What kind of metal do you like?
Surely he must like the kind with loud, distorted guitars and dark lyrical themes?

OK, that was stupid, won't do again.

OT: I quite like Alter Bridge. Sort of a combo of Post-Grunge (contrary to popular belief, it's not ALL shit) and some genre of metal or other.

Been listening to Paradise Lost on the weekend, not sure if it's something you'd like, they are fairly depressing, by I love them anyway.

Check their older works too, they used more guttural vocals, if that's your thing.

Uhh... Well that's not a vague question... What with not knowing what kind of metal you're after or what bands you're currently into...

Anyhow some bands I've been listening to lately:

I'm at work so I can't give any youtube links but Arch Enemy, Austrian Death Machine, Baroness, Black label Society, Black Sabbath, Body Count, Cannibal Corpse, Dethklok, Dimmu Borgir, Goatwhore, Immortal, King Diamond, Lacuna Coil, Mastodon...I think I'll stop now.

I've been listening to a fair bit of Heaven Shall Burn lately. Nice and chunky, but also melodic at the same time:

Also you should check out Mudvayne. Don't hear much of them nowadays, but I still reckon they are solid: Failing that, there's always Lamb of God:

I'm a big power metal fan, so most of these are power metal but I sprinkeled in some others for good measure:

Van Canto (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FrtXkik0ey0) They are just fun to listen to, here is one of their best songs "To sing a metal song"

Gamma Ray (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MaSxUS-cD2U) The current band from one of european metals godfathers Kai Hansen, former founder of Helloween, they are just plain great.

Avantasia (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L-PkfKZAT6E) A coalation band with artist from multiple bands, like Alice Cooper, Micheal Kiske, Jorn Lande, Roy Khan and many more. Founded by the Edguy vocalist Tobias Sammet, If you like Avantasia check out Edguy as well.

Wintersun (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3vP8m1e9R1Y) A melodic death metal band by the guy from Ensiferum. He recorded everything but the drums on their only album this far. It's hard, it's fast, and it's fucking sweet, check it out.

Kamelot (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XvI5w0cG68o) A power metal band with one of the greatest vocalists of all time (in my opinion). Roy Khan, from Norway, is a opera trained singer with an unique voice and the pipes to back it up. He is the main reason to listen to the band in my opinion

Pagan's Mind (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xHAoHifynHM) A Norwegian prog-metal band. It might be my patriotism that's effecting me, but I think this is mabye the greatest metal band since 2000. Knut Rue, the vocalist, is trully awesome and gives his all in every song like his life depended on it. Another memorable thing about the band is the cover they did of "Hello Spaceboy" from David Bowie. Bowie himself have publicly said that he thinks their version is the best version of the song.

EDIT: the links didn't work properly, but just copy them into your search bar and they should work

If English lyrics is vital for your enjoyment, feel free to ignore this post completely.
Along with Swedish viking rock band Hel, this is pretty much all I've been listening to lately.

A bit more information would've helped a lot, OP.
Anyways... you can't go wrong with Overkill.

Also some Annihilator. Why cant Jeff Waters go back to being the singer?! Fucking Padden ruined the band for me.

Blind Guardian, Iced Earth, Tyr, Hammerfall, Seven Kingdoms, Fairyland, and/or Stratovarius. All good bands that are fairly different from each other, and while the list isn't in order of favorite, BG is my favorite of the bunch.
