Red Faction Movie Bridges Gap Between Games

A two hour live-action film based on the Red Faction series will air on Syfy next March.

THQ clearly wants the release of the upcoming [http://www.amazon.com/Red-Faction-Armageddon-Xbox-360/dp/B003P9C6QY/ref=sr_1_2?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1279554315&sr=1-2] and Armageddon games, getting fans up to speed in time for the newest entry in the series.

The story of Red Faction: Origins takes place twenty-five years after Alec Mason freed the Martian colonies. Ten years ago, an attack by vengeful mercenaries resulted in the murder of Alec's wife and the kidnapping of his daughter, Lyra. The intervening decade has left Mason a broken man. His son, Jake Mason, has taken up the family cause and joined the Red Faction. Just in time, one might add, as a new enemy has arisen that threatens to conquer all of Mars. When Jake discovers that his missing sister is a soldier in the enemy's army, the Red Faction's struggle becomes a personal one. Ultimately, Jake must somehow reunite his family in the midst of a war.

Sure, that plot description sounds identical to half of the movies airing on the SyFy network, but there is a decent amount of experience behind the writing staff. The screenplay for Origins was developed by Andrew Kreisberg, one of the men behind Fringe and Warehouse 13, with the help of Paul DeMeo, THQ's Director of Fiction Development and writer of The Rocketeer. There is no word yet on the casting or the director.

THQ was quick to note that Origins is a "pilot movie." The implication, of course, is that we might get an actual television series if the pilot rakes in enough cash.

Red Faction: Origins will air on the SyFy network at some point in March, 2011. The next game, Armageddon launches the same month for the Xbox 360, PS3, and Windows.

I wonder, why when making films out of games, do they always pick the ones that have the least interesting plots? I mean, I love Red Faction, but really, its plot is fairly forgettable, and borrows from plenty of other things.

Same thing with others, Far Cry, Doom, Bloodrayne, Resident Evil?

Why do they always pick these, apart from money?

Why not something like Grim Fandango, Fallout, STALKER? Something with a plot that won't fall apart once the gameplay is taken out?

Sigh.

Well, I'll probably watch it anyway, but I don't expect much.
I've always wondered this as well, but it probably boils down to the game companies not selling the good game licenses to be made into movies. With the spotty (to say the least) reputation of video game movies, it's a huge risk. If Fallout were made into a BAD movie, there'd be riots. If Doom gets a bad movie...meh, it gets forgotten about because the game never pretended to be profound or deep anyway.

Although The Book of Eli reminded me a lot of Fallout, and was fun to watch because of it.

Space Marine? You're a mining engineer in the game.

On SciFi? Awww... I thought we might get an action blockbuster out of it.

That being said... This might actually be better than most of hollywood's action blockbusters.

Without knowing anything about this movie I'm going to assume Dean Cain is in it. If I'm wrong it just means he's working on some other SyFy project.

Red Faction (the first one) wasn`t a good game, the sequels were even worse since they kick anything that was remotely related to innovation. Why carry this any longer ?

Yeah, going by your words, then I can say when Fallout: New Vegas comes out: "Do we really need another Quake? I mean their both first person shooters, and you shoot things."

More than we need people finding any excuse to shoehorn in complaints about space marines when they aren't even present.

That's a bit of a stretch. Those games have very different gameplay, and it's recognizable. In Red Faction you may be an engineer-turned-soldier, but you are still a soldier in space. To me, a soldier in space is a space marine, regardless of whether he's actually hired by a government or not.

Read the above reply. ^^
This is basically semantics, people. I really don't see the cause for uproar.
