For some reason I started thinking about reincarnation, to be more precise would you really be you if you reincarnated? You wouldn't have your genes, personality, upbringing, family, friends etc

So would it really be you and if it was you what would the point be? You wouldn't remember anything about your previous lives and you (as in yourself, your identity, your previous lives) would have no direct impact on your current life.

I guess what I'm saying is that, at least to me, it's logical that even if someone would reincarnate he wouldn't really reincarnate since the person/animal/whatever(rock?) wouldn't really be him even it was him.

This reminds me of cloning, you would only be you to people who know you, yet people say you could be immortal even if the real you is dead.
And teleportation. The only realistic way to teleport that we know of is to destroy the original and create a new one in the place you want to teleport to.

Yea, this kind of thinking gives me a headache, I cant imagine it ever working.

I don't think you can be reincarnated as a non-living object :p

Your right we probably wouldnt notice if we reincarnated. But I think people believe that your current way of life decides what youll reincarnate as, so I understand if people life as good as possible to make sure they dont reincarnate as a guinea pig or something.

Hehe, yeah, agreed. I think that the idea of reincarnation probably stems from the human inability to imagine death and nothingness.

That's pretty heavy philosophy there... I'd say yes as you were once you (as it were). I suppose the next question would be whether, assuming the reincarnated you is reincarnated again, would the third reincarnation be another reincarnation of your first self or an new one of your second?

Ow, my head...

And what about the current you? Are your action now then guided by the personality of the former you and if so is there no free will?

(This is assuming reincarnation is real even if not everyone believes in it bla bla bla)

After thousands of years of thought on the subject, we still can't meaningfully say that "souls" even exist. Meanwhile, every moment of your life is proof that yours is an embodied mind. Every one of the experiences that form your personality were mediated through your physical senses.

Exactly what I was getting at since your identity is defined by your experiences a reincarnated you would not have live through the same experiences you have and thus has a different identity.

Being a good ol' fashioned pessimist I don't believe in it but I was working on the assumption that it did exist...

Anyway, err... I have no idea. Would that work along the same principles as Karma in so much as if you led as good life previously would you be more likely to be a better person the next time round?
