Won Oblivion in a giveaway on here, and I'm wondering what are the standard mods to get for it. This is an Elder Scrolls game, so I'm sure there are no less than 5 that are considered necessary.

First off the necessities:
Oblivion Unnoficial Patch
Unnoficial Shivering Isles patch
Oblivion Mod Manager
OBSE

Always try to go for the omods.

Reccomended mods:
Companion Vilja
Tamriel NPCs Revamped ( makes all the NPCs less ugly)
Better Looking Redguards, Dremora, Wood Elves, and Dark Elves ( All by the same author.)
Unique Landscapes ( makes oblivion less of a boring place)
Supreme Magic Update ( Fixes up the magic)
Symphony of Violence ( make Weapon attacks sound better)
Deadly Reflex 5 ( Try to get the omod version. This makes the combat more interesting. Would not play the game without it.)
Mart's Monster Mod ( Get the public release version. It's a bit unstable so you might want to Test it out before you decide to use it in your game. It's fine with mine, but I heard people crash with it.
Maskar's Oblivion Overhaul ( gets rid of the static leveling, as well as makes the enemies more powerful, as well as non static loot. So you won't own everything at level 1.)
OBGE ( If your computer can handle it)
All natural ( better Weather)
Animated Chimneys and Lighting (Makes towns more lively)
Tears of the Fiend ( A Really good Quest mod)
Blood Textures for Deadly Reflex ( gets rid of that awful blood texture that comes with Deadly Reflex)
banes Guild United ( Makes Guild leaders have their own loot)

There are alot more I haven't mentioned, so go to the Oblivion Nexus and go to Top 100

Some more I remember from the top of my head
Better Imperial Gold
Lumi's Better Enchantment Effects
Enhanced magic Effects
The Synx Race
Armentarium and Artifacts
Celestial Aeon project Music Mod

Nehrim. It's a total conversion mod for Oblivion that is much better than Oblivion. In fact, I'm of the belief that this mod is the reason to get Oblivion, but that's just me. You might want to play vanilla Oblivion for a while to understand all of the gameplay elements, but as soon as you start getting bored, download this mod.

Oh man. Oblivion mods... I can't think of any off the top of my head, and mine would be bad cuz' I be a boring person.
But if I was you, I would just simply look at the top files on the Oblivion's nexus. But that's me stating what is probably in everyone's head cuz' I have nothing to say.

Oscuro got hired by Obsidian for that one, actually. You can definitely see some of his influence in New Vegas.

I agree entirely with ohnoitsabear. Get Nehrim.

Play Oblivion (vanilla or modded extra shiny) for awhile, but once you've worn yourself out on it, google Nehrim and download it. It's a total conversion of Oblivion: new world, new story and quests, new music, fully voiced in German (by more professional voice actors than Bethesda hired for Oblivion) with English subtitles.

Ignore the Overhaul suggestions; there's no point in using something that "breathes new life" into a game you've never played.

If you've got the GOTY edition, the unofficial patch is unnecessary.

I have all these running on my game, no conflicts.

Mods that add animals: (Birds insects, clear water, cats, tame dogs, small rats, docile baby mudcrabs, rabbits, foxes, bats, farm animals, & children).

There's plenty reason for using Oscuro even if you've never played the base game.

Some of the things that that mod overhauls were fucking terrible. It's breathing new life into a stillborn.

Ambidextrie is a personal favorite of mine.
http://oblivion.nexusmods.com/mods/16399
It's really buggy and unfinished but you won't find a more complete package aesthetic dual wielding mod than this. With most dual wield mods, they just add off hand versions of weapons to act as shields to some vendor or in a chest somewhere. With Ambidextrie, not only do you get options to switch any actual weapon to your off-hand (which corresponding defensive stats based on the offensive ones and any enchantments), but you can choose what grip to hold it in, and even an option to use two-handed weapons as one-handed and vice-a-versa.

My favorite part is of course the dual sheathes because they didn't just go the expected route of one weapon on each side of the belt. Some are like that of course but it depends on the weapon. Katanas for instance are both sheathed on the same side in a samurai-like manor, and if you choose to dual wield two two-handers, they're placed in an X on your back.
