WARNING: RANT AHEAD

Escapists around Ottawa may have already heard about this, but I feel it is important to let other people know.
A Peace Coalition group has stirred up controversy with their campaign to start supplanting the traditional Red Poppy with the White Poppy for Remembrance Day.

The group claims that the Red Poppy is bad because it glorifies past violence and makes nostalgic towards war. Their white poppy supposedly promotes peace and caring, without glorifying war.

FUCK YOU MOTHERFUCKERS. The Legion Branches in Ottawa are furious over this. This group of assholes wants to supplant the tradition symbol for decades with a politically correct poppy advocating peace. I am deeply insulted at their claim that the red poppy glorifies violence.

The red poppy is a symbol used to honor the fallen soldiers from every war. It is meant as a gesture of respect towards those who gave their lives for our freedom. Yes, it does remind us of war, but that is the point. Had not these brave soldiers given their lives to defend us, we'd all be speaking German. (No offense to any German Escapists)

So this group would basically have us ignore the past sacrifices of our men and women so that they can have a politically correct version of history where everyone got along and there was never anything bad.

Also, the donations towards Red Poppies goes straight to veteran's funds, to keep the Legion Branches open, and provide for veterans. I doubt that the White poppy's members would do the same.

What do you escapists think of this idiocy?

Yeah I fail to see how people selling red poppies glorifies violence. It's quite stupid really - changing the colour of the poppies you sell from red to white won't change anything, apart from destroying a nice tradition.

I think it's stupid, but it isn't going to happen, so no sense making too big a deal out of it.

My daughter froze her butt off all day selling these things, so I am a little invested. I would be seriously irked if they changed it for such a silly reason.

And on the same topic, here is another issue impacting vetrans right now:

I just hope we don't start to forget.

<------

That should sum up my argument.

White poppies can do one. I'll wear my red one, and I'll wear it with pride God dammit!

EDIT: White poppies do exist in nature, contrary to my earlier statement. It's still a horrible fidea though.

Someone's trying to make history more politically correct?
Don't people have jobs or families or even hobbies these days?
Who does these kinds of things?
You honor your history and work towards a better future. I thought that was simple to understand.

Yay more morons who claim to be doing things to make the world a better place but waste their time doing stuff like this. The Red poppy does advocate peace by making people think about WWI and the millions of people who died for absolutely no good reason in that conflict. Fuck they play WWI footage around Remembrance day every year and I can usually find a tear in my eye at the absolute waste of life that conflict was.

I thought we used Red Poppies because they were the first thing that came back to life on some battlefields?

Also, how does red solely remind us of violence? Isn't it also meant to be the colour of love? (How soppy...)

Don't think we need to add this to the Political Correctness list to be honest.

What the hell? Okay first of all the Red Poppy is a symbol of the blood freely given by others to preserve our freedom. I don't want to see that changed. And second of all, this is really insensitive of them. They could have raised this issue at another time of the year (I would still have disagreed) but they had to choose...

ARRRGGH!

[sub][sub]This makes Redlin angry. There is a deep reason behind why the red Poppy was chosen to symbolize remembrance. Cut out the colour (and the association of blood) and you make the war seem less powerful in a way... This is stupid.[/sub][/sub]

Strange, I thought the French already used the white poppy, what with it being the same colour as a flag of surrender... *ba dum dim tisch* (joking)

If you thought hard enough, you could probably think of a reason the white poppy glorifies violence too. Its just a bunch of PC attention seeking twats who are try to "fix" problems that aren't there, instead of putting all that troublesome time into tackling real issues

But it is happening, and they are selling these white pieces of crap. I've heard a number of veterans are telling people to not buy them because of how disrespectful it is to those who died.

If you are offended at that, you wont like what they've been up to in Scotland...

(I stress this is only certain celtic football fans known as the green brigade, not the entirety of Scotland)

They didn't even spell "bloodstained" correct, but what do you expect?

What is a poppy?
In Flanders Fields
By: Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD (1872-1918)
Canadian Army

In Flanders Fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

(yes, I know you likely already know, but I wanted to share the poem anyway)

Correction: That's the opinion of the green brigade, not all Celtic fans.

OP: Why are some people so idiotic?

They're saying that a flower used as a symbol of respect for those who died in wars, so they want to make it more politically correct.

Fuck me.

Yeah, sorry, I know it's happening. What I meant was it isn't going to catch on. It's incredibly stupid and nonsensical, and most Canadians will realize that.

Edited. Still a poor representation. Should have been kicked out of the stands
