Ah yes, the lond saught after and highly anticipated Red Dead Redemption!
Red Dead Redemption is sandbox game set in the old West. You take control of the main character, John Marston.
John Marston is a reformed outlaw who must kill or capture his former gang memebers in order to save his family. As John Marston, you can be a hero or a villian. You can choose to save the townspeople, or murder and rob them.
The game begins with a woman, Bonnie, saving your life after you've been shot. Bonnie shows you the ropes around the ranch and how to handle a horse and a rifle. The beginning time you spend with her will be the tutorial.
Soon, after you've done a few things for Bonnie, the map opens up and you're ready to explore. When you and your horse begin to wander the map, the first thing you'll probably say is "Wow, this is a very very very big map!"
The map also features a host of wildlife that you can shoot with your guns! Muahaha. Be it, bears, boars, deer, rams, cougars, rattlesnakes, hawks, vultures, owls, wild horses, coyotes and wolves, you're sure to find something to shoot out in the open. Oh, and everything you shoot, you can skin for money.
The world is large indeed, but it's also pretty well detailed and not too repetitive (meaning it doesn't look like the devs just copied and pasted areas). The game also gives you the option to say waypoints, so getting around isn't that hard.
Thankfully, the game gives you more than one way to travel. You can travel by foot, horse, coach, and you can even fast travel if you set up a camp. Traveling on foot is slow and dangerous over long areas since their are many animals who will want to take a bite or two out of you.
The most common way of travel is by horse. A horse is a safer way to travel, but that doesn't mean it's the easiest. The controls for the horse are a bit dodgy at times and may make you shout a curse word or two at your screen. There was many times when I wanted my horse to run, but instead he jumped over a fence or did something else idiotic. Of course, even dodgy controls can't stop the overall FUN of riding a horse. It seems odd, but even when my horse does the opposite of what I want it to do, I still can't help but smile when I make it rear up like Zorro against a beautiful moonlight backdrop.
The game gives you so many things to do. You have main missions, sub missions and mini quests that you can do. The main missions progress the story and the sub missions are good for gaining money, fame, and honor. The miniquests pop up randomly. The miniquests can be anything from stopping a horse thief or saving a woman from being violated. You won't lose respect if you choose to ignore the miniquests, but doing them gives you a little money and fame.
Of course, quests are not the only way to make money. The game also offers many jobs you can take. You can herd cattle, break horses and thing like that. The jobs are relatively easy, and while they don't give you much money, they are a quick way to make a buck or two.
You could also take the moral low ground and rob people. Robbing stores is pretty simple, just walk in and point a gun at the clerk, he'll hand you the money or run away. You can make a decent amount, but you can run the risk of losing honor.
The game also has a very fun and slightly addicted feature to make money... GAMBLING.
RDR offers a few different gambling games for you to play. You can play, horseshoes, blackjack, poker, dice and finger filet. I will venture to say that blackjack, poker and finger filet are the easiest to understand and grasp. Horseshoes take a bit of getting used to before you can actually score a ringer and dice was a bit difficult for me.
The most interesting feature of the poker game is the ability to cheat. Once you achieve a certan suit (the Elegant Suit) you gain the ability to cheat in poker. Cheating is pretty straight forward, but if you mess up, one of the men you're playing poker with will call you outside to duel.
As yes, dueling. The game makes dueling almost too easy. Thanks to the Dead Eye feature, an duel can be won without breaking a sweat. Duels do not cause you to lose honor points, so even if you're caught cheating, you'll keep your honor.
Thankfully, dueling brings me to my next point, the Dead Eye feature. Dead Eye is an ability John Marston has which slows time and allows you to target enemies and shoot them. While in Dead Eye, red X's will appear to show you that the person or animal you've scrolled over has been targeted. Dead Eye is very useful when you're being chased on your horse. You can access it while riding and blow away your pursuers.
Nothing, in my opinion, is better for blowing away your opponents than a good old fashioned revolver. RDR hosts a multitude of weapons. You hold lasso's, pistols, shotguns, rifles, knives, and other things.
Using the weapons is very easy thanks to the auto-aim feature. Since you have auto-aim, you won't have to worry about all the pesky zooming in business, since Marston has the eyes of an eagle and if you auto-aim, you can hit someone from a long distance away.
Also, toggling between weapons is a snap, so Red Dead gains point for its simplicity.
Red Dead offers the player many things to do in the game. If you feel like going out into the wild and breaking horses, you can certainly do that. I've already founnd myself wasting hours just dicking around, shooting wild game and playing poker.
You can be as evil as you want and go around shooting people, lassoing good people and of course, stealing. You can be good and help the innocent and punish the evil doers. Whatever path you choose to take, you'll most assuredly have a great time.
Red Dead is by far the best sandbox game of 2010 thus far. Since the map is so large and you have to much to do, you'll spend many hours on this game before beating it. And if you're an achievement/trophy hunter, you'll be spending EVEN MORE time on the game, as there is a trophy/achievement for getting 100% complete in the game.
Hope this helps ya'll!
EDIT: Oh yeah... The music on this game rocks. Once you get to a certain location (can't say where
) the music is the most epic thing I've ever heard.
