*Looks at my collection of every series on DvD*

...I've waited so long!

The official story regarding the film is that a movie was always planned and Naylor was very enthusiastic about it, but unfortunately funders pulled out, people who said they would fund ended up never getting back to him, so it just never happened.

My source for that is the series 8 special features, Doug saying that himself, by the way.

As a true Dwarfer, I think that series 7 had SOME excellent episodes - see Blue and Tikka to Ride - but the introduction of Kochanski, and, more importantly, the 'absence' of Rimmer did harm the show.

A 'proper' fan as Craigus put it, SHOULD say that series 8 is great, if not superb, for a few reasons;

-Reintroduction of 'Bunk Scenes' - Craig and Chris resolved a few personal issues and felt comfortable working together. This combined with the new.../revised old location allowed for the return of Bunk Scenes - some of the funniest content came from these scenes in the earlier few series and they returned on par in the 8th series.

-Norman Lovett - Holly returned, enough said really, even if his hair dye went wrong multiple times and left him looking like a round carrot.

-The 'old' Rimmer - We got a very 'classic' Rimmer in the eighth series, one who was back to his snidey, backstabbing, weasly self.

-The conclusion - Rimmer knees Death in the balls...that's a good way of showing how awesome Red Dwarf is. And if you hate the cliffhanger ending just watch one of the alternates and convince yourself that really happened, even though this was always a comedy first and a sci-fi second, and it doesn't really matter how satisfying the ending is if you were entertained throughout by the journey itself rather than its end.

Oh god, I just can't stop thinking about the Rimmerworld and the song. It just sticks in your brain for days... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7b35O8O_5ZM

If you're in trouble he will save the day
He's brave and he's fearless come what may
Without him the mission would go astray
He's Arnold, Arnold, Arnold Rimmer

Without him life would be much grimmer
He's handsome, trim, and no-one slimmer
He will never need a zimmer
He's Arnold, Arnold, Arnold Rimmer

More reliable than a garden trimmer
He's never been mistaken for Yul Brynner
He's not bald, and his head doesn't glimmer

Master of the wit and the repartee
His command of space directives is uncanny
How come he's such a genius? Don't ask me!
Ask Arnold, Arnold, Arnold Rimmer

He's also a fantastic swimmer
And if you play your cards right
Then he just might come round for dinner
He's Arnold, Arnold, Arnold Rimmer

No rhymes left now apart from quimmer
He'd better fade us out before we get to schlimmer
Fade out you stupid plimmer!

Extremely good, but very British humour. Some of my American friends have trouble with the accents and some of the terminology.

Things like:

Holly: I am Holly, the ship's computer, with an I.Q. of 6000 -- the same
I.Q. of 6000 P.E. teachers.

I get blank stares from them until I translate it.

Wow... How do you not get that joke? I mean, it's not a culture thing... Maybe your friends are high school gym teachers?

How many books are there? I got a two-for-one volume of Infinity Welcomes Careful Drivers and Better Than Life from a book club back in '93, and a friend of mine got me Last Human while he was out in the UK a couple of years ago. I wouldn't say the books are better, but they are definitely worth reading.
The other book is 'Backwards' which I highly recommend! It draws elements from series 3 right up to series 6 and tells a really really good story! If you love the other books you'll love this one! Incidently, although they aren't Red Dwarf, have you read Naylors other books, Colony and Incompetence?

From Timeslides

Lister: Yeees... we've got ourselves a smegging time machine
Rimmer: So we can go anywhere we want, absolutely anywhere?
Kryten: Providing we have a photograph of it.
Rimmer: So if one of us had, say a photograph of a female only naturist beach in Acapulco full of bronzed, naked, uninhibited, teenage temptresses, we could go there for a holiday?
Kryten: I suppose.
Rimmer: Kryten, get my photo album.
Lister: Hang on, the thing is we can't move outside the confinds of the photograph, what we see is all we get.
Cat: Meaning...
Lister: Meaning we can't get a picture of earth and go back there, we wouldn't be able to move outside the frame of the photograph.
Rimmer: Believe me this beach shot in Acapulco you wouldn't want to move outside the frame of the photograph.
Cat: So it useless then?
Rimmer: No, not entirely useless. Think of the famous people we could meet, the famous places we could go.
Kryten: We could go to Dallas in November, 1963, stand on the grassy knoll and shout, Duck!

Awkward silence...

Kryten: Umm, I'm sorry, it must have bypassed my good taste chip.

I only saw a few episodes on PBS or something when I was younger.. the only episode that comes to mind is where the robot guy is whisking eggs with his dong and they tell him that they are buying a new model of him... and in the advert for the new model robot, the new robot proceeds to crack a brick in half with his dong (below screen of course).

(unrelated to the book, but still...)
Not to mention the also hellaciously funny episode by the same name. The look on the Cat's face after he takes an un-crap... priceless.

Red Dwarf is awesome. Series 1 and 2 showed that you could do a Scifi comedy on a budget of about 50p. I really love those two series. But with season 3 came the Money and a bit more Scifi got thrown in.

However, in an awesome twist they managed to keep it funny whilst expanding what we knew of the Dwarfer's mad mad universe. After series 6 there was a hiatus and boy did it show when series 7 turned up. Not my favourite.

It wasn't as slick, they'd swapped the actress who had played Kochanski.. who also seemed to have stopped being Scottish.. and the whole season was trying too hard to be funny in my opinion. Plus.. they committed the cardinal sin of NOT PAYING ATTENTION TO WHAT THEY HAD ALREADY ESTABLISHED. That's right episode one of series 7, I'm looking at you.

Season 8 was a bit better, they were trying to get back to their roots but sadly it seemed to have lost that magic that the previous series had.

The books were well written and funny to boot!

I think we're due a feature length episode to finish things off, but most of the cast are all busy doing their own thing. Still, we can live in hope, eh?

From 'The Mirror' web site
And finally, great news for sci fi geeks, smegheads and perpetual students everywhere - cult comedy Red Dwarf is making a comeback. All the stars including Craig Charles, Chris Barry and Danny John Jules have agreed to film for 30-minute shows for cable channel Dave. Believe it or not, it's almost 10 years since the series was axed. We feel old now.

I always wondered, did Cat and Kryten have American accents? I know Kryten was well spoken but he had a kind of New England sound to his voice (season three onwards at least) and Cat definitely sounded like he came from some Blaxposition flick. I think the difference in American and British humour comes from target audience, with America aiming for a much larger audience with national broadcasts they tend to aim for the lowest common denominator. America does break the mould like Arrested Development but they don't last long, as they are unable to appeal to a large enough audience.
This isn't helped by the flawed Nielsen rating system that favours programs like Friends over Futurama. The only consistently good American shows are found on the payed for Cable networks that dodge the Nielsen rating system. The Nielsen rating system is a flawed and outdated model that is apparently going to be trashed soon, so all those good American shows don't keep getting cancelled and good British shows will get a better chance.

Robert Llewellyn did what he called 'a bad Canadian accent' for Kryten but I'm not sure about Cat.
