Hi guys.
A while back I was watching a film by Robert Zemekes (I think thats how you spell it) called Beowulf. I thought it was a great film and all that but one thing really struck me. How realistic the characters looked. I know that cgi animation has been getting better and better over the years but I honestly think that we have finally managed to create fully realistic cg humans.
This led to another thought. It is possible, with some computer wizardry, to mimic the sound of a human voice. I know we are all familiar with the microsoft sams and how unrealistic and computer-ish they sound but this is just the early stuff. Soon enough the software will be made to recreate people's voices or even make new voices.
This all points me to one conclusion, one day cgi humans will replace real actors and actresses in film and television.
I know you will all call me a technophobe for saying that and that I sound like all those "run! the machines will replace us all!" types but think about this.
When a hollywood studio makes a film, A-list actors like Bradd Pitt, Angelina Jolie or Johnny Depp are incredibly expensive to pay for to include them in their films. With the recession still looming over us some studio's can't even afford anything but B or C-list actors.
Cgi human may one day provide a cheap alternative to having real people, with real wage demands and real schedule conflicts in films.
Maybe I'm just a doomsayer here but mark my words, when they figure out how to perfectly mimic human voices on computers, we may well reach an age where a CGI Patric Stewart has beaten his real-life counterpart in winning a "Best Actor" at the Oscars
