I've never really had that problem. So long as it makes for smooth gameplay I'll accept a lot of "unrealistic" conventions without having my immersion destroyed.

I think that well-designed simulationism is good design. You definitely see game designers (or would-be game designers) who think that games are only well-designed if they have very specific design goals, but that doesn't reflect the diversity of game types that people actually like to play. There are design goals that can legitimately be criticized, but simulationism is not one of them.

You were expecting quality game design from Ubisoft? And I do agree that some games can make a lack of hand-holding a satisfying experience, like with the early Resident Evil games, but they still need to follow the rule of fun. You don't want something to seem cumbersome rather than "realistic".
They did make Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory. That's pretty fucking impressive.

As idiotic as the publishers are, the Ubisoft devs are frankly quite excellent. The Prince of Persia series, the Assassin's Creed series, the Rainbow Six series, and the Splinter Cell series are all among their achievements.

Your opinion doesn't make that little logo at the bottom go away. Also, Conviction was pretty solid. Not as good as Chaos Theory, but still pretty good.

Also, Ass Creed 1 was pretty ambitious given the rest of the market. Nah, you just hatin'.

No. Ubisoft is garbage. All they can make is garbage.
They make make over twice as much money on their garbage games than they do on their AAAs. That I do give them some business props, they know how to market and sell those games.

Above: cheap shot that actually isn't accurate. Super Smash Bros is a lot of fun. Please don't eat me, Nintendo fans.

Why is it just the wii? Because you know they just put shovelware onto it? As opposed to wanting to acknowledge that they do occasionally shat out a gem that is actually worth discussing like Rainbow Six: Vegas, the odd numbered Splinter Cells, Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, Beyond Good and Evil, some of the Ass Creeds or Driver: San Francisco? And did you know that a lot of the shovelware is actually just published by Ubisoft, not actually developed?

That they allow that garbage is bad enough for their reputation. A good company makes good games and scraps the low-quality ones. Like Capcom and Nintendo. Ubisoft does not deserve the praise I give those 2. Ubisoft only deserves scorn and hatred until they can prove to us that they have stopped caring about the money, stopped ripping people off, and are devoting themselves to quality gaming on every system they make games for.

................ Fat chance.
Did you REALLY just say that Capcom is a good company, or insinuate that Capcom is somehow better than Ubisoft?

Now I'm no fan of Ubisoft and their draconian DRM policies, but I refuse to allow anyone to not only say that Capcom is better than any game developer, but that Capcom is actually good. The very idea of someone stating that Capcom is a good game developer makes me wish dueling was still an acceptable way of airing grievances.

Capcom is one of the worst game developers currently in business.

You've got some good points here OP. It made me think of why I find Dark Souls to be so immersive. My character is certainly a pivotal part in the world, but the brutal and imposing nature of the world makes me feel as if the world couldn't care less if I was there or not, regardless of the importance of my role, and planned to just continue on with or without me. I also like the way the ruinous scenery makes the world feel like a place that existed long before I ever put the game in, and will continue to plod along after I'm gone.

Many of these qualities are also reflected in Skyrim. When I'm not engaging in the main "save the world" storyline (which is most of the time), I feel like piece of dust caught in the storm that is the world. I may be important to the specific group of characters that I'm interacting with for the specific quest or quest line, but I always know that there's so much more of the game world to explore, with so much else potentially going on.

Games like Dark Souls and Skyrim generally do a good job of making me feel influential, yet somehow insignificant at the same time

I like trying to think of canon reasons for hand-holding measures.

A friend and I came up with what we call "The Looter's Guild," which lays out guidelines for treasure discernment and monster placement. Related is the "Assassin's Architectural Union," which ensures that all buildings have at least one climbable route up them.

I guess that would make you right...

Capcom, funnily enough, seems to be the only Publisher who doesn't get games or gamers. Ubisoft, EA and Activision (3 companies I detest) are successful because people like their games, Capcom seems adamant to shake off their current customer base, but don't seem to be drawing any more customers.

I'll give capcom one thing... they aren't afraid to fuck around with their IP. That's commendable in this era of identical sequels. Unfortunately they go about it like a spastic in a china shop and never learn from their mistakes.

Co-op in Resi Evil (a primarily single player fan base)? Great Idea! But let's make sure to completely lobotomise the AI so that it's near impossible to play the game solo on the higher difficulties without a competent co-op partner.

Resi Evil 6: So the general consensus is we ballsed up the Co-Op feature of Resi5, how do we go about sorting this out? Well, we will make it so the player jumps between 2 seperate co-op teams... 2x times the same thing means twice as good right?

Devil May Cry: Who likes the white headed ass hat anyway? He needs an emo combover and a homoerotic demeanour. That's exactly what this guy needs.

Street Fighter and MvC: Balance? What is this balance you speak of? Patches? But our game doesn't crash... why would we patch it?

What's sad is I keep hoping the next iteration of my favourite games will absolve capcoms past stupidity. But it feels like Sega and Sonic all over again.

I have never been interested in the Assassin's Creed series. I bought AC2 on steam last week for 5 bucks because hey its cheap. Its a fun game and I love playing it, but it is very gamey like you stated. I'm not even an assassin, its Mass Murderer's Creed. I can slaughter half the town guard and when everyone gathers around me I just throw money at them and walk away like a boss. Fun? Yes. Gamey? Immersion breaking. There is no immersion in that series for me at all.

I don't mind if a game is gamey, but I want some diversity. Why does every FPS need persistant stat tracking and unlocks? Its so STUPID! Unreal Tournament 2004 stands the test of time without any of that garbage and its just so much fun to play. I don't like people who are bad at games demanding they get achievements for picking their nose because don't feel progression and accomplishment for trying hard at something. Imagine if Super Meat Boy had a jump assist to sell more copies to a wider audience *shudder*.

Well I was far more bothered by the gameplay problems in AC, but yes they seem to roll around the uncanny valley quite often.

It's not about a game being too smooth it's about consistency, if you try to sell us mechanic X then you need to present a reason that makes sense in the game world and much more importantly you can't go breaking your own rules.
The big problem with AC is they try to present the game world as real world, which makes us compare everything to reality where incidentally gamey stuff stands out like a sore thumb, and suspense of disbelief is walking a very thin thread.

There is the X-Box 360, PS3, PSP, Nintendo DS, and the Nintendo 3DS. But those have nothing to do with the topic at hand.
Well then it's unfair to base your opinions of game quality based solely on the Wii isn't it?
