Throughout the years, there have been characters with such terrible personalities that you just want to go in the game itself and shoot them. But that's not what this thread is about. It's about what character you most connected with, on an emotional level. Empathized with them. A character that you really liked.
For me, it would have to be Roxas from the Kingdom Hearts series. God, his life was screwed over so many times.
So how about you guys?

I have to go with Allister from DA: Origins, the reluctant hero I really felt him throughout the entire game.

Niko Bellic was surprisingly relatable. He was well thought out and the way he acted throughout the story missions fitted his character well. I admit that when it came to me being given free reign over the sandbox side of things he acted a little, shall we say, out of character.

But that doesn't break the immersion because, in a way, when you're just running around killing things it is you and not him. And, of course, his little voice clips when running people down were entertaining and kept the flow.

I agree; I thought Alistair was very nicely written and acted. I guess some people thought his jokey demeanor was a bit over the top, but I think we've all known that guy who deflects everything with humor. Plus, I think the bond between him and the protagonist was nicely reminiscent of that great bond between two male best friends.

I have to say Squall from FFVIII. Even though at first he had the emotion of a dead salamander, I'unno. Maybe just because it was the first non-kiddy game I got into so I'd never empathized before then, so that one sticks out.
I can't be the only one who cheered for him inside my head (while feeling slightly creeped out by the excessive romance) at the bit where he & Rinoa cleared out the Ragnarok. Or cried "nooo!" in their head when Edea murderified him at the end of Disc 1. Spoiler warning.
The kiddy game thing was when I was a kid by the way. Don't flame me for playing kiddy games as a kid.

This isnt a videogame, but i most connected with Ash from the movie, not the book, Fantastic Mr. Fox(which is my favorite movie, you should all go watch it). He's a teen who isnt exactly the most athletic person and who feels overshadowed by others.(Seriously, you should all go out and buy the movie, then watch it many, many times)

Great call to be honest, never has a character felt so independent and yet so relatable.

Thane Krios (ME2). I felt sorry for the guy. Damn you Bioware, and your well-crafted characters!

And probably John Marsten (RDR). Aside from occasionally accidentally shooting the wrong person whilst using the second level of dead-eye... But he comes across well as the reluctant hero, and seems strongly principled for an ex-outlaw. (Note: I haven't finished the game, so no spoilers if you're replying to me please!)

Oh, and Gordon Freeman. Going through all of that without saying a word? Exactly what I'd do. No exclamations of pain, no complaining when the combine start shooting the public, and definitely no vicious swearing when another gunship turns up or when the combine stole my buggy. Bastards.

Alex Mercer, I mean me and him basically have the same story going on.

Or a little more seriously maybe Atton Rand?

Ishmael Ashur from Fallout 3: The Pitt was a character that made a lasting impression on me. He seems like a guy who wants to do the right thing, but has to use methods he hates in order to try to achieve a greater good. It's a difficult position to be in that I have faced on a few occassions in the past, which is probably why I could relate to this character so well. I really did appreciate that they made this character be the "Lord of the Pitt" since it helped turn a seemingly simplistic industrial lord to be quite an interesting character for me.

Rei Ayanami is on my list as well for being, in a few aspects, eerily similar to my own personality and outlook on life. That is the major reason why the character is featured as my forum Avatar. But, i'm not too interested in digging into this further.

Like I just said on another thread, it was the first game I ever really got into. So yes, I was the same as you. Although I made it look cool as I wore a leather jacket and had a scar on my head.

Most relatable character? Clearly I relate to R-110. I'm badass, only want to be loved and taunt my enemies before killing them.

Also, my fire proof is eight.

Oz Vessalius/Bezarius

From a not as well known manga Pandora Hearts, I relate to the character because he has the trait of accepting everything and changing nothing, even when monsters are out to kill him. He doesn't stop to go "OMG monsters!" or ask why, just accepts they are out to get him and tries to survive. Also no matter what situation he's in he always grins and bears it as to not worry his friends, and will do anything for them (but the fact he won't tell them about his troubles still worries them, but he doesn't realize that til later on). To be honest he's a pretty messed up character always hiding behind a smile.

Jack Ryan. There are days at work where I'm practically screaming "but I'm just an analyst"! From video games, probably Sam Fisher...never quite fully on board with the plan.

Other than ruling an empire, controlling the lives of those around him, and being altogether a god at combat, Richard Rahl from the Sword of Truth book series has a quite relatable personality. Well, for me, at least.

I really can't think of any from games, but what got me through my summer reading of Pride and Prejudice was the fact I could completely relate to Elizabeth Bennett. The only sane member of her family with two crazy sisters, a neurotic mother, and a distant father, both of us take up similar roles in society and the family. We're both pleasant to be around at a gathering, but not the life of a party and will be quick-witted and opinionated when we feel like it.

However, I am still waiting for my Mr. Darcy to come along.
