Well, what I'm really wondering is; what sets them apart? What's the difference between, say, Detective Comics, Batman and Batman: The Dark Knight? All I know is that they all have Batman in them as all I've read so far are stand-alone stories.

Same goes for Action Comics and Superman. They both have Superman, but what sets them apart? That is, apart from the fact that in Action Comics, he's going to wear jeans.

Well to be perfectly honest I don't really read a lot of those series, so I'm just going to take a guess here, but I would imagine it's just the theme of the comic. Detective Comics for example I assume would focus more on the detective side of Batman than say the Dark Knight would while the Dark Knight may have a bit more bloodied up fights than regular Batman.

Again, not positive, so someone else who reads those series more frequently could give a better answer. I'm just guessing.

If your interested in batman, i would suggest reading as they resect the universe. but sometimes you gotta take a jump. I read (god i suck at names) catalysm and no man's land, You'll need to find a read list though. It was a lot. I'd really suggest it for someone wanting to jump into batman. It gave me a good understanding of a wide range of chareters. enjoyable too of course
