Like anime? Like racing? Like movies about racing? Like over-the top action with larger-than-life characters and an utterly bonkers premise? If you answered "Yes" to any of those questions, you must, I repeat, must, see Redline [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1483797/?ref_=nv_sr_4].
I'd heard of this movie a couple of years back, and finally watched it yesterday. And H-O-L-Y shit, my mind was utterly blown. I can only think of two other movies I've seen that can compete with this film in utter craziness. It's so ludicrously over the top from the very first frames I'm having a hard time describing it with words.
Just to give a quick summary of this film, I'm going to quote Wikipedia:
The biggest draw for me was the animation, which I'd heard a lot of praise for, but I could never have been prepared for the sensory overload Redline assaults you with. All I can to say is you have to see it to believe it, with the biggest possible screen and the volume turned way up. It might very well be the best animation in anything I've ever seen, leaving even Pixar and Studio Ghibli weeping in the dust.
Not that the film's lacking in other departments, quite the contrary. The visual design is absolutely stunning, showing off more bizarre alien creatures than all of Mass Effect and Star Wars combined, the music gets you super pumped, the dub is simply amazing (way better than the original japanese track and also more fitting) and the characters are all bursting with personality. Did I mention the insanity? I don't want to spoil it, but for comparison's sake I'll say there's stuff towards the end of Redline that makes the third act of Akira look calm and collected in comparison. The one downside might be the minimal plot that leaves a lot of stuff unexplained and fuzzy, but you'll forget about it as soon as the racing starts again.
Whew, now that I've vented that out, have you seen Redline? What did you think of it? What other movies are there that compare to the assault on the senses Redline delivers?

What that description leaves out is that the race in question takes place in a sci-fi universe on a planet called Roboworld (yes, really) that makes Warhammer 40k look like Teletubbies, with vehicles that make the trucks from Mad Max look like something your grandma might drive on.Redline is a 2009 science fiction auto racing anime film produced by Madhouse and released in Japan on October 9, 2010. The directorial debut feature of Takeshi Koike, it features the voices of Takuya Kimura, Yū Aoi and Tadanobu Asano, and an original story by Katsuhito Ishii, who also co-writes and sound directs. The film is set in the distant future, where a man known as JP takes on great risks for the chance of winning the titular underground race.
