*shrugs* well, i guess they cannot be helped.
Don't worry, they'll get theirs. The money that they waste on those 3D TV's and their fancy gadgets is money I'll be spending on rubbing alcohol and internet porn. We'll see which one is happiest in a few months time!

... wait, it's still going to be them isn't it?

They will probably feel happy too - but there'll be something which they'll miss. Satisfaction is part of that :p

OT: I do not consider "3D immersion" bad in general - but when a stupid wii remote used backwards as headtracker, can instantly create a bigger difference than what currently is marketed under the 3d hype, then i'm wondering if the industry is interested in actual improvement and efficiency, or just in selling short term "mini-futures" over and over.

Here's an example of a bad reboot:

X-Com.

A friggin RTS turned into an FPS? With little to nothing to do with the original game?
WTF!
"They could have called it Custom Pie Fighter: Christopher Walken and it would have been equally as relevant..."

Mmmmmmmm...Ever play Sea Dogs? Or how about Pirates of the Carribean/Sea Dogs 2?

Whichever developer shows Sid Meir what a REAL pirate game looks like will be very successful.

Remakes of games like FF7 seem like a waste of time to me. They could put the resources from that into a completely new game, which might even be better. I do, however, support the PS2 era HD remakes theyre doing for PS3 now. Those dont cost as much, and look better.

This is a difficult topic, simply because video games are a constantly changing medium. The obvious example is graphics what looked cutting edge three years ago is now ancient, which is often the main reason why many gamers ask 'why not remake a game with cutting edge graphics?'

But it's not as simple as adding better graphics, take for instance Goldeneye 007 which is currently being remade for the Wii. Recently I've been playing a fair bit of N64 (my flat mate kindly brought his old one) and Goldeneye was an obvious stop off point. Now Goldeneye was earth shattering for it's time an amazing game that laid the foundations for every FPS we play and love today, but compared with a modern shooter it's not that great. It feels quite sluggish, aiming is near impossible, and the AI is attrocious. None of this is the games fault of course it was limited by technology and only feels slow compared to the generally faster modern FPS.

But this is what causes the problems we as fans of these older games want a faithful recreation of the original, something that will never stand up to our hazy memories of happier times through rose tinted glasses. And in the attempt to make a better game if the developers change any detail we will ***** and moan about how they've ruined the formula and destroyed our childhoods.

Like I said a very difficult topic, maybe some games worthy of a remake could work though as long as we accept that we are the Gaming Industry and not the Movie Industry we can't just stick a gloss of paint on our favourite games and expect them to be as brilliant as before. One of our strengths as an industry is that we are constantly changing and evolving, not just in graphics but in gameplay, narrative and new technology. Yes a remake could work but perhaps we have to accept that changes may need to be made to the formula that made the original so good in the first place.

Personally I would LOVE for Diablo 2 to be remade for the DS. I think that would work great, so long as its still diablo 2 not 2.5

As long its just a graphical and compatibility (eg. dos or 32bit) update i would be fine with it. Maybe make it a $10 "patch" for the original game.

I'd love to see a 3d remake of FFV and VI like they did with III and IV, I loved the originals and the remakes. In some cases like FF3 a remake is the best way to get new fans to play old games in the series and should be done more regularly with none rpg games

I agree, why can't we have more remakes? And I don't mean reboots or remakes (sanity forbid) every year. I mean remaking a really old game, like Deus Ex or Shadowrun. I didn't play neither and it wasn't the problem of finding the game. It's just that the moment I look at graphics of original Deus Ex I feel like plucking out my own eyes! So why can't we have the same story, same general gameplay mechanics but upgrades in graphics and some fixes to the controls (for all you consolers out there)

I would assume that companies wouldn't do it because of copyright or cost-efficiency, but honestly, how many people right now would jump over their had to get (again) original Deus Ex but with HR graphics?

The Resident Evil remake is the only awesome one I can think of off the top of my head
This man speaks the truth. It is a fantastic game and is the number 1 example I point to when people hate on remakes.

the only videogame remake I stick my hand up and say was worth it/better than the original is Resident Evil on the gamecube. If you have to ask why its because there was some actual horror in the game and enough changes to amke it feel new without killing the original.

Overall though I find remakes rahter pointless especially when they're released again at full price, hell no I won't spend £40 on a game I've already won.

Much like films, remakes are often a sign of stagnation when what is really needed are new ideas (also before anyone gets smart talking about Sergio Leone or Star Wars I mean NEW movie remakes that just blatantly copy paste the original film)

If I want to play and Old game like say Final Fantasy 7, I play the original, sure it looks like arse now but thats just something we have to deal with though FF7 for me was never defined by its graphical experience but it's story, if we did a remake now we'd end up with a very different feel for the game that would clash with my old nostalgic views of growing up with it (and Cloud would probably be full emo like he was in Advent Children)

No, no, no, no, no, no, no! No - just... just no.

This is the same pandora's box that the film and music industries opened up years ago. It leads down some very dark roads.

You end up giving a free pass to video game developers; "This version of Wet might have sucked, but we're doing another remake, we'll get it right this time I swear!"

Stifling the creativity of the independant types "This costume themed RPG sounds interesting Mr. Schafer, but first - make a gritty reboot of Psychonauts . Yes, I know you made one last year - but there are 12 - 16 year old boys that were too young to ride the last wave."

Or just plain old pulling the crap that the music industry has been doing for years "Guys! We're doing Baldur's Gate again! In 3D this time! Plus all the voices have been auto-tuned! This is truly the greatest day in gaming history!"

Because that's what they'll do. I know, I'd like to see a fully rendered FF7 as much as anybody. But at what cost, escapists? AT WHAT COST!!!?
This .

No i don't want remade games . Old games i can find on my own if need arises . Plus the thing about new gamers playing old gems of the past is bull . Everyone knows new gamers can't look past graphics ( because even if they make it with better graphics i don't think that they could make say FF 1 in full HD without it costing an arm and a leg, so they would just improve it some like the psp version of FF1 ) , so developpers will remake old games , that new gamers wont buy, and old gamers that already own the game won't buy leavig for only the small percentafe of people who have played it but no longer owns it.
