preemptive search bar nazi shutdown: I used the search bar but I didn't find what I am asking about

So what exactly is special about recon armor? I'm not asking why so many people rant about it or drool over it. what I'm asking is, why did Bungie bring it back in unlockable format? Is there a backstory to it? It doesn't look epic enough to give to a limited number of people (IMO). Any ideas?

I get that it was something that not many people had so it became popular and blown out of proportion. The question is, Does anyone know if there is a reason behind that particular helmet look? Was it just something that the staff thought looked neat? If so I condemn their taste headgear . Just curious.

It was really rare with only special people getting it in Halo 3. So therefore it was valuable. It was the biggest online status symbol, but now everyone has it.

In all honesty, I don't understand what the big deal is about ANY of the customizable armor in Halo: Reach. Maybe I just didn't play it long enough (and probably won't, so let's just establish that now), but it didn't seem that any of it made much of a difference during combat.

Yes, yes, I know, it's so you look different than everyone else. But they could've accomplished the same thing with a bigger color and texture palette. And it would've been a lot more fun to see a bunch of Spartans running around with flowers and woodgrain all over.

And about recon specifically - wasn't that some kind of retail version exclusive? I heard something to that effect.

Recon was a special armour which only bungie and a handful of selected people got. However Halo 3 had new achievements added to it in 2009 some of which were called vidmasters. ODST had vidmaster achievements aswell and if you completed them you got the recon armour. Satisfied?

Pretty much exactly what Fargodog said, originally it was almost impossible to get it as you had to do something particularly amazing (like get headshot with a traffic cone).

It all started in Halo 3, where players who stood out in Bungie's eyes were the only ones who got it and thousands of people drooled at what they could not have. Then Bungie made it an unlockable item by completing all Vidoc achievements in Halo 3 and in ODST. A rather difficult task, but far from impossible. That all said, I suppose they figured "You know, instead of dealing with people yelling "CAN I HAVE RECONZ!?" they just gave it to them.

Doesn't matter that much to me.
