World of Borecraft is apparently quite good if you like that sort of thing.

The only others I hear of just seem to sink unsuccessfully a lot of the time. Maybe that Champions Online?

That's my motivator right there.

Also, I have to say it's the prettiest MMO on the market, if you're into that thing.
City of heroes? you can get wings there :p

So I'm new to online gaming and my friends pointed me in the diretion of some MMORPG's, namely Shaiya and Final Fantasy. After trawling through the internet and looking at different MMORPG reviews I came to one conclusion: who better to ask than gamers?
So if you wouldn't mind, which MMORPG would you recommend and why?
WoW...don't bother with Guild Wars. It's hardly an MMO.
IT'S HARDLY AN MMO??!! WHAT THE F*** IS WRONG WITH YOU? GUILD WARS IS AS MUCH AN MMO AS ANY OTHER!
You sir are a twat Guild Wars is a great MMO and if you don't like that is your opinion and so I would recommend GUILD WARS.
Yes, it is my opinion. So don't you fucking flame me for it, twat. Quoting fail anyway, if you wanted me to get notified you should have actually quoted my post. Lucky for you I was skimming through. I've played Guild Wars, and compared to WoW it's demonstrably less of an MMO.
Em I'd like you to elaborate a bit on how it is less of an MMO and don't leave a giant hunk of flame bait and expect no reaction all i said was you were a twat and you were for being so opinionated that you had to add in that little extra bit.

Regarding your "quote fail" fair enough but what a pointless thing to bring up you haven't advanced anything in the arguement and it is just really petty.

World of warcraft, but after playing it for 3 years it does become boring and i am just waiting for the Old Republic to be released.

Only WoW (Played it for 2.5 years) and Warhammer Online (WAR, currently playing it) are the ones I've played myself. I wouldn't know anything about the Sci-Fi MMO's as that is not my great interest field : /
Age of Conan I wouldn't even consider seeing how the developers are based in my country.. Good enough reason not to look at it twice XD

I'd recommend Warhammer Online though, and should you ever find yourself starting with that, and find yourself on the Order side on the server "Karak-Norn", feel free to PM 'Fraeir' xD (If I'm in a good mood, which I generally am, I help out lower rank players :p)

Flame bait? Hardly. Maybe to those self-righteous people who can't stand it if others dare not to like the same game as they do, such as yourself. I wasn't 'being so opinionated', I merely stated it was hardly an MMO, which compared to WoW is true. In Guild Wars you can't even encounter other people in the open world unless you already find them in a settlement and group up with them. That, and it's really not that big, especially if you only have one of the several different games. You'll have to point out that 'little extra bit' because all I saw was my recommendation and the reason.

No but really, Anarchy Online. First MMO I played (appart from RO) and still one of the best Sci-fi / Cyberpunk MMO's. Also, Anarchy Online is Free to Play.

Another MMO is Dungeons and Dragons: Stormreach - Also FtP now.

The "little bit extra" would be the bit about Guild Wars which unless you are an internet ostrich you should know that there is a lot of tension between Guild Wars and WoW gamers.
So yes it was flame bait. Yes you may not meet random people outside of towns but Guild Wars requires more skill to play in learning how to use builds which is something WoW doesn't have to same extent.

Yeah FLAME BAIT... Seriously dude unless you can give me a really good explanation why you think this game is less of an MMO than any other i will NEVER agree with you.. Just becuase Guild Wars is more strategic and yes a little harder then other MMOs don't make it less of an MMO than any other.

I've surfed the world of MMORPG's, and MMO's in general, never settled with one MMO for more then at least a month before it got generic and boring, even with a guild.

First suggestion is use the bloody trials you can find, it's free for a while and you get a neat experience, if you still want more after 10-14 days, put it high on the list of possible addictions.

On the other hand if you want advise, I'd have to say:
World of Warcraft, was a sad jump from the strategy genre, but it's the best for a reason, and that reason would be that it's the first, and have gotten most time to fix all those clunky problems whiny kids dislike.

Tried Warhammer for a tad, and the thing about Warhammer is. Both teams got the same bloody classes, just with funky effect difference almost, something which might be the main strenght of their grand PvP zones, those zones were a whole'nother world of fun from the generic questing, better if you get yourself a nifty guild.

Age of Conan! The game where gankers thrive, and the society suffers. If you want a guild with a awesome castle, they have it! You only got to be some kind of mad gatherer with the mentality of a zombie, or borderline like one. Otherwise, if you can look away from the inbalanced classes, and mad paranoia free world PvP can cause it's a fun game with nice grapics.

A recent game I came across was 'The Chronicles of Spellborn', was a nice little game with awesome classes, especially the shapeshifting class was fun, but kinda useless. The combat mechanics is based so that you have to aim your attacks, which makes the PvP fights somewhat more hectic as you jump around like a bunny, click moves and aim at your opponent that if clever mimics your 'dodge tactics'

And least, but last. Champions Online, it's a cool MMORPG, still in heavy de-bugging for it's inbalance, it's understandable as you can customize your character to mad levels of choices, except a army of small annoyances which managed to get me offhooked, the starting PvP arena is small, and kinda iffy, while the questing is tends to be fun, but it's the dungeons and group activites that you should look our for. They might actually be fun.

Um I wasn't actually addressing you but, if you'd actually fucking read my previous post you'd see my explanation. I'm not arguing that it isn't an MMO, just that it's much of an MMO when compared to proper, open exploration with others ones.

EDIT: Read post below.

An internet...ostrich? Yeah, I do spend enough time here to know about GW and WoW tension, which honestly is pathetic because they're both great games in their own rights. Ok, I can see you want this to be a calm, civilised discussion. Right: I'm not saying GW isn't deserving of being called an MMO, just that when you consider the multiplayer aspects to be slightly lacking compared to WoW, or Everquest or whatever, it pales in the whole 'Massively multiplayer' aspect. But as you've rightly said, it does earn its money and then some in the strategy and tactics required. Seem fair?

Ok, to end the flamewar between WoW and gw here.

GW is NOT an MMO this has been STATED BY ARENANET (the creators) gw is a CORPG similar to an mmo but without persisent areas. (co is either competitive or co-operative).

Gw and WoW have different play styles, I have played both and gw just suited my play style more.

GW is skill (as in skill bar) based and WoW is gear based. both of those statements are general there are details and exceptions.

WoW is based off of D&D, gw from Magic: The Gathering.

GW2 will be more like a standard MMO unfortunately it is a year or so away yet. Feel free to go to wiki.guildwars.com or wowwiki.com to see more details of both of these great games for yourself. If you want to look into GW2 then go to guildwars2.com and go to the FAQ there for more details.
