Hullo fellow Escapists,
Let me explain to you what this is all about...you see, I have some free time on my hands, so I thought to try playing an MMORPG (for the first time evar) but I have no clue what game to pick.
That's where you come in: I'm looking to see whether or not you know of any fun [strong]-free-[/strong] MMORPG with a lively community with which to mingle.
Maybe something world-of-warcraft-like, right?
Throw some suggestions my way, if you please.

EDIT:OK, I've got enough information for now. Thanks a bunch.

You can try Aion, thats a pretty decent game.

I would also suggest waiting a little while until Guild Wars 2 comes out, should be pretty awesome.

Theres also Warhammer, but the community for that game is dwindling, which I have no reason why.

Oh and if your a lord of the rings fan try LOTRO, it was actually pretty fun, even though at the time I didn't have a good enough computer to run it.

Those are just my suggestions :).

Edit: O wait you meant Free MMO's ooooooo boy that changes everything haha. I still recommend those to you, but for free mmos you just need to go to a search bar and type free mmos. You'll get all these mmos from Korea that are free (some of them are interesting) but they are no where near the quality of pay to play mmos. You can look at aeria games, there a company taht creates free mmos. Oh and you can check perfect world out I heard it was a decent game.

Thanks for the suggestions, though none of those games are free?
You know, I am thinking of trying out a free one that happens to be decent first, before even thinking of spending any money.
EDIT:OK, I'll check out Aeria Games. Yeah, I figured there wouldn't be much quality to free mmos, but there just might be an exception to that rule hidden somewhere on the web...

As a ex-WoW player, there is no other MMO after WoW.
Buy WoW and find a good private server to play on.
No need to pay.

There was a thread like this a while ago, maybe you find something there. [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.150935]

Edit: Try Runes of Magic. It's a decent f2p MMO and a good way to start.

I'm playing Perfect world and Dungeons and Dragons online.

Both free, both pretty fun.

The thing with these free mmo's is that they either get boring really quickly or have so much red tape concerning players who dont pay the fee's for extra content that they're not worth playing. I've tried Runescape, D&D, Puzzle Pirates and Requiem Blodymare. Now mind you between this lot Requiem Bloodymare has the best graphics and its fun to kill enemies in it but Runescape is a little funner but bad graphics. Both games have shoddy storylines - Requiem especially because it was a Korean translated game. The Requiem wiki is also incomplete, there are only 700 articles or so and I personally made 70 of them, not counting those that I modified because they were such crap.

I heard there were free mmo's out there that were fun but I gave up the search long ago. That and I just hit my first year of colledge - the first few weeks in it was such a change that I was sterile when it came to playing games. Couldnt think of playing a game let alone actually play one when colledge started. Used to be I could invest hours and hours in my games now I can barely get a couple missions on my new GTA IV file done per week.

Oh and take my advice, dont play O-Game thats hardcore, and not in a fun way. My brother played it and he lost a years worth of work when he left to take care of business for one hour and some guy came and destroyed his entire fleet. He quite after that of course.

GAH!

Runes of Magic is decent. Guild Wars is awesome, but it's got a one-time fee. Dungeons and Dragons Online is okay.

No need to pay.
1. Buy WoW for a private server?
2. Private servers are illegal. Reported.

Aion is really good, Champions Online too if you are into superpowers. Star Trek Online has just entered the closed beta phase, you might get lucky soon. Other than that, wait for The Old Republic or Diablo 3.

Buy WoW and find a good private server to hypothetically play on.

Fixed that for you. Advocating that kind of thing on the escapist is a bad idea.

MMO's and "free" don't really go so well together. While it's true that free ones do exist, to get the best experience possible you'll really need to expect to pony up a subscription fee.

I would look into picking up WoW or Aion (or possibly waiting for The Old Republic) and playing the free month to see how it goes. If it's not your thing, drop the game before they charge you. It's not like a month of play for $50 is any worse a deal than one gets from most games nowadays. :)

That said, D&D online is free and might be worth looking into. I tried and hated it, but your mileage may vary.

It's not free, but EVE online is the best MMO I have ever played, and definitely worth looking into.

If you are good enough making money in game, you can buy game time with in game money and it becomes free.

I'd say wait for Guild Wars 2. It is a one time fee, but its basically just buying a new game. Trust, most free MMOs aren't really that good quality, just on the merit that they're free, and they'll probably have a load of stuff you have to pay for anyway.

Kingdom of Loathing. It probably doesn't fit your expectations, but I reccomend it to everybody because it's free, and it's goddamn funny.

I played Runescape, 4 minutes later i was dancing a happy jig at the fond memories of games that are not Runescape, its all an unintuitive mess, the controls are crap and needlessly complicated, avoid runescape at all costs.

Oh and if your a vampire with no life who never tires and never dies you could try Maple Story, you might get to level 100 out of 200+ by the time the sun explodes if your lucky
