Hey peeps.

I use Fraps for recording game on my PC.

However, I've tried recording some megadrive/genesis games that I wanted to do some nostalgia vids on and the frame rate dropped to single figures using Fraps, making the game unplayable and obviously the videos unwatchable.

My question is this my fellow escapists:

Can any of you recommend some recording software that might me old school game friendly? Or am I looking at hooking up my old megadrive to a DVD recorder?

Thank you very much!

I ones used wegame as an alternative to fraps . it?s not as highrez and doesn?t have nearly as many options but it seems to allot more processor friendly

Thanks I'll look into it. :)

All the download links on that site appear to be broken, doesn't fill me with much confidence!

Camtasia? I hear it works well, even for stuff fraps doesn't record.

You're using an emulator, right? Because I'm pretty sure most of those have recording functionality built in. Poke around in the settings and see if you can find it.

Edit: Actually, <link=http://www.left4deadforums.com/27629-how-can-i-record-emulators.html>this thread has some good suggestions. I particularly like the one that talks about using your emulator to save a demo file that logs your button inputs, and then playing it back while recording. That way your gameplay doesn't get screwed up if any slowdown happens.

Put the thing into full screen and click the monitor aero desktop (DWM) option on the general tab of fraps it'll allow you to screencap whatever is on your monitor.

@ Owen_Merrilin Thanks I'll look into it.

@ Corven I don't appear to have that option on my general tab. I'm using Fraps 3.5.9 and that's the most recent version I believe.

FRAPS has a habit of tanking framerates quite hard.
Try assigning it to a different processor thread, 'cos I'm pretty sure both the emulator and FRAPS default to 0.

Not sure if Dxtory will record emulators. It's generally better for framerates.

Indeed as Owyn said, a few emulators have both full recording and audio recording built straight in.
That's how I got some songs from games, sure sometimes it's not 100% accurate but meh. :L

Dxtory has the ability to keep the recording and game FPS separate which may need some extra juice on your end. I have tried this with a few emulators and it works just fine.

If you're comfortable playing in a window you could use Camstudio. It's not fast enough to do real games but it's free and it does the job if it's just a 320x240 window. You'll also need a video codec such as XVid.

Okay, I've downloaded Kega Fusion and that has a built in recording feature, works pretty damn well.

Excellent, thanks for all your help chaps and chapettes!

I've run into this same problem actually. I think the AVGN got around this with a dvd recorder for his show.

If you're willing to delve into the command-line world, you can give ffmpeg a try. It's freeware that backs a whole slew of for-pay programs.

Bandicam.

It's not free but it's a simple program like Fraps but less taxing on the computer and has the amazingly useful feature of allowing you to record a screen region rather than a specific game window. Why Fraps even lacks such an option is beyond me.
