Hey there,
Recently became interested in the history of WWII in particular and was looking to see if there was a good game that could give a good perspective on it. I'm aware it's a popular topic for games. I understand History Channel did a couple themselves, but from the reviews, it doesn't sound like they did well.

I'm not really into FPS's as I don't think I'm a real good shot.

However I loved the RTS 'Command and Conquer: Red Alert' series.

C+C:RA is the closest thing to a 'real' war game I've ever played, and the only RTS I've ever played, so I'm looking to expand my gaming experience a bit. What d'ya got?

Most recent console I got is PS2 and my computer.

Thanks for suggestions.

*EDIT: Also wanna stay away from gore-fests - I usually like to stay under the Teen Rating.
I usually play fantasy rpgs and whatnot.

Hmm, I'd suggest checking out the more recent C&C-titles, if you liked the old ones. Be warned, though. Red Alert 3 is like an odd parody of itself, they pretty much cranked up the silliness to eleven, while they tried to make the "real" C&C timeline post-apocalyptic and serious to its tone somehow.

I'd also suggest the Company of Heroes-games, if you'd like a WWII/RTS combination. They're very nice, and it's a good point to start off from.

And finally, there's the Men of War series, which is also WWII RTS games. However, they can be very complex and hard to master at times. The detail can be very overwhelming, with each little unit having their own inventory to manage, ammunition, fuel... You can control every unit directly like a third person shooter or tanksim and everything can be destroyed. It's a difficult game to get the hang off if you're just plunging into the genre. But it's fantastic if you adjust to it. It's a very unique type of experience.

For WW2 games on the PS2 I'd definitely go with Call of Duty: Finest Hour.
Ooohh, yeah, that's a good one. It's a rather railroad-y FPS, but it knows what it wants and it does it well. Well worth a try.

The "Brothers in Arms" [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brothers_in_Arms:_Road_to_Hill_30] series is on the PS2 and pretty sweet in my ever so humble opinion. Squad tactics (using covering fire to pin your enemy and then flanking with the other squad) and pretty intelligent AI (ze Germans like to re-flank you, the crafty bastards). They also took large strides to keep it historically accurate so there is also that.

It is a FPS but it is more of a tactics game. If you have to take a shot to kill someone, you have done something wrong.

Yes! It's time for another....

Company of Heroes recommendation!

It's probably the best RTS to come out in many years; It took traditional RTS gameplay and added: a cover system, armor pentration as a stat, suppression, resource gathering and pop cap tied to territory, and squad based units. If you love WWII, you'll love this.

also, It's the highest rated strategy game on Metacritc (93%)

Hey, I loves me some silliness in my video-gaming, I loved RA 3. But maybe checking into some other C+C's is called for.

Wow, Men of War sounds a lil intimidating for a newcomer.

I hope the Mature rating doesn't imply a a real gore-fest or something, I usually stick to Teen ratings.

Thanks for the suggestions! Will look into them.

It's not especially gory. The (in-engine) cutscenes look like saving private ryan reenacted with BF2 models with the same amount of blood. the only real gore is the mild gibing of bodies from artillery. There really isn't to much blood to see, as the units are small and away from the camera and the bleeding is realistic (in the sense that it's mostly a small spurt of blood followed by some blood texture.)
