How do they work?

No seriously I can't figure it out for the life of me

And for discussion value : How do you like the way relationships are handled in skyrim

You have to buy an amulet apparently, and then you can talk to the person in question in a romantic manner.

Can't comment more since I haven't tried it yet.
Ah I figure I'll have to give said amulet to my companion?

You first need to go to Riften and get the amulet of Mara from the priest inside the inn. Wear that and when you speak with people who like you you will get extra conversation options.

That's how it's supposed to work, but I've been wearing the amulet non-stop and I have yet to see any conversation options that look even remotely romantic.

But... I had an amulet of mara but that just gave me extra mana? xD

Since this post I have actually managed to get into a "romance".

Don't bother people...

Seriously.

This is how my "romance" played out.

PC: You like me don't you
NPC: Oh my god I totally do like you. Do you like me?
PC: Yeah, we should totally get married.
NPC: Definately! Lets go to the chapel right now!
Priest: Hey you want to get married? Sure.
*wait 24 hours*
Priest: Hey presto you are totally married!
NPC: Yay, I love you
PC: I love you

Seriously. I went from meeting the NPC to being married in less than 24 hours and, admittedly I may have paraphrased the conversation options, it's not hugely off what actually happened.

The "romance" in Oblivion feels like something a marketer said "Hey, everyone was talking about the romance in Mass Effect and Dragon Age. We should totally get in on a piece of that pie" And the programmers just shrugged their shoulders an tossed in a handful of extra lines of dialogue to a few NPCs.

I am dissapoint Bethesda.

Shouldn't be too hard then. Go to Siften, get the amulet of Mara from the priest (the Amulet of Mara makes Restoration spells cost 10% less mana, or at least the one he gave to me did). Wear that while speaking to Lydia and there should be an option to "romance" her.

Personally I won't be touching the romance options in Skyrim again.

This sounds very similar to the system in Fable 3.

In other words: I. SO. F*CKING. CALLED. IT.

Sucks though that it's really on that level.

No, see its worse than the system in Fable. At least in Fable you had to work to make you're spouse like you (presents and such). I basically bought a partner. I hired them to be a bodyguard and then proposed to them and apparently after the three seconds of being my bodyguard they knew I was the love of their life.

There is no sense of satisfaction to getting married. Despite having an accomplishment/trophy tied to it, it doesn't give you any real sense of accomplishment. All you find yourself saying is "I'm married... so what?"

Oh, but it does give tangible gameplay benefits. You can go to your home and your partner can cook you a meal. Yeah, that's enough to endear to them. Remember kids, food is love!

Wow, that bad eh?

That's just... funny. I'm sorry. But I'm laughing right now.

And I thought Bethesda's treatment of moral choices in Fallout 3 was pathetic. Nice to know they didn't raise the bar to high for themselves in the relationship area. I'd hate to see them trip. :p

lol, I have no time for marriage. I've got monsters to slay and loot to loot.

I just manipulate the bodies of dead female bandits for more carnal needs.

The only partner I need is my trusty ghost companion
Lucien Lachance.
Me and him are bros to the end.

That reminded me of the journal of a necromancer I found... He was apparently upset when some time he was spending with his favorite servant was interrupted. And all his servants are undead so...
You found my journal? Neat! Leave it with the barkeep at the Drunken Huntsman in Whiterun. I'll leave a few gold for you.

Even without playing the game, just from having experienced the "personality" of the NPC's in Morrowind/Oblivion, I knew any/all relationship material was going to be as bad as it could possibly be. They shouldn't have even bothered if they weren't going to put forth a legitimate effort.

Oh well. If I want my game character to have a wife, I'll go play Harvest Moon.

I Used to have a housecarl. She died during a battle with witches, A Noble death she fell to the ground picked herself up despite grave injures and threw herself at the witch saving me from a blow that would have killed me and allowing me to kill it. She died from that strike.

You treasure that housecarl.
