Sweet, I'll finally have a place to rent video games. Ever since Hollywood Video went down that's been sorta tough.

What? How is this news? I have been renting games from redbox since end of last year at the least.

I guess I'm a hipster.

The Redbox at the local Shop-N-Save just started renting games the last time I was there. Maybe it's because I live in a small town, but they only had a handful of games - all the Call of Duty games, the Just Dance and Dance Central games, and a few others (about a dozen in all). It's not a bad idea for when my young cousins visit and I only need a game for one night.

Also, my Redbox does run out of movies (movies that are out appeared faded on the screen), although you reserve them online beforehand.

Games take a lot longer to play than movies - and who ever has one WHOLE DAY to go through a game? I like to savor them anyway. For me, the best game experience is one I can spend a few hours in then come back to a few months later and jump right back in.

It's what I did with Mass Effect (the original), and man, I enjoyed it. The side quests are on the monotonous side, so I'm sure it helped with that too.

Anyway, renting games for cheap is great, but I don't see myself ever using this.
This.

But keep in mind that there are some games that do fit the bill for a "quickie". Duke Nukem Forever and other singleplayer FPS's like them where your not interested in the online...and games you can only play through once, like Heavy Rain/ L.A. Noire

Finally. I've been wondering what to do about game rentals since Block Buster and Hollywood video both closed since I don't rent games often enough to justify having a Gameflye account.
You pretty much summed up my situation perfectly, gamefly just charges too much for the like..two games I rent every 6 months from them. Not because theres a shortage of interest, Im just too lazy to send the damn things back more than once every 7 weeks lol. It was bleeding my wallet dry. With my rate of rental and return, the gamefly membership actually costs me more than just buying those games new.

Oh that Blockbuster granting wishes thing was true by the way. I visited a closing Blockbuster and was able to convince my dad to get my Fallout New Vegas for $30 and Bayonetta for $10! Wishes 1 2 and 3 right there. So if you see a closing Blockbuster, head down there and check out the desperation deals they have up there! On Topic,I think it's great to see that Redbox is giving game rentals,it gives the people without Gamefly something to work with.

Slightly off topic, but there is still a Blockbuster across the street from me. And the funniest part is that they have a "now hiring" sign in the window. Something tells me that is probably not truthful aside from the fact that it's been there for like 2 years. I'm surprised the place is still there, but it does have rather high traffic still.

I don't know how I feel about $2 a day. I mean that's a nice deal for maybe one day or two but after that I think Family Video has better deals.

Speaking of Family Video they seem to be doing just fine. I haven't seen anything about them doing bad financially.

My mother was a manager at hollywood video and I can easily say that it wasn't redbox that made the company so bad, it was extremely, extremely poor business practices on a corporate level.

Anyways, Kinda sucked...

ohh and don't use redbox. It's actually a lot easier to steal credit card info from one of those machines than it is from someone's computer.

Wait wait wait . . . huh? They write the disk right there? Doesn't that usually take a bit of time? I only have to wait a few seconds normally.

summer vacation when friends don't wanna do anything then I guess sitting down and trying to beat a game is all there is to do in a day
O.T. sweet I know where a red box is and where a blockbuster is (even where one of their express machine is) do I get more than three wishes now?

The impressively clever bit is that instead of stocking each kiosk with thousands of films and games, the machine writes your selection to disc(s) on the spot.
The way this is worded it sounds like its basically legitimized piracy. Im thinking thats not what was intended or how it actually operates. But if that is in fact the way redbox operates then we must promptly gather the torches and pitchforks and dispose of this heinous abomination.

A few months back I was informed of the second of three Block Busters within 15 miles of me closing down so I decided to take a trip. It had already been stripped down to those shitty movies you couldn't pay a homeless man to watch, one copy of Hitman: Blood Money, assorted candies and sodas and some random shit.

Since when has redbox got the permission to burn DVDs on the spot and how do you expect them to do so for XBOX/PS3 games and Blu-rays? Also the packaging of the disks afterwards would be a nightmare and likely to jam... so with no source and nothing I can find... are we making stuff up here?

I don't understand how this works... how are you renting it? Is it based on some kind of honor code or does it only accept credit cards and not cash? Does the movie/game stop working after the allotted amount of time?
