyeballing that game. It is pretty cheap as well. I played a lot of the first Driver on PS1 and had a blast with it. Though not technically a racing game per say I'd still likely have fun with it. Thanks for the suggestion!

Due to how much I enjoyed Burnout 3 Takedown I got Burnout Revenge the day it came out. At that point I didn't have a 360 yet so I had the original xbox version then ended up selling my xbox when I got a 360. I might as well pick up the 360 version now as it is very cheap.

Split Second is one that I was highly considering. I almost put it on the original post to see what people think.

I've been watching prices for Gran Turismo 6. People have advised me against GT5 having tedious license earning and a terrible menu system. But, apparently 6 solves a lot of those issues.

Almost forgot I do actually have the first Grid. I downloaded it a few months ago when there was a sale. This is when I also got Dirt 2 which I really enjoyed and resparked my interest in racing games recently.

Yeah Blur looks pretty appealing to me I'll check it out. Though I was leaning towards standard car racing games I might as well check out Wipeout as well. I played the heck out of F Zero GX on Gamecube. That game was amazing.

Thanks all who gave suggestions. The ones that look most appealing to me now are:

Midnight Club LA
Blur
Split Second
Gran Turismo 6
Burnout Paradise

Luckily none of those are too pricey and would keep me busy for quite awhile.

personally didnt like
Midnight Club LA
Blur
Split/Second
all of NFS games that came out on 360/ps3 dont know how they managed to make them that bad especially using Criterion

_____

GRID on the other hand I did forget about it is great. Get GRID the original I've only tried AUTOSPORT but could not get into it reviewers also generally say its worse than original
Midnight Club 3 Dub edition is one of my fav arcade racing games ever but its only playable on PS2/PC with emulator
Gran Turismo 5/6 are both solid but Forzas are better especially when playing with a steering wheel.
