No doubt you've heard of a particular incident that occurred on the highly anticipated Hey Hey It's Saturday reunion, wherein Harry Connick Jnr., asked to judge for the "Red Faces" segment, was less than pleased with a particular skit that landed the show in a bit of hot water, worldwide as it seems. If you're not familiar, you can find the skit and subsequent apology at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wMAyGewq37w .

Anyway, long story short, apparently Australia has been branded racist by America, and I've just heard that a story about how Harry Connick is a hypocrite, having played a black priest or something, is about to be aired on the news.

I can appreciate how the skit would have offended some people, but I honestly think it was done in innocence and in the spirit of light-hearted fun, not to attack black people. Besides, Daryl duly apologised to Harry Connick, who felt the most offended on the show, and Harry appeared satisfied at that. I thought it should be left at that; there really isn't any need to blow this monster out of proportion. But what could I, the ignorant, racist Australian, possibly know about how this would be treated on the other side of the globe?

Is this just a big misunderstanding, already apologised for but blown out of proportion by the media? Or is this really bad enough to disgust and shame an entire country?

Both myself and my friend who were watching it both knew that skit wasn't the best idea.

I think what most Aussies (the ones who said it was all good on Sunrise at least) fail to realise is what the Black Face is all about. I'm no expert but I know that it could be seen as pretty offensive to some people, maybe not in Australia, but certainly in America.

Despite the skit being done "in innocence and in the spirit of light-hearted fun" that may not make it any less offensive, and just because it wasn't meant to attack anyone, it may very well come across that way.

If that makes any sense >.<

Overall I think it is a bit of a misunderstanding. The guys who didn't sure didn't mean any offence, but that doesn't mean it was any less in pretty bad taste.
