Yeah most of my friends joined in the summer 6 months ago and they seem to be doing okey even if they didn't want to go there at first.
I am from Finland and it isn't that bad. I mean free food, housing and training isn't too shabby

And yeah, can't say I'd expect the housing and food are gonna be great, but the training should be pretty sweet. (not saying it won't be a b***h at the time, but you'll come out of it with some nice skills)

It's mandatory.
Every male in Finland must do at least 6 months of military service between the ages of 18 and 29. If you don't you either go between 1-2 years to jail or then you can work somewhere without salary for 365 days, it's called civil service if you translate it word by word.
And yes, my friends didn't want to go there but since its better than prison ^^
The housing is pretty bad and since you go on camps which in winter means living for 5 days in a tent in minus 20 degrees it can be a ***** but the food tastes good it just doesn't have enough nourishing stuff in it but you can have some own stuff like candy or protein with you.
And you get 4.50 every day ^^.
