Geez this seen to be more a hate thread but anyway I only suggest avoid the anime Neon Genesis Evangelion (it's the only one I can tink of). I don't see what the big deal is as far I can make out, the main character is whinny, there some kind of undertone that I can only make out some explosion make cross shape and it's very very depressing (I don't like depressing anime).

What! You take that back! I'll admit it didn't quite accomplish what It was trying to but it's still worth a viewing.
:)

It wasn't awful, per se, but still one of the worst I've watched. I liked the art style, and atmosphere to some extent, but everything else was a bit sub-par. That's just my opinion.

Jinki Extend- too safe, nothing exciting

Bleach, Naruto, One Piece- they last forever and twelve days.
Agreed on One Piece, but Bleach and Naruto are good for just plain action.
Not seen Naruto but Bleach being good for action? Hah!

The fight scenes are ridiculous. They stand there, staring at each other then slide towards each other, one gets damaged and rinse and repeat...

So fucking stupid.

Avoid Please Twins and all the shitty fan service anime. High school of the Dead, Ikkitousen, Kanokon.
Wow. That is truely a dumb statement. "Slide towards each other, one gets damaged"

So... I guess you like fights where they stand still or "Slide away from each other".

That's the basics of fighting, two forces head towards eachother and try to injure one another.

What counts is the middle, the "dance" and Bleach is good at that.

I need to catch up on my current giant-list-o'-anime before I can branch out more, but I want to watch some series being mentioned here (like Clannad). ....My current bunch is fairly varied, but I need a good romance.
What Thaius said. Watch Clannad. Just do it.

OT: Anime I've watched that I wouldn't recommend:
Bokusatsu Tenshi Dokuro-chan (this one's very hit or miss. You and your wife might like it even though I didn't *shrug*)
Kissxsis
Nyan koi
Ladies vs. butlers
Maria holic
Kanokon
Kodomo no jikan

Gainax don't have a bad title. And Panty and Stocking was a cartoon when you look at it.It's what makes adult swim great with some crazy Japanese wackiness.
I'm a huge Gainax fan and Panty and Stocking was the first of their shows I've ever seen that I actually thought was bad. It's no worse than the average episode of Aqua Teen, but I really expect more from Gainax. Also He Is My Master, while not absolutely terrible, was at least INCREDIBLY generic.
It's a difference in taste then.I find Aqua Teen Hunger Force to be hilarious and I kept loling while watching Panty and Stocking.

He is My Master wasn't that generic was it...I mean compare it to some recent titles and you'll find it brimming with originality :D.
I wasn't saying I dislike Aqua Teen, just that I expect a lot from a Gainax show, and that made me unable to enjoy PSG. It's funny really, I get mad at other people for doing this, and here I am doing it myself. It's really because I'm very emotionally attached to Gainax because of the things they've produced. Evangelion, FLCL, Diebuster, Mahoromatic, and Kare Kano sort of got me through my adolescence. Gurren Lagann was after that period of my life, but was an excellent capstone thesis to the rest of the work they had done in mecha.

And yeah, He Is My Master is pretty generic. I'm assuming here, but you probably just haven't seen a lot of shows like this because they're not usually very high profile. Dozens of shows get produced every season that go under the radar of pretty much everyone in the western fan community. No one would have ever heard of He Is My Master if it hadn't been made by such a prestigious studio. Just look at how much more creative and well thought out Mahoromatic is.

If you want fan service, those are 2 really good shows. That's pretty much their point. As for Kodomo, I'm not sure I'd go around admitting you watched that >.>

That's a joke right? Right..? Calling K-On bad is just absurd. Even if you don't like it.

Seeing Clannad, Welcome to the NHK or Spice and Wolf here is plain absurd, even if some people doesn't like, they are both really good.

So, post your animelist or say the types you hate and then we can help you.
After reading the above, this. This.

Well, yeah, but fanservice shows aren't exactly on my list of things to recommend. Besides, they have this thing for ridiculously huge breasts that's just annoying.

And Kodomo no jikan... I'd say that's pretty vanilla, as far as lolicon goes (not that I have watched any risquer lolicon).
I have a harder time admitting I watch Kiss x sis.

I only tend to watch anime which I know I'll enjoy but there are reasons for avoiding these ones.

Hellsing (TV series)- The show kicks-ass and isn't bad on its own merit but the OVA (Hellsing Ultimate) is just sooo much better
Neon Genesis Evangelion- The show is good but the end result is VERY confusing and the main character can get very annoying at times.
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann- My personal favourite but I would avoid it if you are looking for an anime that tries to be serious, it is very silly
Elfen Lied- Once again the show is good but if you REALLY hate fanservice then this may be one for you to look past.

Also, avoid Clannad and Clannad After Story like the PLAGUE. Avoid it!

So...

Incredibly...

DEPRESSING!
Don't listen to him!

Ladies love a man that can cry, and that show could make a concrete slab shed tears.

OP
To avoid?
Erm, Rozen Maiden I guess, not that it's bad as such, just that it doesn't have an ending, it got cancelled :(

Witch Hunter Robin, maybe, it's decent enough and it has a really good twist at the back end but the whole thing is just so slow paced, you'll be lucky to make it that far.

And Aviod Now and Then, Here and There.
Now THAT show is depressing.

I can actually understand you but I've gone to the praise pretty much every title Gainax makes phase. But I really haven't disliked anything they've made. Some were mediocre but it was still good mediocrity.I mean just about every anime that comes out is mediocre as fuck nowadays.Gainax is a breath of fresh air. When you think about it there's nothing like PNS on the market.

Umineko no Naku Koro ni should be avoided in anime form, as the adaption job from the visual novels is exceedingly poor, resulting in nothing but an incomprehensible mess. Very much unlike the excellent adaption of its predecessors series.

Second season of Gunslinger Girl as well. The first is decent enough (if nothing special), but the artwork suffers drastically in the second.

Also High School of the Dead. Would've been an excellent series if the title had been "High School of sleazy camera angles with some zombie stuff going on in the background", but as it is it just borders on false advertising.

Then by all means put Clannad at the top of your list. It's funny, it's romantic, it's emotional. Arguably the best anime I've ever seen, and I'm not exactly an avid romance watcher. It's just that good.
It IS at the top of my list. My "watch this after you're not busy watching every other series you've got already" list.

The "this is the giant list of series you have but have not watched" list is comprised of 29 series [http://dl.dropbox.com/u/17074544/animetowatch.txt] at the moment. A couple still ongoing. How I shall find this time is a mystery to me. Sleepless nights and multitasking days, I suppose.
Most of those I haven't seen, some I have and they're fantastic (namely Darker than Black), but if I may recommend bumping Clannad above Rin and Angel Beats. Angel Beats flounders through, but is interesting enough to keep going and has an amazing ending (and an awesome OP song). Rin is... okay. Full of fanservice, that's for sure.

I know the feeling of being swamped; I have tons I still need to watch. I just started watching Les Miserables Shoujo Cosette, which is proving to be an interesting adaptation of one of the greatest stories ever written. Thing is, everything has more of an emotional impact for me after watching Clannad. I never cried before that anime; now I cry in freaking everything. The show broke me emotionally, and it makes emotional shows that much better. It's kind of awesome, actually.

It's generic moe crap, what's to like about it?
I think the better question is, what's not to like? The entire show is just made out of adorable. I can't think of another show that is more adorable/moe than this one. It's just a fun show.

Rosario + Vampire

It's pure fanservice through, and through, and it makes me wonder how i got through three episodes of that tripe.

It could be because the artstyle is visually pleasing at least, but it you want a anime with good story, and good characters, avoid it like the plague.

I hear from a lot of people that the Manga is ten times better.
